Book Synopsis Gospel According to St John by : Andrew Lincoln
Download or read book Gospel According to St John written by Andrew Lincoln and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11-25 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnificent series of biblical commentaries known as Black's New Testament Commentaries (BNTC) under the General Editorship of Professor Morna Hooker has had a gap for far too long - it has lacked an up to date commentary on the Fourth Gospel. Professor Andrew Lincoln now fills this gap with his excellent new commentary. The key questions for scholars are gone into thoroughly- questions of historicity, the use of historical traditions and sources, relationship to the Synoptics, authorship, setting, first readers and Professor Lincoln makes his own position on these issues abundantly clear. The Fourth Gospel raises a number of problems generally known as The Johannine Question. According to tradition the Gospel was written by St John the Apostle. The authenticity of the tradition is examined in the introduction but the textual issues are examined within the commentary itself. For example one problem is that Chapters 15 and 16 seem in early versions to have preceded chapter 14. Chapter 21 must have been a later addition. The purpose of the Gospel as stated in Chapter 20 v 31 is to strenghten the reader's faith in Jesus as the Christ and the Son of God. But even the celebrated prologue has given rise to much speculation, whereas most commentators believe it is the key to the Gospel as a whole. These issues are meat and drink to scholars but in Professor Lincoln's expert hands they are extremely interesting and highly pertinent to our contemporary understanding of the Gospel.

Book excerpt: In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism. Book Synopsis Commentary on the Gospel of John by : Theodore of Mopsuestia
Download or read book Commentary on the Gospel of John written by Theodore of Mopsuestia and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore of Mopsuestia serves as one of the most important exemplars of Antiochene exegesis of his generation. While charges of heterodoxy against Theodore may not be entirely justified, there remains an apparent dualism in his Christology that should be critically viewed in light of the later Chalcedonian formula. With this caution, there still remains much that is valuable for contemporary readers, whether preachers, students or lay people interested in the early church?s understanding of the Gospel of John. Here for the first time is a complete English translation of this valuable work, ably translated by Marco Conti and edited by Joel C. Elowsky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walk with Those Who Walked with Jesus In the Gospels we witness the most crucial turning point in world history and the reason we believe what we do. The New Testament begins with four accounts of the “good news” of the Son of God. Drawing on the research of Dallas Theological Seminary scholars, The Bible Knowledge Commentary: Gospels explores similarities and differences among Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The authors also look at difficult or confusing passages, apologetic evidence for these eyewitness accounts, and what we can learn about Christ-like living from observing the life of Jesus. With dozens of visuals and Old Testament cross-references, this commentary is one of the most thorough and theologically sound studies of the Gospels. Journey with Jesus as if for the first time in this detailed look at His life on earth.
Book Synopsis The Miracles of Jesus According to John by : Stephen S. Kim
Download or read book The Miracles of Jesus According to John written by Stephen S. Kim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our age of theological relativism, Jesus' question to His own disciples continues to ring true: "Who do the people say that the Son of Man is?" Through Jesus' seven miracles and His seven "I Am" sayings, the apostle John provides a clear answer to that all-important question. Furthermore, what do Jesus' miracles represent? Are they designed to point to something or someone? In our "supernatural-crazed" culture that affects even evangelical Christianity, it is refreshing to be reminded that biblical miracles were never arbitrary but were always purposeful, authenticating God's message and His messenger(s). In the Gospel of John, the miracles of Jesus are both Christological, that is, they highlight Jesus' Person, and eschatological, that is, they foreshadow the work the Messiah will do in His future Advent. The miracles remind us that God's desire for every believer is first and foremost a spiritual relationship with Him through His Son. Furthermore, Jesus' miracles also remind us that God's work in and for every believer will be fully and ultimately realized in the everlasting life.
Book Synopsis The Johannine Discourses and the Teaching of Jesus in the Synoptics by : Philipp F. Bartholomä
Download or read book The Johannine Discourses and the Teaching of Jesus in the Synoptics written by Philipp F. Bartholomä and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book John's Use of Ezekiel written by Brian Neil Peterson and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have long puzzled over the distinctive themes and sequence of John’s narrative in contrast to the Synoptic Gospels. Brian Neil Peterson now offers a remarkable explanation for some of the most unusual features of John, including the early placement of Jesus’ “cleansing” of the temple, the emphasis on “signs” confirming Jesus’ identity, the prominence of Jesus’ “I Am” sayings, and a number of others. The Fourth Evangelist relied on models, motifs, and even the macrostructure of the Book of Ezekiel.
Book Synopsis The Gospel According to John by : D. A. Carson
Download or read book The Gospel According to John written by D. A. Carson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary seeks above all to explain the text of John's Gospel to those whose privilege and responsibility it is to minister the Word of God to others, to preach and to lead Bible studies. I have tried to include the kind of information they need to know, but to do so in such a way that the informed layperson could also use the work in personal study of the Bible, exclusively for purposes of personal growth in edification and understanding. In particular, I have attempted: (1) To make clear the flow of the text. (2) To engage a small but representative part of the massive secondary literature on John. (3) To draw a few lines towards establishing how the Fourth Gospel contributes to biblical and systematic theology. (4) To offer a consistent exposition of John's Gospel as an evangelistic Gospel. - Preface.
