Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Road L. M. Montgomery The Golden Road is a 1913 novel by Canadian author L. M. Montgomery. This book is preceded by The Story Girl. The plot is based around the character Beverley who remembers his childhood days with his brother Felix and friends and cousins Felicity, Cecily, Dan, Sara Stanley (the "Story Girl"), hired-boy Peter and neighbor Sara Ray. The children often played in their family's orchard and had many adventures, even creating their own newspaper, called Our Magazine. More character development takes place in this novel than in its predecessor, and the reader is able to watch the children grow up; in particular, they are able to watch Sara Stanley leave the Golden Road of childhood forever. They also are able to see the beginnings of a relationship between Peter and Felicity, as chemistry between them starts to build; it also seems that Beverly and Sara Stanley are drawn to each other, but this is left undeveloped. Throughout the story it is hinted that Beverly's cousin, Cecily, is consumptive; in a passage where the Story Girl tells their futures, the adult Beverly confirms that Cecily never left the Golden Road. As well, Beverly strongly hints that Peter and Felicity will be married. The novel ends after Sara's father collects her to give her a proper education, and their small group is never complete again.

Book excerpt: The true story of a remarkable young woman's struggle to find a home in the world Caille Millner is a rising star on the literary scene. A graduate of Harvard University, she was first published at age sixteen and was recently named one of Columbia Journalism Review's Ten Young Writers on the Rise. The Golden Road is Millner's clear-eyed and transfixing memoir. From her childhood in a Latino neighborhood in San Jose, California, and coming of age in a more affluent yet quietly hostile Silicon Valley suburb to a succession of imagined promised lands-Harvard, London, post-apartheid South Africa, New York City-this is the story of Millner's search for a place where she can define herself on her own terms and live a life that matters.

Book excerpt: Michael and Jillian Dansky seemed to have it all–a happy marriage, two successful careers, a bright future. But late one October evening, all that changed. Driving home from a Halloween masquerade, Michael momentarily nods off behind the wheel–and wakes to find nothing is the same. Standing by his car is the little girl he came within a breath of running down. She leads Michael to her “home,” an empty house haunted by whispers, and sends him away with a haunting whisper of her own: “come find me.” But in the weeks to follow, it’s clear that someone–or some thing–doesn’t want Michael to find her: ominous figures in grey coats with misshapen faces are following him everywhere. And then Jillian wakes one morning replaced by a cold, cruel, vindictive woman Michael hardly recognizes as his wife. Michael must now search not only for the lost girl, but for a way to find the Jillian he's always loved, and to do so he must return to where the nightmare began. Down an isolated lane where he’ll find them, or die trying. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book excerpt: The Way of All Flesh is one of the time-bombs of literature," said V. S. Pritchett. "One thinks of it lying in Samuel Butler's desk for thirty years, waiting to blow up the Victorian family and with it the whole great pillared and balustraded edifice of the Victorian novel." Written between 1873 and 1884 but not published until 1903, a year after Butler's death, his marvelously uninhibited satire savages Victorian bourgeois values as personified by multiple generations of the Pontifex family. A thinly veiled account of his own upbringing in the bosom of a God-fearing Christian family, Butler's scathingly funny depiction of the self-righteous hypocrisy underlying nineteenth-century domestic life was hailed by George Bernard Shaw as "one of the summits of human achievement."

Book excerpt: FROM THE AWARD-WINNING, BESTSELLING AUTHOR AND CO-HOST OF THE CHART-TOPPING EMPIRE PODCAST – A REVOLUTIONARY NEW HISTORY OF THE DIFFUSION OF INDIAN IDEAS 'A master storyteller' Sunday Times 'Richly woven, highly readable ... Written with passion and verve' Spectator 'A more masterful and accessible survey ... would be hard to find ... Enthralling' Literary Review India is the forgotten heart of the ancient world For a millennium and a half, India was a confident exporter of its diverse civilisation, creating around it a vast empire of ideas. Indian art, religions, technology, astronomy, music, dance, literature, mathematics and mythology blazed a trail across the world, along a Golden Road that stretched from the Red Sea to the Pacific. William Dalrymple draws from a lifetime of scholarship to highlight India's oft-forgotten position as the heart of ancient Eurasia. For the first time, he gives a name to this spread of Indian ideas that transformed the world. From the largest Hindu temple in the world at Angkor Wat to the Buddhism of China, from the trade that helped fund the Roman Empire to the creation of the numerals we use today (including zero), India transformed the culture and technology of its ancient world – and our world today as we know it. Praise for William Dalrymple and The Anarchy 'A superb historian with a visceral understanding of India' The Times 'Magnificently readable, deeply researched and richly atmospheric' Francis Wheen, Mail on Sunday

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a complete heathen and living a wild life of booze, weed, and married men, Melany was involved in most things she ought not to have been. As a proud atheist and believing in reincarnation, she did not believe in angels or demons, God, Satan, heaven or hell. While living and working in the Middle East, the spirit realm opened up to her one evening. Here, she was physically attacked by two demons, who told her that they were going to kill her. After a failed attempt at finding an exorcist she called out to God, telling Him that if He was real, that He should show up in a way that she could not deny. He did. Melany got radically touched by Jesus Christ that night and an amazing God adventure began that, to date, has taken her to six nations of the world. For the believer, this book will set your heart on fire for "the more" of God, realizing that you do not need to have a title or a twenty-year walk with the Lord to be used of Him in a powerful way. To the non-believer, this book will compel you to reconsider eternity.

Book excerpt: In Milestones on a Golden Road, Richard King discusses pivotal works of fiction published under the watchful eye of China’s Communist regime between 1945 and 1980. Addressing questions of literary production, King looks at how writers dealt with shifting ideological demands, what indigenous and imported traditions inspired them, and how they were able to depict a utopian Communist future to their readers, as the present took a very different turn. Early “red classics” were followed by works featuring increasingly lurid images of joyful socialism, and later by fiction exposing the Mao era as an age of irrationality, arbitrary rule, and suffering – a Golden Road that had led to nowhere.

Book excerpt: Over their 30-year career as one of the most influential and successful bands in the world, the Grateful Dead released just a handful of studio albums and a small number of live albums. With a reputation built on their stellar live performances, it was only in their later years and after the death of their iconic frontman Jerry Garcia, that they began the release of over 100 recordings from their vaults that documented the magic they produced on stage. This book charts the history of the band through these hundreds of releases, as well as their studio recordings and their key solo albums, that show what made this pioneering band unique. From the heady days of the San Francisco underground in the 60s to the stadiums of the 90s, via Woodstock, Altamont, Europe and Egypt, the recorded history of the Grateful Dead covers their constantly evolving music as they changed the way that music was played, recorded and experienced. With former members of the band continuing to attract new audiences both live and online, the magic created by the Grateful Dead remains a vital ingredient in contemporary rock, and this book uncovers and celebrates the recordings that capture the band at their best.
