Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 2099, SF. The planet is Ecliptic Earth. The population is approximately two and a half billion, a combination of Humanoids, Androids, and Soligrams. The problem is an egocentric and overriding Oligarchy, a dimwitted Dictatorship, and a damaged Democracy, locked in a fierce and blatantly personal fight to stay afloat in a tumultuous, combative, broken civilization. Welcome to Ecliptic Earth. The Glyph Saga: Book Two, Mad at Truth, is the second installment of this series. The war torn region of Maurasia is at the center of this story. After Randu, Rachale, Que, and Gina made their Great Escape from Panga Uno Animo, they find themselves lost and clueless about life outside the silvery Gates. With the cruel onslaught of a natural winter imminent, they shed their royal guises and hide in a salvage yard on the Old New Engle coast. They manage to make many allies, such as Donny, the jovial Soligram owner of the salvage yard, and Jacob, a half-Android Maurasian war hero. They also meet a powerful little Homo radians girl named Viky, and it seems that the PUA would love to get their hands on her. In the meantime, the PUA replaces their absconders, by recruiting outside the NQLC. The PUA also has yet another Lifeform Warfare scheme, attempting to gain the trust of Guandaland or Maurasia, so they can double-team the remaining region.

Book excerpt: Imagine an Earth where following a series of bizarre nuclear accidents, the landmasses, languages, cultures, and political structures have drastically changed. One third of the population, which consists of Androids, Soligrams, Homo sapiens, and Homo radians, have been blessed (or cursed) with supernatural abilities, thanks to alien intervention. Split into three warring Regions, the tightly-knit World Leaders have closets brimming with skeletons. Welcome to Ecliptic Earth. The Glyph Saga: Book One, A Great Escape, is the first installment of this seven book series. Set in the year 2098 SF, this book centers on the activities in the super region Panga Uno Animo. The PUA is an opulent, yet grueling, oligarchy with a fierce loathing of nature. The time has come for the Elder Dictators to initiate their highly trained children as future Leaders, with a lifelong commitment of unmitigated corruption and terror. However, a few of these Chosen Ones have had their fill of the despotism and autocracy in their dystopian home, and decide to make a break for it using their special superpowers to their advantage. It is up to these deserter offspring, with mysterious assistance from a remnant rebel, to escape the force field-protected gates of pretty oppression and attempt to usher in a new era of world peace and prosperity. Not, of course, without the obstructions of forbidden knowledge, lust, alien invasion, betrayal, loss, rejection, personal growth, and Life Form Warfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young outcast gains remarkable psi-powers from a mysterious crown in this magnificent blend of space opera and epic fantasy quest. Jo Clayton opens wide the portals into an awe-inspiring galaxy of marvels and terrors with her Diadem Saga—an impressive combination of science fiction world-building and quest fantasy storytelling that rivals the classic works of Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton, and C. J. Cherryh—and introduces a “positive, aggressive, and interesting” heroine, the nomad Aleytys (Popular Culture). Within the breathtaking scope of her unique universe, “Clayton has the gift of creating believable aliens and alien worlds, and a lively, vivid, often lyrical style” (Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Review). Diadem from the Stars: Abandoned by her space-traveling mother and forced to flee her superstitious primitive tribe, Aleytys discovers an alien crown of unimaginable power. Once the diadem’s great energy is transferred to her, it becomes an integral part of who she is and will be. But the diadem is stolen property, taken from a vengeful arachnid race—and Aleytys just became the most wanted woman in a dangerous universe. Lamarchos: On the barbarous planet Lamarchos, Aleytys is determined to do what it takes to survive and protect her infant son, even stealing a cache of powerful poaku stones. But despite the awesome power of the diadem, Aleytys falls victim to a treacherous betrayal and is pursued by a horde of zombie-like aliens. Irsud: Drugged and sold into slavery by the villain who stole her infant son, Aleytys must now serve as the hive queen of an alien insect/humanoid race on the planet Irsud, acting as a host body for the queen’s consciousness in a surgically implanted egg. With an enemy literally inside her, Aleytys must tap the power of the diadem to survive the ordeal and rescue her son.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to reconstruct a philosophical context for the Hieroglyphica of Horapollo, a late 5th century Greek study of hieroglyphic writing. In addition to reviewing and drawing on earlier approaches it explores the range of signs and meanings for which Horapollo is interested in giving explanations, whether there are characteristic types of explanations given, what conception of language in general and of hieroglyphic Egyptian in particular the explanations of the meanings of the glyphs presuppose, and what explicit indications there are of having been informed or influenced by philosophical theories of meaning, signs, and interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breaking of the Maya code has completely changed our knowledge of this ancient civilization, and has revealed the Maya people's long and vivid history. Decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing has progressed to the point where most Maya written texts—whether inscribed on monuments, written in the codices, or painted or incised on ceramics—can now be read with confidence. In this practical guide, first published in 2001, Michael D. Coe, the noted Mayanist, and Mark Van Stone, an accomplished calligrapher, have made the difficult, often mysterious script accessible to the nonspecialist. They decipher real Maya texts, and the transcriptions include a picture of the glyph, the pronunciation, the Maya words in Roman type, and the translation into English. For the second edition, the authors have taken the latest research and breakthroughs into account, adding glyphs, updating captions, and reinterpreting or expanding upon earlier decipherments. After an introductory discussion of Maya culture and history and the nature of the Maya script, the authors introduce the glyphs in a series of chapters that elaborate on topics such as the intricate calendar, warfare, royal lives and rituals, politics, dynastic names, ceramics, relationships, and the supernatural world. The book includes illustrations of historic texts, a syllabary, a lexicon, and translation exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeoastronomy and the Maya illustrates archaeoastronomical approaches to ancient Mayan cultural production. The book is contextualized through a history of archaeoastronomical investigations into Mayan sites, originating in the 19th century discovery of astronomical tables within hieroglyphic books. Early 20th century archaeological excavations revealed inscriptions carved into stone that also preserved astronomical records, along with architecture that was built to reflect astronomical orientations. These materials provided the basis of a growing professionalized archaeoastronomy, blossoming in the 1970s and expanding into recent years. The chapters here exemplify the advances made in the field during the early 21st century as well as the on-going diversity of approaches, presenting new perspectives and discoveries in ancient Mayan astronomy that result from recent studies of architectural alignments, codices, epigraphy, iconography, ethnography, and calendrics. More than just investigations of esoteric ancient sciences, studies of ancient Mayan astronomy have profoundly aided our understanding of Mayan worldviews. Concepts of time and space, meanings encoded in religious art, intentions underlying architectural alignments, and even methods of political legitimization are all illuminated through the study of Mayan astronomy.
