Six topics were identified as priority areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke, chemical dependency (alcohol, illicit drugs, cigarettes) diabetes, homicide and accidents, and infant mortality. Subcommittee summary reports are intended for each of these 6 areas. Data also are presented on the social characteristics of minority populations, mortality and morbidity indicators, health services and resources, an inventory of DHHS program efforts, and a survey of non-federal organizations. Recommendations are provided for health information and education, health services, health professions development, cooperative efforts, data development, and research needs. (wz).

Book Synopsis In the Nation's Compelling Interest by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book In the Nation's Compelling Interest written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is rapidly transforming into one of the most racially and ethnically diverse nations in the world. Groups commonly referred to as minorities-including Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and Alaska Natives-are the fastest growing segments of the population and emerging as the nation's majority. Despite the rapid growth of racial and ethnic minority groups, their representation among the nation's health professionals has grown only modestly in the past 25 years. This alarming disparity has prompted the recent creation of initiatives to increase diversity in health professions. In the Nation's Compelling Interest considers the benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity, and identifies institutional and policy-level mechanisms to garner broad support among health professions leaders, community members, and other key stakeholders to implement these strategies. Assessing the potential benefits of greater racial and ethnic diversity among health professionals will improve the access to and quality of healthcare for all Americans.

Book Synopsis Today's Civil Rights and Liberties Issues by : Kara E. Stooksbury
Download or read book Today's Civil Rights and Liberties Issues written by Kara E. Stooksbury and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable, one-stop resource examines where Democrats and Republicans stand on current civil rights and civil liberties issues related to voting, free speech, abortion and reproductive rights, guns, and other hot button topics. Both the Democratic and Republican parties claim that they have the best interests of the nation and its people at heart, and they are equally adamant that they have the best policy solutions to address the nation's problems and challenges. Each volume in the Across the Aisle reference series examines the stated policy positions and actual voting/legislative records of the two parties (they are not always the same) on important areas of public policy, both historically and in the present day. This volume sorts through the rhetorical clutter and partisan distortions that typify so many disputes between Republicans and Democrats and provides an accurate, balanced, and even-handed overview of the parties' attitudes and records on vital civil rights and liberties questions.
