Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stained Glass Ceilings speaks to the intersection of gender and power within American evangelicalism by examining the formation of evangelical leaders in two seminary communities.Southern Baptist Theological Seminary inspires a vision of human flourishing through gender differentiation and male headship. Men practice “Godly Manhood," and are taught to act as the "head" of a family, while their wives are socialized into codes of “Godly Womanhood" that prioritize prescribed gender roles. This power structure privileges men yet offers agency to their wives in women-centered spaces and through marital relationships. Meanwhile, Asbury Theological Seminary promises freedom from gendered hierarchies. Appealing to a story of gender-blind equality, Asbury welcomes women into classrooms, administrative offices, and pulpits. But the institution’s construction of egalitarianism obscures the fact that women are rewarded for adapting to an existing male-centered status quo rather than for developing their own voices as women. Featuring high-profile evangelicals such as Al Mohler and Owen Strachan, along with young seminarians poised to lead the movement in the coming decades, Stained Glass Ceilings illustrates the liabilities of white evangelical toolkits and argues that evangelical culture upholds male-centered structures of power even as it facilitates meaning and identity.

Addressing the crisis of loneliness from a fresh perspective, this book introduces belonging as an overlooked but critical aspect of a flourishing Christian life. Eric Jacobsen shows how three pieces of glass--the car windshield, TV, and smartphone--are emblematic of significant societal shifts that have created a cultural habit of physical isolation. We feel increasingly disconnected from the people and places around us. Jacobsen explains how adopting everyday practices and making changes in our neighborhoods can help us create a sense of belonging and rediscover what belonging in a place looks like. In order to effectively solve the problem of loneliness, we need to recover patterns and practices of community life that encourage us to form meaningful connections with people and stories that are part of the places where we live, work, and worship. To this end, Jacobsen offers four redemptive strategies for living a more intentional and spiritual life.

Mark's Gospel was the first to be written and tells the remarkable story of the life of Christ: Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist, and his temptation in the wilderness by Satan; the calling of the twelve apostles, and Jesus' preaching through parables; the many miracles of Jesus, from the feeding of the five thousand to walking on water and healing the sick; and the story of the Passion of Christ, from Judas' betrayal of Jesus with a kiss, to Christ's crucifixion and resurrection.

Book excerpt: Jesus was human, like you and me. If the gospel is true, he still is. Christians worldwide believe that Jesus is God. But this belief wasn’t the starting point for Jesus’ earliest followers. While Jesus’ humanity was a given for the disciples, his divinity was a truth they grew into believing—it was a journey of faith. As Christians today, we are also called into a faith journey—this time, to rediscover Jesus’ humanity. Yes, we believe that Jesus is God, but do we truly believe that Jesus is human? And if so, how does that transform our own experience of being human? Through eye-opening yet down-to-earth reflections, Jesus Journey invites you to encounter Jesus again—as if for the first time—by experiencing his breathing, heart-beating, body-and-blood, crying-and-laughing humanity. Join Bible teacher and storyteller Trent Sheppard as he shines new light on the vibrant humanity of the historical Jesus through an up-close look at Jesus’ relationships with Mary and Joseph, with the God he called Abba, with his closest friends and followers, and how, ultimately, his crucifixion and resurrection finally and forever redefine what we mean by the word God. Come encounter the human who radically transforms our view of God. Come encounter the God who forever changes what it means to be human.

