Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Napoleon's Mother N o apology can be needed on the part of either author or translator for bringing before the public a sketch of the life of Letitia Bonaparte, whose chequered career is so deeply interesting, and yet so little known. It commends itself to the study of women of all nations and of every cast of thought, while an insight into the character of the mother of a remarkable man, whatever our personal, political, or patriotic feeling may be, ought at the least to awaken our curiosity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Queen Hortense, Mother of Napoleon III Hortense was the daughter of the Viscount de Beauharnois, who, contrary to the wish of his friends, married a young Creole lady, Mademoiselle Tascher de la Pagerie. The union, although one of love, did not prove a happy one, for both were young and in experienced, passionate and jealous, and wanted the strength of character and energy necessary to turn the turbulent waves of their disposition into the channel of quiet matrimony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon, when about ten years of age, was sent to the military school of Brienne, his parents having destined him for the profession of arms - a profession at that time, in conse quence of a prejudice still too prevalent, viewed as peculiarly the pursuit of a noble and gene rous mind. Forty years afterwards he spoke of his parting from his mother, upon the occasion referred to, ' as having been particularly bitter and painful to his feelings. Brienne school, although of a military character, was somewhat inconsistently placed under the superintend ence of a few monks, and regulated, in many respects, upon monastic principles. Each pupil was locked up at night in a solitary cell, the whole furniture of which consisted of a bed, an iron water-pitcher, and a basin. Napoleon became much attached to this school. I was happy at Brienne, was an expression which frequently dropped from his lips, when seated on the throne of empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Napoleon I Placed in 177 7 at the military school of Brienne, Where he had Pichegru for a tutor and Bourrienne for a comrade, he applied him self assiduously to the study of history, geography, and mathematics. He was totally absorbed in the latter science and his taste for politics was even then very remarkable. De Bourrienne has furnished a lively account of his school days. He describes him as having a remarkably dark Italian complexion, quick, penetrating eyes, and a head dispro portioned to his diminutive body. He was also distinguished by his Corsican dialect, which was a source of ridicule to his companions. He soon, however, mastered the French language; but in classical and elegant literature he never acquired great proficiency. Plutarch, Tacitus, Polybius, and Arrian were his favourite authors. He was as fond of seclusion at Brienne as he had been in Corsica, and seldom associated with his fellow-students in their hours of recreation. But although he had few friends, he does not appear to have had any enemies in the school. His chief amusements consisted in the culti vation of a small plot of ground, of which one was assigned to each pupil, and in reading historical works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon, Vol. 1 The life OF napoleon buonaparte, my father's last, largest, and, upon the whole, greatest work, has been for some years out of print, but it is only recently that I have been able to trace the ownership of the copyright. This knowledge obtained, and the work having been placed at my entire disposal by the kind ness of the gentleman who held the property, it is with great gratification that I now issue a new edition of this important history, at a price which will place it within the means of thousands to whom its former cost rendered the purchase altogether impracticable. The great object of my ambition, the diffusion of my father's fame, is thus eminently promoted. My revi sion of the text has been, of course, limited to such corrections as occurred to me of names, dates, and figures, and even in these respects I have had very little to do. My father's thorough devotion to his. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This deli Cate and yet haughty queen, when she descended from the throne, when she had ceased to be a queen, when she at length sought shelter in the tomb, weary of life and exhausted, still remained among us as the queen of flowers. Flowers have preserved the memory of Josephine's daughter, and they did not turn from her, as SO many of her friends did, when She was no longer the daughter of the omnipotent Emperor, but of the exile. She still lived among the flowers, and Gavarny, the great poet of flowers, has erected a most touching monument to the queen in, his fleurs anime'es. On a hill of Hor tensias reposes the picture of Queen Hortense, and in the distance, like a departing mirage, the domes and towers of Paris may be seen. Soli tude prevails around, but in the air soars the Imperial Eagle. The Imperial mantle with the golden bees spreads out behind it like a comet's tail, the dark red ribbon and cross of the Legion of Honour are round its neck, and in its beak it bears a richly-covered Spray of Crown Imperial. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 of 4 The peculiar advantages of position, in regard to his present subject, so long enjoyed by M. De Bourrienne, from his official situation, his literary accomplishments and moral qualifications, have already obtained for these Memoirs the first rank of authenticity in contemporary history. In France, where they had for years been expected with anxiety, and where, since the Revolution, no work, connected with that period, or its con sequent events, has created so great a sensation, the volumes of Bourrienne have, from the first, been accepted as the only trustworthy exhibition of the private life and political principles of Napoleon.
