And this is the practice of the Reformed Church of England at the present day. She bribes her Ministers to suppress the truth. When a Priest is ordained, he promises, so to minister the Doctrine of Christ, as this Church hath received the same: so that if the Priest shall afterwards arrive at the discovery that his Church is mistaken, he may not dare to say so. Then again the Priest promises that he will reverently obey his Ordinary, and other chief Ministers, and submit himself to their godly judgments. The effect of this, is, to leave no freedom of thought to the Priest. He may read his Bible, but he must not dare to interpret it contrary to the faith of his Church; else he would come under the censure of his Bishop, to whose godly judgment he must submit himself. Thus the Clergy of the Church of England are bribed to suppress the truth. Most of them are men of moderate means, which are quite unable to bear the enormous expenses of an Ecclesiastical suit. In this way the power of teaching is taken away, from those whose profession is to teach. This is a monstrous evil, which is well worthy of the attention of the Legislature of Great Britain. All men here are free, except the Clergy. The word occurs forty times in the first sixteen verses of this chapter, and is in every other instance rendered 'beget'. The only difference in the original is, that this has the passive form, while all the others have the active. For example, in v. 5, we have, according to the com. Ver., Salmon begat 13002 of Rachab Let the same be expressed passively, and we shall have Booz was begotten of which latter construction is parallel with the case in hand. Besides, the use of the phrase, 'of whom',4 in this construction, makes Mary the remote object of the verb, and thus precludes a reference to her, like that in the com. Ver., as its subject. On this account 'was born' has been changed to 'was begotten', and the collocation slightly altered, to improve the idiom. Such is the rendering of Penn, Eras, Beza, Bengel, and others.
