Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As for my continuous problem with Sgt. Butch and other police officers, they didnt let up with their harassment towards me. They put pressure on business operators and used extortion tactics, forcing people not to do business with Mr. Hudon. I retaliated the only way I could, by not letting up on trying to get certain policemen out of their involvement with private security work at McDonalds as guards. For ten years certain policemen used different forms of harassment towards me, and it continued on for another five years, till I decided that I had taken enough of their crap. The policemen who were involved continued telling businesses that if they had me do works for them, policemen would not respond to their calls.

Download or read book Jakarta Batavia written by Peter J.M. Nas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines the work of twenty-one authors from East and West, some of whom are long-time residents of Jakarta and all of whom have lived and studied there for shorter or longer periods. They have in common that each of them has become fascinated by certain characteristics of Jakarta’s many-sided life. The subjects they deal with range from conditions in VOC Batavia to particular national or ethnic communities to administrative developments. The essays on early colonial Batavia yield new insights into the demographic situation bases on archival research, and those essays dealing with more modern topics make use of special sources, including maps, that are not easily accessible through libraries. Reading through this volume one encounters striking parallels between the past and the present, because many aspects of present-day Jakarta are deeply rooted in the history of the city: demography and urban morphology, environmental absurdities, traffic, and floods as well as ritual and symbolism. Historians, anthropologists, sociologists, administrators, and town planners may well draw inspiration from this kaleidoscopic picture of Indonesia’s capital.

Book Synopsis Winnebago Nation by : James B. Twitchell
Download or read book Winnebago Nation written by James B. Twitchell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are close to 8.5 million RVs on the U.S. highways and roads today, and if you are a man in your fifties, there is a good chance you have owned or are about to own a recreational vehicle. Winnebago Nation is a light-hearted look at the culture and industry behind the yearning to spend the night in oneÕs car. For the young, the roadtrip is a coming-of-age ceremony; for those later in life, it is the realization of a lifelong desire to be spontaneous, nomadic, and free. James B. Twitchell recounts the RVÕs origins and evolution over the twentieth century; its rise, fall, and rebirth as a cultural icon; its growing mechanical complexity as it evolved from an estate wagon to a converted bus to a mobile home; and its role in bolstering and challenging conceptions of American identity. Mechanical yet dreamy, independent yet needful, solitary yet clubby, adventurous yet homebound, life in a mobile home is a distillation of the American character and an important embodiment of American exceptionalism (Richie Rich and Hobo Hank spend time in essentially the same rig at the same campground, albeit for different reasons and in different levels of comfort). The frontier may be tapped out, but we still yearn for the exploratory life. Twitchell concludes with his thoughts on the future of RV communities and the possibility of mobile cities becoming a real part of the American landscape.
