Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALIEN ABDUCTION OVER A CENTURY AGO? The story was related to a Catholic priest by an elderly man on his deathbed. The man claimed that as a boy he was part of a posse searching for stolen cattle in the mountains south of Tucson, Arizona in 1899, when “a huge, silver bowl in the sky” flew ahead of the posse. The lawman in charge ordered the group to split up. The witness said “a tiny man in silver-colored clothes” confronted him with a hollow tube. The boy drew his revolver and fired six shots into the creature. The little man flickered like a candle flame and disappeared. The boy rejoined the posse, and the lawman set off alone to investigate. About an hour later, the silver bowl rose into the air and took off. When the posse rode to the area where they’d seen the UFO ascend, they found the lawman’s horse, but no sign of the man himself. An Apache tracker with the group said the depth of the animal’s hoofprints showed the man had left the horse at a certain point. However, there were no bootprints at the spot indicating he’d dismounted and proceeded on foot. The posse searched the area for several days, but found no trace of the missing lawman.

Book excerpt: This fascinating and insightful tour through present-day meetings of Spiritualists, UFOlogists, and dowsers illuminates our obsession with the paranormal and challenges the misunderstanding of the paranormal as a marginal or inconsequential feature of America's religious landscape. According to a 2005 Gallup poll, 75 percent of Americans believe in some form of paranormal activity. The United States has had a collective fascination with the paranormal since the mid-1800s, and it remains an integral part of our culture. Haunted Ground: Journeys through a Paranormal America examines three of the most vibrant paranormal gatherings in the United States—Lily Dale, a Spiritualist summer camp; the Roswell UFO Festival; and the American Society of Dowsers' annual convention of "water witches"—to explore and explain the reasons for our obsession with the paranormal. Both academically informed and thoroughly entertaining, this book takes readers on a "road trip" through our nation, guided by professor of American religion Darryl V. Caterine, PhD. The author interprets seemingly unrelated case studies of phantasmagoria collectively as an integral part of the modern discourse about "nature" as ultimate reality. Along the way, Dr. Caterine reveals how Americans' interest in the paranormal is rooted in their anxieties about cultural, political, and economic instability—and in a historic sense of alienation and homelessness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nuclear physicist and leading UFO researcher reveals the science behind interstellar travel and the US government’s extraterrestrial cover-up. In this comprehensive look at the scientific data concerning flying saucers, nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman distills more than forty years of research and explains it all in layman’s terms. He shows how travel to nearby stars is possible without violating the laws of physics, and examines data from a number of scientific UFO studies that nearly no one else has discussed in detail. Photographs of little-known advanced propulsion systems—some of which he worked on himself—are included as well. Beyond his presentation of the scientific data, Friedman demonstrates that the United States government’s disinformation policy regarding UFOs amounts to nothing less than a Cosmic Watergate. He reveals the reasons for this cover-up, possible reasons for aliens to come to Earth, and their reasons for not landing on the White House lawn. In this book, readers will discover: What type of energy and technologies could provide travel between the stars. The most likely regions of the universe to cultivate alien life. Why the aliens have come to Earth. Who believes in the flying saucer phenomenon

