Simple, and therein is one of the greatest difficulties - qt is its simplicity that makes it so difficult. If we could present a problem more intricate and more daring, we could expect to set the people '0 its solution. Look over the great problems that have attract the people of influence, the people of initiative power. The pec_ who control the creative forces and the distribution of wealth. This simple problem of stirring up the indifferent tanner to activity does not as yet _appeal to the people as it deserves. Here are two areas of land, ten million acres each in extent. The one is occupied by farmers, good, bad and indifferent. The other area is unoccupied, it is as nature made tt, _hat it is five hundred miles away. Two questions arise - shall we develop the agriculture of the occupied area. Double its production, double its population, and again double its production: or shall we set to work to build a railroad to that unoccupied land, there to repeat the experience of the former section - farmers. Good, bad and indifferent? You know, what would he done. Millions would be available for the more daring proposition and thousands only for the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold's classic work A Sand County Almanac is widely regarded as one of the most influential conservation books of all time. In it, Leopold sets forth an eloquent plea for the development of a "land ethic" -- a belief that humans have a duty to interact with the soils, waters, plants, and animals that collectively comprise "the land" in ways that ensure their well-being and survival. For the Health of the Land, a new collection of rare and previously unpublished essays by Leopold, builds on that vision of ethical land use and develops the concept of "land health" and the practical measures landowners can take to sustain it. The writings are vintage Leopold -- clear, sensible, and provocative, sometimes humorous, often lyrical, and always inspiring. Joining them together are a wisdom and a passion that transcend the time and place of the author's life. The book offers a series of forty short pieces, arranged in seasonal "almanac" form, along with longer essays, arranged chronologically, which show the development of Leopold's approach to managing private lands for conservation ends. The final essay is a never before published work, left in pencil draft at his death, which proposes the concept of land health as an organizing principle for conservation. Also featured is an introduction by noted Leopold scholars J. Baird Callicott and Eric T. Freyfogle that provides a brief biography of Leopold and places the essays in the context of his life and work, and an afterword by conservation biologist Stanley A. Temple that comments on Leopold's ideas from the perspective of modern wildlife management. The book's conservation message and practical ideas are as relevant today as they were when first written over fifty years ago. For the Health of the Land represents a stunning new addition to the literary legacy of Aldo Leopold.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Utilization and the Farm Problem It is widely recognized that American farmers in general are not receiving adequate returns. The well-being of farmers, of course, can not be measured by money incomes alone. In fact so many things enter into living on the farm that no adequate yardstick of rural prosperity has yet been devised. The signs are 'unmistakable, however, that all is not well with American agriculture. The income of agriculture as a whole, to be sure, moved upward somewhat between 1921 and 1929, and individual farmers scattered throughout the industry have bettered their position a little year by year. On the other hand, shrunken land values, large debts and mounting taxes, high costs, and low prices of farm products weigh heavily upon the industry, and thousands of capable farmers are unable to support the rising level of living that other groups of Americans enjoy. The agricultural problem is the outgrowth of many conditions. War inflation followed by drastic deflation of agricultural values, the accumulation of debts at inflated prices that now must be paid off at deflated prices, high farming and living costs as contrasted with low prices of farm products, burdensome taxes, increased cost of distributing farm products, shifting or decreasing demand for agricultural products - these are some of the influences that account in varying degree for the difficulties experienced by farmers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surplus: The Riddle of American Agriculture On any public issue, the economist's viewpoint is, of course, only one of many. On the issue of the food surplus, his viewpoint is urgently sought. Even among agricultural economists, however, views on the problem differ, and these several views are almost useless unless the layman knows them. The layman needs supporting reasons for the views he seeks to consider. Our role is to interpret. We have tried to arrange the interpretation to help the reader focus more sharply on the many facets of the food surplus problem. You may not be an economist, but you may have your own ideas on how the farm program should be handled. We seek to help you spell out these ideas and to look at other ideas held no less firmly by other people. American farmers have worked themselves out of their markets. They have taken advantage of new technologiesand buoyant food prices. The result is more wheat, corn, cotton and other farm goods than they can sell and give away. The balance of grain and. Cotton, in particular, is bought and stored by the Federal Government. Helped by tax revenue, the Government has been guaranteeing prices of cotton, wheat and other so-called basic commodities. You might say: Fine. The farmer has to contend with the weather. And he typically lacks monopoly powers over prices. Why shouldn't he be able to expect fair prices for his products? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The County Agent and the Farm Bureau The present system of American agricultural education in its various forms is the result, broadly speaking, of the application of science to practice. For a long period, the field of this scientific agriculture was almost wholly that of production. Special students of agriculture were endeavoring to discover the laws of plant and animal growth and the interrelations of soil, climate, and plant. More recently, efforts are being made to work out in the same fashion the laws of economic and social development. Thus, the field of scientific agriculture has broadened to include all the interests of farmers and their communities. A remarkable development of this broadened field of agriculture has been the recent extension of agricultural education. Teachers in the agricultural colleges at first gave their efforts largely to the teaching of resident students. Then gradually the "professors" began to go out to talk to the farmers. After a while came the Farmers' Institutes, where working farmers and agricultural specialists joined forces in a program of instruction and discussion. The Act of Congress, known as the Smith-Lever Act, passed in 1914 opened on a national basis a wonderful chapter in agricultural extension service, and the County Agent became the clearing house of information and suggestion between the working farmer and the educational institutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Labourer: The History of a Modern Problem "An' I mean as the King 'ull put a stop to 't, for them say it as knows it, as there's to be a Rinform." So said Dagley, a tiller of the soil in the early half of the last century. He knew that all was not well with himself and his fellows, but was as incapable of laying his finger on the cause of their wretchedness and discontent as he was of prescribing the remedy. But "there's them i' Middlemarch knows what the Rinform is," he added. This was hopeful indeed, for a remedy for the labourer's case had been a crying need for a hundred years. But Dagley had drunk his pot of beer, and was unduly optimistic. Far from there being a reform, the evils from which he and his kind suffered were allowed to drag on down to our own day.
