Download or read book Reading Thackeray written by Michael Lund and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars are aware that serialization was the usual publication format for the Victorian novel, few take into account how this special reading experience affected the meaning of Thackeray's novels for his audience. Thackeray used a number of techniques to encourage his readers to take an active and prolonged part in his installment fiction. Michael Lund's study focuses on the reading of Thackeray's novels and investigates how Victorian understanding of Vanity Fair and Thackeray's other major texts was significantly shaped by the manner in which readers encountered these novels. Situating modern readers in the context of the Victorian audience, particularly within the monthly serial mode, Lund demonstrates in what ways Thackeray made use of his readers' prolonged commitment to his fictional worlds to shape and refine Victorian culture in positive ways.

And Richard, Duke of Gloucester, plots, trying to find a way to save George from being put to death by their eldest -- and powerful -- brother, the King. So when the Duke sees his old and loyal servant, monk-turned-travelling salesman Roger the Chapman, among the crowd at the trial he recognises that he has a chance. If only the chapman-sleuth could prove that the kinswoman of the King's favorite leman hadn't poisoned her taciturn husband. If Isolda Bonifant, the daughter of a well-established London goldsmith, were innocent and her name cleared, then Edward's chief mistress -- cousin of the accused Isolda -- would be more than willing to do the wily Duke's bidding. But Roger the Chapman must act fast and, in a complex case like this one and with the pressure of Richard of Gloucester upon him, he can't simply rely on his intuition.|"Detailed descriptions of London streets, houses, food and goldsmithing techniques combine with convincing characters in a lively story sure to please existing fans and attract new ones"|"Smoothly honed plotting by Sedley; for all collections"

Download or read book A Daughter's Love written by John Guy and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Whitbread Award–winning author of Queen of Scots presents a “brilliantly observed” dual biography of Sir Thomas More and his daughter (The New York Times). Sir Thomas More’s life is well known: his opposition to Henry VIII’s marriage to Anne Boleyn, his arrest for treason, his execution and martyrdom. Yet a major figure in his life—his beloved daughter Margaret—has been largely airbrushed out of the story. Margaret was her father’s closest confidant and played a critical role in safeguarding his intellectual legacy. In A Daughter’s Love, John Guy restores her to her rightful place in Tudor history. Always her father’s favorite child, Margaret was such an accomplished scholar by age eighteen that her work earned praise from Erasmus of Rotterdam. She remained devoted to her father after her marriage—and paid the price in estrangement from her husband. When More was thrown into the Tower of London, Margaret collaborated with him on his most famous letters from prison, smuggled them out at great personal risk, and even rescued his head after his execution. Drawing on original sources that have been ignored by generations of historians, Guy creates a dramatic new portrait of both Thomas More and the daughter whose devotion secured his place in history.