Book excerpt: Trevor J. Hawkeswood is a scientist who has experienced hundreds of paranormal events in his lifetime. In Light and Dark, he recounts some of these incredible interactions. He believes that reality occurs on two separate but interwoven planes of existence the Earth plane and the multiple levels of the spiritual planes, including the lower levels, from where the dark souls of humans who have died reach out to us. He has experienced more than one hundred sightings of the shadow people, or "black ghosts." He credits guardian angels with saving him from harm or certain death on a number of occasions. Hawkeswood also shares accounts of his numerous sightings of strange aerial phenomena he believes were caused by UFOs. He has personally experienced clairaudience voices from beyond and precognition, or the ability to see the future. His detailed account of a unique out-of-body experience (OOBE) challenges what is known about this remarkable ability. His OOBE was unlike anything that has ever been described by others who have experienced it and he shares it all in Light and Dark. But it hasn't all been safe or pleasant. At eighteen, he survived a terrifying encounter with a demon gargoyle who tried to steal his soul energy after paralysing him. A comprehensive handbook for the paranormal enthusiast, Hawkeswood's work also provides a glossary and reference list of English-language UFO books. In Light and Dark, he shares a lifetime of experiences, ideas, and theories about this fascinating field of study.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes accounts of purported UFO sightings and Roswell *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "The point is that the idea of space vehicles shaped like flying saucers was imprinted in the national psyche for many years prior to 1947, when the Roswell incident took place. It didn't take much stretching for the first observers of UFOs to assume that the unknown objects hovering in the sky had the same disk shape as the science fictional vehicles." - Frank Wu, illustrator for science fiction magazines When people think about unidentified flying objects (UFOs), they tend to think of flying discs piloted by gray beings with large heads and enormous eyes. They tend to think that these sightings only started relatively recently and that belief in UFOs is some sort of modern religion brought on, perhaps, by the very justifiable fears of a nuclear age. But a study of the phenomenon quickly reveals that humanity has been seeing UFOs since the beginning of recorded history and perhaps a lot longer than that. Modern Ufology focuses on mysterious lights on Ceres or tales of alien abduction, but this wasn't always the case. Looking at how belief in the UFO phenomenon has changed and how it has stayed the same sheds new light on how culture and belief changes over time. You don't have to believe humans are actually being visited by aliens from another planet to recognize the importance of UFOs in human society. Any widespread belief that endures for centuries is worthy of study, and as always, cases exist that can't be explained away as simple "belief" ... Everyone is familiar with theories about UFOs, or "flying saucers" as they were often called then, but even this name dates back only to 1947. Before that time, they were called "ghost rockets" or "ghost airplanes" or "ghost airships." Before the age of flight, the flying objects were called various things such as "flying chariots." No matter what terminology is used, every generation has clearly had its own belief that mankind is not alone. For example, few things in American history are as controversial as the Roswell Crash. The one undeniable fact is that something happened near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, but beyond that, the facts become murky as memories and evidence lose their luster over the years. That said, the impact of an unidentified object continues to mystify residents, visitors and the curious, and it has not only put Roswell on the map but has kept it there for thousands of tourists. Nonetheless, skepticism about the official version of the incident prevails, and a countless number of people continue to believe the American government covered up a crash landing by aliens. As John B. Alexander, Ph. D., a former project manager at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and consultant to the CIA, put it, "Attempting to come to any complete resolution of the incident is a fool's errand, as whatever the truth may have been has become so distorted over time that facts have merged inextricably with fiction." Flying Saucers: The Mysterious History of the UFO Phenomenon looks at the unidentified flying object craze. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about flying saucers like never before, in no time at all.

Allen Hynek, the astronomer who invented the concept of "Close Encounters" with alien life, inspired Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster classic science fiction epic film and is the subject of History Channel's Project Blue Book, and made an entire nation want to believe in UFOs. In June 1947, private pilot Kenneth Arnold looked out his cockpit window and saw a group of nine silvery crescents weaving between the peaks of the Cascade Mountains at an estimated 1,200 miles an hour. The media, the military, and the scientific community—led by J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer hired by the Air Force—debunked this and many other Unidentified Flying Object sightings reported across the country. But after years of denials, Hynek made a shocking pronouncement: UFOs are real. Thirty years after his death, Hynek’s agonizing transformation from skepticism to true believer remains one of the great misunderstood stories of science. In this definitive biography, Mark O'Connell reveals for the first time how Hynek’s work both as a celebrated astronomer and as the U. S. Air Force’s go-to UFO expert for nearly twenty years stretched the boundaries of modern science, laid the groundwork for acceptance of the possibility of UFOs, and was the basis of the hit film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. With unprecedented access to Hynek’s personal and professional files, O’Connell smashes conventional wisdom to reveal the intriguing man and scientist beneath the legend. Tracing Hynek’s career, O'Connell examines Hynek’s often-ignored work as a professional astronomer to create a complete portrait of a groundbreaking enthusiast who became an American cult icon and transformed the way we see our world and our universe.

Book excerpt: During the Turbulent Era of the 1930s, America found itself teetering on the verge of entering its second World War. It also found itself on the cusp of the Golden Age of Flying Saucers which would begin in the late 1940s. Prepare to join authors Noe Torres and John LeMay one more time to investigate the final unexplored frontier for UFO sightings: the 1930s! As you read this book, you'll ask yourself: Were the mysterious "Ghost Fliers" seen across America's skies enemy aircraft, or UFOs in disguise à la the Great Airship Wave of the late 1890s? What is the secret of the Underground City of the Lizard People buried under Los Angeles? Was a small-statured mummy discovered in a lonely Wyoming cave just a mummified infant suffering from anencephaly, or was the body really from the stars? Were green fireballs seen hurtling through the skies of Dulce, New Mexico, a sign of things to come in the future? Was a flaming airship crash in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in some way related to Mothman? Were alien bodies and a recovered disk stored beneath the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. a decade prior to the 1947 Roswell Incident? Did a mass alien abduction remove an entire tribe from the shores of Angikuni Lake? And finally, did UFOs help to start World War II?
