Book excerpt: She has one last chance to prove she chose the right course for her life. In 1908, young Dorothy Tuckerman chafes under the bland, beige traditions of her socialite circles. Only the aristocracy’s annual summer trips to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia spark her imagination. In this naturally beautiful place, an unexpected romance with an Italian racecar driver gives Dorothy a taste of the passion and adventure she wants. But her family intervenes, sentencing Dorothy to the life she hopes to escape. Thirty-eight years later, as World War II draws to a close, Dorothy has done everything a woman in the early twentieth century should not: she has divorced her husband—scandalous—and established America’s first interior design firm—shocking. Now, Dorothy returns to The Greenbrier with the assignment to restore it to something even greater than its original glory. With her beloved company’s future hanging in the balance and brimming with daring, unconventional ideas, Dorothy has one more chance to give her dreams wings or succumb to her what society tells her is her inescapable fate. Download or read book The Grand Design written by Donald Stoker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the abundance of books on the Civil War, not one has focused exclusively on what was in fact the determining factor in the outcome of the conflict: differences in Union and Southern strategy. In The Grand Design, Donald Stoker provides for the first time a comprehensive and often surprising account of strategy as it evolved between Fort Sumter and Appomattox. Reminding us that strategy is different from tactics (battlefield deployments) and operations (campaigns conducted in pursuit of a strategy), Stoker examines how Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis identified their political goals and worked with their generals to craft the military means to achieve them--or how they often failed to do so. Stoker shows that Davis, despite a West Point education and experience as Secretary of War, ultimately failed as a strategist by losing control of the political side of the war. Lincoln, in contrast, evolved a clear strategic vision, but he failed for years to make his generals implement it. And while Robert E. Lee was unerring in his ability to determine the Union's strategic heart--its center of gravity--he proved mistaken in his assessment of how to destroy it. Historians have often argued that the North's advantages in population and industry ensured certain victory. In The Grand Design, Stoker reasserts the centrality of the overarching plan on each side, arguing convincingly that it was strategy that determined the result of America's great national conflict.

Book Synopsis Grand Design by : Elizabeth A. H. Cleland
Download or read book Grand Design written by Elizabeth A. H. Cleland and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502 – 1550) was renowned throughout Renaissance Europe as a draftsman, painter, and publisher of architectural treatises. The magnificent tapestries he designed were acquired by the wealthiest clients of the day, up to and including rulers such as Emperor Charles V, King Francis I of France, King Henry VIII of England, and Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici of Tuscany. At the same time, Coecke was remarkable not only for the complexity and unparalleled quality of his tapestries, but also for his fluency in various media: this lavishly illustrated volume examines the full range of his work, from tapestry and stained-glass window designs to panel paintings, prints, drawings, and architectural treatises. Though only forty-eight when he died, Coecke was one of the greatest Netherlandish artists of the sixteenth century. His paintings and drawings, initially wrought in the style of the Antwerp Mannerists, evolved through his enthusiastic response to Italian Renaissance design, and influenced generations of artists in his wake. This comprehensive study explores Coecke’s stylistic development, as well as his substantial contribution to the body of great Renaissance art in Flanders. Featuring twenty monumental tapestries, along with many of their cartoons and preparatory sketches, plus seven paintings, additional drawings, and printed matter—many of them newly photographed for this volume—Grand Design provides a thorough reappraisal of Coecke’s work, amply justifying the high regard in which Coecke’s work was held and its wide dissemination long after his death.
Book Synopsis Understanding the Grand Design by : Joachim Wolf
Download or read book Understanding the Grand Design written by Joachim Wolf and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, scientific discoveries are revealing similarities with spiritual concepts, but the common basis of science and spirituality has so far escaped a logical explanation. This book describes how we can understand this common basis if we do something as simple as change our point of view. After that, it becomes a matter of common sense, a brand new type of common sense that is available to everyone, not just scientists. This new common sense, called "Holistic Logic" produces surprising and convincing results when applied to dimensions that transcend our three dimensional world. Holistic Logic leads to conclusions that agree with the teachings of Christ, Vedic Scripture, and the tenets of Buddhist philosophy. Even those unschooled in science can understand how Holistic Logic holds true for discoveries in Quantum Physics and Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Holistic Logic explains spiritual reality in a rational way, using the laws of multi-dimensional reality, much in the same way we explain physical reality with laws of physics. This may well be the breakthrough that Mankind has been seeking for centuries. Holistic Logic may finally have made the connection between the science of matter and the world of spirit. In the future, this connection may prove to be even more significant than that event some 400 years ago when Humankind first understood that the earth was not the center of the universe. Today, the world is desperate for a change. As humans, we are struggling to cope with the ever increasing problems that we are causing in our eco-systems and in ourselves. We are recklessly depleting our oil reserves, we are destroying the lungs of our planet by cutting down the rainforests, and have set in motion a pattern of global warming that can have disastrous results for us and our children. As individuals, we feel that we are at the mercy of random events. Some of us are maimed or murdered, some of us develop fatal diseases, and many of us know disappointment and guilt. We don't understand the forces that drive events nor the apparent indifference of a God who expects obedience but rains misfortune down upon us. We are powerless in the face of tragedies like that which occurred on 9/11/01 Now we have the tools that will help us to avoid destruction and turn the whole situation around. We have the ability to understand and implement the laws of spiritual reality. We have a method that will help us to understand The Grand Design and to create the kind of world that we want. We have Holistic Logic. This book explains the basics of Holistic Logic, citing 10 "Holon Principles" that, when taken together, comprise the Holistic Logic System. With the aid of clear practical examples and many illustrations, the reader will understand the building blocks of physical and spiritual reality, the mysterious union of the Whole and its Parts.
Download or read book Secret Sisters written by Joy Callaway and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nineteenth-century student at a Midwestern college fights to establish the first sorority in this novel by the author of The Fifth Avenue Artists Society. Illinois, 1881: Whitsitt College sophomore Beth Carrington has two goals to fulfill by the time she graduates: obtain a medical degree, and establish a women’s fraternity, Beta Xi Beta, that will help young women like herself to connect with and support one another while attending the male-dominated Whitsitt. Neither is an easy task. The sole female student in the physicians’ program, Beth is constantly called out by her professors and peers for having the audacity not to concentrate on a more “fitting” subject like secretarial studies. Meanwhile, secret organizations are off-limits, and simply by crowding together in a dank basement room and creating a sense of camaraderie, she and her small group of fraternity sisters risk expulsion. In order to have the fraternity recognized, she knows she needs help. She turns to the most powerful student on campus: senior Grant Richardson, Iota Gamma fraternity president and the scion of a Whitsitt family—a man she’s only acquainted with because of her longstanding friendship with his fraternity brother Will Buchannan. Staunchly traditional, Grant doesn’t see the purpose of this women’s organization, but captivated by Beth, he agrees to give her a helping hand. What she doesn’t know is how many will stop at nothing to keep her burgeoning organization out of the record books—and who she can actually trust along the way. As Beth fights for her beloved Beta Xi Beta to be recognized, she will uncover deep secrets about the college and those who surround her, and will have to put both love and friendship on the line so that history can be made. Praise for Secret Sisters “A shining example of the power of persistent women united in their aim to reshape history. . . . You’ll fly through this perfect summer read, and fall in love with the sisters of Beta Xi Beta.” —Karin Tanabe, author of The Gilded Years “This compulsive, feminist read is a rich drama. . . . The atmosphere of the era feels authentic and draws readers into college life while immersing them in the characters’ experiences.” —RT Book Reviews
