Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and Its Tributaries The study of Christian origins during the last century has passed through two well-marked phases. Attention was directed in the earlier period to the inner development of the primitive Church. The New Testament writings were critically examined with a view to establishing their date and authorship and purpose, their relation to one another and to Christian practice and doctrine. This field of inquiry has not yet by any means been fully explored, but it has opened out into a far wider one. It has been discovered that the new movement was affected, at almost every point, by the general life of the age, and that many conceptions which were formerly regarded as purely Christian have their affinities in contemporary religion and philosophy. The investigation of these alien sources of Christian thought has been eagerly pressed forward in recent years by a host of scholars, some of whom have built farreaching conclusions on very slender evidence, while others are too obviously bent on discrediting the Christian message by identifying it with one type or another of ancient superstition. These extravagances must not be taken too seriously. Every new instrument for the better understanding of our religion has at first been used as a weapon against it. One has only to recall how the literary criticism which has done so much to establish the Bible on a surer basis was supposed, a generation ago, to have undermined its authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the subtitle indicates, this book is not intended to be anything more than a brief introduction to the four gospels. It treats questions of sources, date and authorship, and the mutual relations of one Gospel to another. It does not attempt to discuss the deepest and most beautiful things in the Gospels, but rather those questions about which we must form opinions if we are to read these unique works with insight and understanding. This edition has been carefully revised, and notes and references have been added relating to the Q, the Proto-Luke, and Bussmann's Hypotheses, the authorship of 1 John, and the critical problems connected with the Fourth Gospel; and it should be of service to students and to the growing number of readers who are keenly interested in the question of Gospel Origins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the practice of eating together as Christian worship The gospel story is filled with meals. It opens in a garden and ends in a feast. Records of the early church suggest that believers met for worship primarily through eating meals. Over time, though, churches have lost focus on the centrality of food— and with it a powerful tool for unifying Christ’s diverse body. But today a new movement is under way, bringing Christians of every denomination, age, race, and sexual orientation together around dinner tables. Men and women nervous about stepping through church doors are finding God in new ways as they eat together. Kendall Vanderslice shares stories of churches worshiping around the table, introducing readers to the rising contemporary dinner-church movement. We Will Feast provides vision and inspiration to readers longing to experience community in a real, physical way.

Book Synopsis Dictionary of Paul and his letters by : GERALD F HAWTHORNE
Download or read book Dictionary of Paul and his letters written by GERALD F HAWTHORNE and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 1815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Dictionary of Paul and his letters' is a one-of-a-kind reference work. Following the format of its highly successful companion volume, the 'Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels', this Dictionary is designed to bring students, teachers, ministers and laypeople abreast of the established conclusions and significant recent developments in Pauline scholarship. No other single reference work presents as much information focused exclusively on Pauline theology, literature, background and scholarship. In a field that recently has undergone significant shifts in perspective, the 'Dictionary of Paul and His Letters' offers a summa of Paul and Pauline studies. In-depth articles focus on individual theological themes (such as law, resurrection and Son of God), broad theological topics (such as Christology, eschatology and the death of Christ), methods of interpretation (such as rhetorical criticism and social-scientific approaches), background topics (such as apocalypticism, Hellenism and Qumran) and various other subjects specifically related to the scholarly study of Pauline theology and literature (such as early catholicism, the centre of Paul's theology, and Paul and his interpreters since F. C. Baur). Separate articles are also devoted to each of the Pauline letters, to hermeneutics and to preaching Paul today. The 'Dictionary of Paul and His Letters' takes its place alongside the 'Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels' in presenting the fruit of evangelical New Testament scholarship at the end of the twentieth century - committed to the authority of Scripture, utilising the best of critical methods, and maintaining dialogue with contemporary scholarship and challenges facing the church.

Download or read book Jesus and His Church written by R. Newton Flew and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contents I. The Teaching of Jesus II. The Primitive Church III. The Unity of the Apostolic Teaching IV. Conclusion The essence of the book is a five-fold argument. First, in Part One evidence is collected from the first three Gospels, under these five heads, to prove that the teaching and activity of Jesus were directed to the gathering of a community, the true Israel, the newly constituted People of God. Second, the five marks of the new community, already discovered in the mind of our Lord, are seen to characterize the life of the Promitive Church . . . third, the same five marks reappear in all the main types of teaching in the New Testament. --from the Preface to the 2nd edition
