Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Oratory: Or Selections From the Speeches of Eminent Americans No apology can be required for presenting to the American public a volume of Speeches selected from the best efforts of their own statesmen. Public discussion is elsewhere the province of a few; in our country, it is the duty of almost all. It is not only desirable, therefore, but absolutely necessary, that all should have at hand those models, which the peculiar character of our institutions, the tone of our national thought, and the exigencies of our history, have combined to produce. Foreign orators may serve as examples of style, but the inhabitants of a republic must seek at home for the intellectual results of the government they have chosen, and for the illustration of those principles by which it is to be sustained. If they cannot always find the same refinement of language, or the same elaborateness of thought, which in older countries is the result of hereditary wealth and more scholastic education, they will discover at least a vigorous and masculine diction, patriotic sentiments, and unflinching independence, the appropriate attendants upon themes for the most part grave, and frequently severe. The editor does not affect to have used any extraordinary research in the compilation now presented to the reader. The character of the subjects discussed has had great influence with him in the selections he has made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For the first time, knowledge of the classics extended beyond aristocratic males to the middle class, women, African Americans, and frontier settlers, but the Civil War led to a radical alteration of the educational system that steadily eroded their preeminence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orators of the American Revolution Our leading speakers, in Colonial and Revolutionary times, were distinguished not more for their general ability, than for the wonderful originality of talent with which each in particular was characterized. To indicate this individuality of oratorical excellence, and the results which by a mighty unity in diversity were produced, is the Object of the present publication. Each one of the following portraitures briefly comprehends the earthly career of its subject but, in accordance with the above avowal, the reader may expect to meet with historical details, only so far 5s they are requisite to explain the pre liminary training and elucidate the peculiar eloquence of the master under consideration. The dates and circumstances employed for this purpose the author has gathered from all the resources within his reach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best American Orations of Today The speeches of Webster, Clay, Pitt, Patrick Henry, Calhoun, Lincoln, Beecher, and many others, are to be found in almost every Speaker and Reader now published. They have been de claimed for years from every school platform in the country, and with most inspiring in uence. Andrew Draper says: The old-time school declamation on recurring red-letter days in the regular 'routine of the early schools was a great stimulant to boys and girls. It was not more in the words that were heard than in the fact that the boys themselves gave expression to them. It is the doing of things which stirs ambition and creates power, even the doing of things which some one else has done. There are plenty of men prominent in affairs who would gladly testify to the uplifting in uences of the master pieces of oratory and literature on their own lives by means of the school declamation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorable American Speeches A little over a year ago, the school for apprentices of the Lakeside Press was organized, last year's volume being the first production of the school. Another year's experience has strengthened the faith of the publishers in their plan. The plan is to place boys at their life-work immediately after their graduation from grammar school, thus avoiding the usual demoralizing hiatus of two or three years between school and serious employment; to teach during a portion of the day the technique of the trade and the correlated academic studies in a factory school in order that the boys may become skillful craftsmen, and the balance of the day in the factory on actual commercial work that they may become industrious and efficient workmen. The work of the second-year boys shows a technique and grounding in the theory of correct composition that promises in time an organization for the Lakeside Press that will make for intelligence and efficiency. No greater proof of the worth of this school can be given than the interest shown by the parents in the progress of the boys and their co-operation in maintaining discipline. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Modern Oratory The fifteen orations in this volume are intended to furnish models for students of Oratory, Argumentation, and Debate. For the most part the orations are given without abridgment. In making the selection the aim has been to include only orations that (1) deal with subjects of either contemporary or historical interest, (2) were delivered by men eminent as orators, and (3) are of inherent literary value. There are of course many orators and orations in modern times that fulfill these tests, but it is believed that the orations selected are fairly representative. A further aim has been to secure such variety in the selections as to cover in a single volume the fields of deliberative, forensic, pulpit, and demonstrative oratory, and so to meet the needs of classes both in argumentation and oratorical composition. If we give relatively less attention nowadays to the art side of oratory, - the manner of delivery, - there is all the more need of studying the matter, - the invention, organization, and expression of the thought. The young men in our schools and colleges, who in a small or large way are bound to be called upon to speak in public, should be taught how to compose for a hearer as distinguished from a reader - how to construct an oration as distinguished from an essay. To this end oratorical models should be critically studied in order that the student may learn and appreciate how masters have wielded the language for the purposes of conviction and persuasion. And this should be made an intensive rather than an extensive process. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
