Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glory and Shame of England, Vol. 1 I do not expect much good-will from the British Government, or most of the British aristocracy, for writing this book. I am working for the emancipation of whole nations, and the eleva tion of all men. England has always been working for the overthrow of rival nationalities, and the political subjection of men. England fights for the few - I for the many. She for Aristocracy - I for Democracy. She for the present - I for the future. No wonder we-should not agree any too well. In justice to myself, however, it should be always held'in mind, that, in speaking of England, I mean the Government and the ruling classes of the British empire - not the British people, for whom I entertain all the sympathies which spring unbidden from the common fountains of kindred, language, laws and religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional History of England Since the Accession of George the Third 1760-1860, Vol. 1 of 3 Constitutional History of England, from 1760 to 1860, having been concluded as a complete work, some years since, I have not ventured to disturb the original narrative, by any attempt to continue it to the prwent time. But more than ten years have since passed, which will ever be memorable in the consti tutional history of our country; and in preparing a new edition of this work, I have added a supplemen tary chapter, in which I have briefly reviewed the more remarkable events of this latter period, in their relations to the history of the previous hundred years, and have endeavoured to measure their influence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constitutional History of England Since the Accession of George Third, Vol. 1 of 2: 1760-1860 IT is the design of this history to trace the progress and development of the British Constitution, during a period of one hundred years; and to illustrate every material change, whether of legislation, custom, or policy, by which institutions have been improved, and abuses in the government corrected. The accession of George III. Presents no natural boundary in constitutional history: but former reigns have already been embraced in the able survey of Mr. Hallam and frequent allusions are here made to events of an earlier period, connected with the inqui ries of the present work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Blanc was a French politician and historian. He may best be known for his attempts to implement socialist reforms with the new government that was formed after the Revolution of 1848 in France. While he aimed to secure employment for the urban poor, there were ultimately too many issues with the government and the policies for Blanc to effect any real change. He was blamed for the failure of the new social program and his safety was threatened. To keep his health and his life, he was forced to flee France. He first escaped through Belgium and then found his way to London. During the years of 1847-1862, Blanc lived in England. While staying in England, he wrote a multitude of letters about England. These letters explore his experiences and his opinions about English life and politics. This first volume of his letters contains sixty individual letters in total. These cover a wide range of topics. Some of the most common topics he explores are politics, society, and British royalty. Blanc explores politics in letters such as "The English in China," "England an Aristocratic Republic," and "Rivalry Between English and Americans." He discusses British society in letters such as "Industrial Crimes," "How the Poor Die," and "National Education in England." He studies royalty in letters such as "the Queen," "The Duke of Bedford," and "Death of Prince Albert." This collection of letters would be great for any reader, but especially for the reader interested in English society and structure in the nineteenth century, or the reader interested in the life and experiences of Louis Blanc. For the first time in the serial's history, the entire volume is devoted to important work of distinguished female geographers, amply demonstrating how these scholars' professional lives enrich the discipline's history. It also illustrates how reading and writing their biographies not only expands our understanding of geography's past, but points to its more diverse future. The collection includes biographies of Doreen Massey, winner of geography's 'Nobel prize', the prix Vautrin-Lud, for her remarkable contribution to geography and neighbouring disciplines which discovered the importance of space through her work; Helen Wallis, geographer and historian of cartography who for many years had charge of the UK's foremost collection of maps; Alice Saunier-Seïté, who applied her geographical training and formidable energy to teaching and educational reform in France; Isabel Margarida André, who lived through a turbulent political period in her native Portugal and meticulously investigated its effect on women and political geography; and the many women who helped to create the UK's first Geography department - the University of Oxford's, School of Geography - including Fanny Herbertson, Nora MacMunn, Marjorie Sweeting, Mary Marshall, Barbara Kennedy and other women geographers who are memorialised in a group article.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Local Government of the United Kingdom I AM glad to hear that Mr. Clarke is materially enlarging the Scope of his excellent work Outlines of Local Govern ment, so extremely useful to those engaged in the Local Government Service. With an intimate knowledge of the importance of Local Government work, gained from Close upon forty years' experience, I do not hesitate to say that efficient Local Government Administration is of the highest importance to the well-being of our Empire and that efficiency is largely to be obtained by those engaged in it making themselves thoroughly acquainted with the law which appertains to it. Obviously, it must be to the advantage of students to have ready at hand a work, or text-book, upon which reliance can be placed to enable them to gain with ease the knowledge of which it is so absolutely necessary that they should become possessed, in order to qualify themselves for positions in the Local Government Service, whether connected with a Government Department, or with the Municipalities of the United Kingdom.
