Book excerpt: Novel "The Giant" is a satirical tale about a leader and his followers, people who blindly follow him for their own positions. The main character is the Committee Secretary in a small town. Thanks to his sycophantic behavior, the reader encounters numerous hilarious scenes in the novel. The Committee Secretary wants to give the leader's name to all kindergartens, schools, and other institutions. Of course, the leader deserves to have even the main street in the city named after him, but there are no streets long enough, so neighboring villages are annexed to the city. Many buildings are demolished to make way for this street. He wants to erect a huge monument to the living leader in the center of the city, so he orders the demolition of museum buildings and other cultural and historical sites. When the sculptor finished the monument, news arrived that the leader's hand had been amputated, causing panic. The sculptor found a solution, he also amputated the hand of the monument. They invited the leader to unveil the monument himself. That's when they saw that he had been fitted with an artificial hand. They wanted to return the hand to the monument, but it ended up in the trash and was swept away by the river in a big flood. When they realized they couldn't add a hand to the monument, they decided to bury it. The burial took place at night, in secret. Representatives of the city authorities believed that the leader's monument could not be buried without appropriate speeches and a funeral march, so the burial turned into a real comedy. These are just the most striking scenes from the novel.

Book excerpt: Waupee, or the White Hawk, lived in a remote part of the forest, where animals abounded. Every day he returned from the chase with a large spoil, for he was one of the most skillful and lucky hunters of his tribe. His form was like the cedar; the fire of youth beamed from his eye; there was no forest too gloomy for him to penetrate, and no track made by bird or beast of any kind which he could not readily follow. One day he had gone beyond any point which he had ever before visited. He traveled through an open wood, which enabled him to see a great distance. At length he beheld a light breaking through the foliage of the distant trees, which made him sure that he was on the borders of a prairie. It was a wide plain, covered with long blue grass, and enameled with flowers of a thousand lovely tints. After walking for some time without a path, musing upon the open country, and enjoying the fragrant breeze, he suddenly came to a ring worn among the grass and the flowers, as if it had been made by footsteps moving lightly round and round. But it was strange—so strange as to cause the White Hawk to pause and gaze long and fixedly upon the ground—there was no path which led to this flowery circle. There was not even a crushed leaf nor a broken twig, nor the least trace of a footstep, approaching or retiring, to be found. He thought he would hide himself and lie in wait to discover, if he could, what this strange circle meant.

Book excerpt: The Ender Saga continues with Shadow of the Giant, which parallels the events of Ender's Game from a different character’s point of view. Bean's past was a battle just to survive. He first appeared on the streets of Rotterdam, a tiny child with a mind leagues beyond anyone else. He knew he could not survive through strength; he used his tactical genius to gain acceptance into a children's gang, and then to help make that gang a template for success for all the others. He civilized them, and lived to grow older. Then he was discovered by the recruiters for the Battle School. For Earth was at war - a terrible war with an inscrutable alien enemy. A war that humanity was near to losing. But the long distances of interstellar space has given hope to the defenders of Earth - they had time to train military geniuses up from childhood, forging them into an irresistible force in the high-orbital facility called the Battle School. That story is told in two books, Orson Scott Card's beloved classic Ender's Game, and its parallel, Ender's Shadow. Now, in Shadow of the Giant, Bean's story continues. Bean was the smallest student at the Battle School, but he became Ender Wiggins' right hand, Since then he has grown to be a power on Earth. He served the Hegemon as strategist and general in the terrible wars that followed Ender's defeat of the alien empire attacking Earth. Now he and his wife Petra yearn for a safe place to build a family - something he has never known - but there is nowhere on Earth that does not harbor his enemies - old enemies from the days in Ender's Jeesh, new enemies from the wars on Earth. To find security, Bean and Petra must once again follow in Ender's footsteps. They must leave Earth behind, in the control of the Hegemon, and look to the stars. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian fairy tales presented in this work were selected from stories collected by Mr. Henry R. Schoolcraft, the first man to explore how the Indians lived and discover their legends. He lived with the Indians in the West and near the Great Lakes for over thirty years during the beginning of the Nineteenth Century and wrote numerous books about them. When the storytellers gathered at the lodge fires in the evenings to tell the tales that were retold to many generations of red children, Mr. Schoolcraft listened carefully and wrote the stories down. This is a collection of enchanting tales that tell of the spirits and their magic, how the little boy snared the sun, the old Toad Woman who stole the baby, and many more incredible events. The stories are written in a captivating language and deliver a valuable moral in the end. It also contains colorful illustrations that add to the book's charm.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to and overview of the life and philosophy of Ernst Bloch. Bloch has had a strange fate in the English-speaking world. He wrote his famous three-volume opus, The Principle of Hope, while living in exile in the United States from 1938 to 1940. It was first published, however, in East Germany in the 1950s after he had returned to Europe and became a professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig. Gradually, his other numerous works became better known and widespread in Europe and scholars in the US and UK started to take note of his works. Yet, he has still remained a somewhat neglected figure in the humanities. While this book does not set out to entirely rectify this neglect, it does offer readers an introduction to Bloch’s works and the opportunity to understand more about the importance of utopian thought. Through an exploration of some of Bloch’s more controversial communist leanings and relationship to the Soviet Union, a study of Bloch’s utopian quest, and even a comparison with J. R. R. Tolkien, this comprehensive study demonstrates just how interesting a figure Ernst Bloch really was, and how his philosophy of hope has laid the basis for secular humanism.