Book excerpt: The eighties were my formative years, and while other teenagers were gyrating to rock 'n' roll, we were praying for revival. We were taking communion, not cocaine. We treated virginity like a wedding present, not a cold sore. And why wouldn't we? We were told we could be, we already were, anything we wanted to be... We were armed and dangerous. Armed with the power of God and dangerous in the eyes of Satan. Tanya Levin grew up in the church that became Hillsong—the country’s most ambitious, entrepreneurial and influential religious corporation. People in Glass Houses tells how a small Assemblies of God church in a suburban school hall became a multi-million dollar tax-free enterprise and a powerful force in Australia today. Opening up the world of Christian fundamentalism, this is a powerful, personal and at times very funny exploration of an all-singing, all-swaying mega church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a Glass Darkly is a collection of essays by scholars who argue that Baptists are frequently misrepresented, by outsiders as well as insiders, as members of an unchanging monolithic sect. In contemporary discussions of religious denominations, it is often fashionable and easy to make bold claims regarding the history, beliefs, and practices of certain groups. Select versions of Baptist history have been used to vindicate incomplete or inaccurate assertions, attitudes, and features of Baptist life and thought. Historical figures quickly become saints, and overarching value systems can minimize the unsavory realities that would contribute to a truer interpretation of Baptist life. The essays in this volume use the term Baptist in the broadest sense to refer to those Christians who identify themselves as Baptists and who baptize by immersion as a non-sacramental church rite. Over the past four hundred years, Baptists have grown from a persecuted minority to a significant portion of America’s religious population. They have produced their fair share of controversies and colorful characters that have, in turn, contributed to a multifaceted history. But what does it mean to be a “real Baptist”? Some look to historical figures as heroic exemplars of Baptist core values. Others consider cultural, social, or political issues to be guideposts for Baptist identity. Through a Glass Darkly dives deeper into history for answers, revealing a more complete version of the expansive and nuanced history of one of America’s most influential religious groups. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the sky should become a sea of glass mingled with fire, will you be ready? The sea of glass mingled with fire is symbolic to the holiness of God in wrath. The apostle John according to his revelation envisiond within the spirit of his mind, while he was in the Spirit on the Lord's day (the day in which the ultimate wrath of God will be poured out into the earth by the seven angels having the seven last plagues of Almighty God.) God will pour out his final ultimate plagues on the world of the ungodly in this earth! John in his revelation notes these seven angels with these plagues. Then the apostle envision the people of God as it were, "Standing by (on in some translations) a sea of glass mingled with fire. They had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his mark, and over his image, and over the number of his name. John saw them holding harps which Almighty God had given them. These redeemed people of God sang the song of Moses, and of the Lamb. As the children of Israel was delived by supernatural means as they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, they after crossing through the sea, stood by the shore of the red Sea, and saw the Egyptians dead bodies laid out on the shore, after God had poured out his ultimate wrath upon them and had at the same identical time shown his loving mercy on the Israelites, for God fought for them that day as Pharoah and his mighty army persued them into the sea to destroy them. When the children of Israel had gotton to the Red Sea, they found themselves in the midst of an impossible situation: their enemies were all around them and Pharaoh and his army were behind them. They cried out to Moses and to God to deliver them out of a horrific situation of certain death! Moses cried out to God, and God rebuked Moses and instructed him to utilize the rod which was in his hand: Moses instructed the children of Israel to "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord!" The people of God today are in this same postion spiritually speaking: we are waiting for the supernatural deliverance of Almighty God at the seventh trump of God announcing the coming of our deliverer Jesus Christ: for the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ shall rise immortal spirit, and we shall be changed and "Caught Up" together with them in the clouds, "to meet the Lord in the air," and we will forever be with the Lord. In the revelation of the apostle John, he has been projected within the spirit of his mind, by Almighty God, to this future day, shortly ahead of us, wherein the apostle envisions the people of God in their ultimate victory! Jesus will return at the worst time in the history of mankind (WWIII) just prior to the seven angels' pouring out into the earth the seven "last" plagues of Almighty God: the mercy of God, the pureness of God, and the holiness of God is represented by the sea's glass mingled with fire, the fire representing God's wrath mixed also in the sea of glass! My friend, if the sky should become a sea of glass, will you be ready? Jesus have instructed the people of God to remain continually in the state of radiness, "Be ye ready for you know not the day or the hour your Lord will come." Will you be ready?

Book excerpt: Innovative and lavishly illustrated, Painting the Gospel offers an indispensable contribution to conversations about African American art, theology, politics, and identity in Chicago. Kymberly N. Pinder escorts readers on an eye-opening odyssey to the murals, stained glass, and sculptures dotting the city's African American churches and neighborhoods. Moving from Chicago's oldest black Christ figure to contemporary religious street art, Pinder explores ideas like blackness in public, art for black communities, and the relationship of Afrocentric art to Black Liberation Theology. She also focuses attention on art excluded from scholarship due to racial or religious particularity. Throughout, she reflects on the myriad ways private black identities assert public and political goals through imagery. Painting the Gospel includes maps and tour itineraries that allow readers to make conceptual, historical, and geographical connections among the works.

While other books have focused on foreshadows and glimpses of Messiah Jesus in the Hebrew Scriptures, Joseph Farah set out to find the Good News of redemption, repentance, restoration and resurrection.
