Book excerpt: Envy is a deadly poison. Faith is the antidote. Things couldn’t be better for Rue Kessler. He just married the mother of his eight-year-old son, Montana, and finally has the family he’s always dreamed of. Not only that, his father-in-law hired him to be the new construction supervisor on a big condo project. He’s been sober for eighteen months. He’s finally plugged in at church. And he’s building his wife Ivy the house she’s always dreamed of. Life is good. Then with no warning, Rue and his wife and son become the target of someone’s cruel and frightening attacks. What reason would anyone have to dash their hopes and dreams? What will it take to stop it? What defense is there against an enemy he can’t see? While Rue’s head is still reeling, a man on his work crew is found half dead in Tanner Canyon. Are the attacks related? Is someone trying to put a stop to the condo project? Or is something more sinister afoot–something that will take all the faith he’s got to confront?

The task of an anthropology of religious practice is therefore precisely to see how people navigate and make sense of that complexity, and what the significance of religious beliefs and practices in a given setting can be. Rather than putting everyday practice and normative doctrine on different analytical planes, the authors argue that the articulation of religious doctrine is also an everyday practice and must be understood as such.

Book excerpt: "Altogether superb: an accessible, fluent account that advances scholarship while building a worthy memorial to the victims of two and a half centuries past." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In 1755, New England troops embarked on a "great and noble scheme" to expel 18,000 French-speaking Acadians ("the neutral French") from Nova Scotia, killing thousands, separating innumerable families, and driving many into forests where they waged a desperate guerrilla resistance. The right of neutrality; to live in peace from the imperial wars waged between France and England; had been one of the founding values of Acadia; its settlers traded and intermarried freely with native Mikmaq Indians and English Protestants alike. But the Acadians' refusal to swear unconditional allegiance to the British Crown in the mid-eighteenth century gave New Englanders, who had long coveted Nova Scotia's fertile farmland, pretense enough to launch a campaign of ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. John Mack Faragher draws on original research to weave 150 years of history into a gripping narrative of both the civilization of Acadia and the British plot to destroy it.

Book excerpt: There is something much more fundamental to our social interactions today than just simple hello's and goodbye's. What if I said that levels of mental illness, obesity, mistrust, inequality, and rates of imprisonment in the human populous have a significant effect on our relationships with not only each other but our dogs as well! If you look at Epidemiology, which literally means "the study of what is upon the people," we have no choice but to include our dogs. It is a highly significant, symbiotic relationship we share. Though there are many social differences in this age we still thrive in social compacts. As I explore this wonderous world dealing with dogs I can't help but stop and question why we seem to be so impatient. Impatient about the weather, inflation, food, dogs, and ourselves. Evolution occurs so slowly yet too fast for us humans to understand it. The answer to this paradox is to simply, "slow down our thinking." When I spend time working with dogs, whether my own dogs or clients, it's all about equality of the senses. It's about "truthful importance." This applies to everything, positive or negative, everyday, every moment.

Enjoyable, riotously mischievous and gleefully direct, without losing nuance or lapsing into caricature' Daily Mail Meet Relebogile Naledi Mpho Moruakgomo. Or, for short, Eddie: an aspiring playwright who dreams of making it big in London's theatre world. But after repeated rejections from white talent agents, Eddie suspects her non-white sounding name might be the problem. Enter Hugo Lawrence Smith: good looking, well-connected, charismatic and . . . very white. Stifled by his law degree and looking for a way out of the corporate world, he finds a kindred spirit in Eddie after a chance encounter at a cafe. Together they devise a plan which will see Eddie's play on stage and Hugo's name in lights and expose the theatre world for its racism and hollow clout-chasing. But as their plan spins wildly out of control, Eddie and Hugo find themselves wondering if their reputations, and their friendship, can survive.

Book excerpt: "An intimate, revealing portrait of Frank Sinatra-from the man closest to the famous singer during the last decade of his life. More than a hundred books have been written about legendary crooner and actor Frank Sinatra. Every detail of his life seems to captivate: his career, his romantic relationships, his personality, his businesses, his style. But a hard-to-pin-down quality has always clung to him-a certain elusiveness that emerges again and again in retrospective depictions. Until now. From Sinatra's closest confidant and an eventual member of his management team, Tony Oppedisano, comes an extraordinarily intimate look at the singing idol. Deep into the night, for more than two thousand nights, Frank and Tony would converse-about music, family, friends, great loves, achievements and successes, failures and disappointments, the lives they'd led, the lives they wished they'd led. In these full-disclosure conversations, Sinatra spoke of his close yet complex relationship with his father, his conflicts with record companies, his carousing in Vegas, his love affairs with some of the most beautiful women of his era, his triumphs on some of the world's biggest stages, his complicated relationships with his talented children, and, most important, his dedication to his craft. Toward the end, no one was closer to the singer than Oppedisano, who kept his own rooms at the Sinatra residences for many years, often brokered difficult conversations between family members, and held the superstar entertainer's hand when he drew his last breath. Featuring never-before-seen photos and offering startlingly fresh anecdotes and new revelations that center on some of the most famous people of the past fifty years-including Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Sam Giancana, Madonna, and Bono-Sinatra and Me pulls back the curtain to reveal a man whom history has, in many ways, gotten wrong"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the profound dynamics between a Christian son and his skeptical father in this powerful book, as it delves into the big questions of Christianity with a compelling blend of intelligent answers and heartfelt faith. Greg Boyd and his father, Ed, were on opposite sides of a great divide. Greg was a newfound Christian, while his father was a longtime agnostic. So Greg offered his father an invitation: Ed could write with any questions on Christianity, and his son would offer a response. Letters from a Skeptic contains this special correspondence. The letters tackle some of today's toughest challenges facing Christianity, including: Do all non-Christians go to hell? How can we believe a man rose from the dead? Why is the world so full of suffering? How do we know the Bible was divinely inspired? Does God know the future? Each response offers insights into these difficult questions, while delivering intelligent answers that connect with both the heart and mind. Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or just unsure, these letters can provide a practical, common-sense guide to the Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther (1483–1546) famously began the Reformation, a movement that shook Europe with religious schism and social upheaval. While his Ninety-Five Theses and other theological works have received centuries of scrutiny and recognition, his political writings have traditionally been dismissed as inconsistent or incoherent. God and Government focuses on Luther’s interpretations of theology and the Bible, the historical context of the Reformation, and a wide range of writings that have been misread or misappropriated. Re-contextualizing and clarifying Luther’s political ideas, Jarrett Carty contends that the political writings are best understood through Luther’s “two kingdoms” teaching, in which human beings are at once subjects of a spiritual inner kingdom, and another temporal outer kingdom. Focusing on Luther’s interpretations of theology and the Bible, the historical context of the Reformation, and a wide range of writings that have been misread or ignored, Carty traces how Luther applied political theories to the most difficult challenges of the Reformation, such as the Peasants’ War of 1525 and the Protestant resistance against the Holy Roman Empire, as well as social changes and educational reforms. The book further compares Luther’s political thought to that of Protestant and Catholic political reformers of the sixteenth century. Intersecting scholarship from political theory, religious studies, history, and theology, God and Government offers a comprehensive look at Martin Luther’s political thought across his career and writings.

Book excerpt: After coming out of the third longest bout of writer's block in history, Bill Friday had finally begun work on a new, fantastic novel that would propel him back to the top as one of the Galaxy's most popular writers. He quickly loses control, however, when a test pilot and an actress appear out of nowhere and threaten to ruin, not only the entire plot, but possibly his career as a writer as well. We find ourselves in the comfy confines of outer space, nestled in a quaint solar system on the west side of the galaxy. It's Autumn. There is a newly constructed blue-green planet that is situated in what is considered to be the sweet spot of this particular solar system where Bill Friday's newest and greatest novel is going to unfold. Inspired by his pet Sea Monkeys, Bill decides to abandon the written word and instead create organic characters that would play out the novel for him in real time. They would evolve over millions of years into highly intelligent, gossipy creatures who would have a natural flair for creating drama out of miniscule details. Bill's diehard fans are excited beyond even their own comprehension. The financial backing from one of the largest entertainment conglomerates in the universe is firmly in place. Film and TV rights have been secured. Bill is ready to write, possibly, one of the greatest stories ever told. And this is when a male human being named Buddy Chattanooga appears out of nowhere. Hired by an egotistical, anxiety-ridden movie director to find a popular actress who accidentally got herself thrust out of her own universe, Buddy Chattanooga unknowingly finds himself in the beginning stages of the Earth's evolution. Unsure of where he is and how he will get back home, Buddy relies on his survival skills to stay alive and to track down the missing actress. And, as if he didn't have enough to worry about, Buddy discovers that the actress is possibly the worst, most unlikable person that ever existed. Intrigue, deception and even major indigestion ensues when Buddy endures famine, severe temper tantrums, a hyperactive cocker spaniel and even witnesses the birth of the dinosaurs. What Buddy soon discovers, however, is that the universe he came from and the one he's in now are two completely separate places and the presence of the two humans on the barren planet would have dramatic/comedic/historic consequences for the Earth and Bill's novel for millions of years to come.
