Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Army in War I have endeavoured to make the book a collection of facts, with only so much discussion of them as is necessary to make them clear to the reader, avoiding as far as possible any attempt at criticism. But the mere statement of these facts is enough to Show that the German army is a very formidable fighting organisation. And I think it is well that this should be understood. It is a mistake to underrate an Opponent. The Germans made this mistake with regard to our own gallant army. Some writers here at home appear to me to have been as much at fault in their estimates of the German army at the outset of the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In France With the Germans, Vol. 1 of 2 I followed the victorious German army from the commencement of the war, as special correspondent Of the New Free Press of Vienna, and of some English and American papers. Though many of us saw the same battle-fields, sieges, head-quarters, and camps, each saw different scenes, and saw them through differently-coloured glasses. I there fore think I may venture to publish what I saw, and hope that my simple and unpre tending narrative will assist the reader to form his judgment upon the wonderful war, whose progress he watched from afar. They are an examination of and reply to the appeals of the German propagandists to American sympathy, and give what the writer believes is the American view of certain incidents that have shocked the world, and of the German policies pursued in justifying and carrying on the present war. It is also believed they present the fundamental reason why Americans refuse their sympathy to Germany. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At Gerbeviller, in the Department of the meurthe-ci-mo selle, on the 24th August, about 60 french chassews c'i pied, after heroically withstanding the attack of the German troops retired. The Germans rushed into the town, pillaged, burn ed and massacred. More than 100 people disappeared from Gerbeviller during the day. At least 50 were massacred. Fifteen bodies found with their hands tied behind their backs were buried by their fellow citizens at a place called La Prele which had been chosen by the Germans as an execu tion ground. Other victims were killed in the houses and in the streets. The soldiers entered the house inhabited by the Liugen held family, led away the son, aged 36, and shot him. They returned later, took the father, aged 70, to La Prele, and shot him there. The mother as she was escaping saw the body of her son stretched out on the ground, still moving. Some soldiers drenched the dying man with petrol and set fire to him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nation in Arms: A Treatise on Modern Military Systems and the Conduct of War Government bulletins and Official histories. So, too, in his detailed study of the problems of supplying an army in the field with food and ammunition and replacing casualties, he shows us how the difficulties of carrying on a campaign increase with every forward step and with every month that the war lasts. These are points that one must understand if one is to form any accurate judgment of the course Of the present war. One realises that severe as is the strain of battle, the task of maintaining an army in existence is even more trying for those who have to conduct the wars of a nation in arms. General Von der Goltz writes as a patriotic German, but there is in his works a complete absence of the Jingo element to be found in some Of the younger writers of the German army. He argues that universal service is the necessary price that a great Continental nation must pay to secure its safety, but he never expresses the strange Opinion that war is something to be sought for its own sake. To his mind it is rather a trying experience that will come from time to time in the life of a nation, and for which the most complete preparation must be made. Whether or not Serbia was seriously in the wrong is a matter of opinion, but it is generally held that Austria dealt with her neighbour with too much heat and too little discretion. Austria kindled the flames of war, but it was Germany's mission to seize a blazing torch and set Europe alight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Four Days on a Troopship Then she screamed, and the pity of it is, I probably shall never know what she wanted, for we were leaving Genoa very, very slowly, as two tugs pulled us away from the docks. For three weeks I have waited for this boat to sail. Now. We have actually put out to sea. There were many with red eyes, swollen from tears, among the passengers; though why anybody in the world should ever weep when they are bound for New York is beyond me. About the first thing you do when you get on the boat is to size up the cabin in which you must sojourn for days to come. My impression is that I am getting less for more money than upon any other journey I have ever made, but I shall be alone. That is some compensation. It was common gossip just before we came on board that today the Germans will or will not sign Peace. The general impres sion is that they will refuse. I have just made a wager with a Swiss that they will sign. If I win I'll have my incidental ex penses paid for a long, hot trip. This Swiss tells me that there are thou sands of Germans in his country and none of them ever admit that their army was defeated. Everywhere I have gone, I have heard that same thing. Most everyone with whom you come in contact seems to think the war was ended just about a month too soon. Personally, I take no stock in such ex pressions. If there are any readers of this book who think that the German army was not decisively defeated in battle, beaten to a dead standstill and then flung irrevocably back, they are welcome to their delusions. The same with the Germans, too. In a gen cration or so the truth will begin to dawn upon them, if not sooner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of a German Soldier, 1926 A very few pages of these war memoirs will convince the reader that their author held an important position in the German army. Al though Sergeant C only bore the chev rons of a non-commissioned officer, he was, nevertheless, virtually an officer in everything but name. His duties, as sometimes also hap pens in the French army, were akin to those of an officer. He played an important part on the so-called staff of his battalion. In turn, he was secretary, interpreter, and liaison of ficer. He frequently performed missions of trust and often carried confidential dispatches. Besides, he enjoyed all the prestige which the German army attaches to the rank of Ein jahrig-freiwillige. 1 He dined with his su perior officers and, when not on duty, mingled with them on an equal footing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Spirit of Germany This backwardness in political thought and action constitutes one of the tragedies of the history of Germany. 'in political development Germany is where England stood in the days of Elizabeth. Un der Elizabeth, Parliament played but a small part in the life of the nation. True, it met, though sometimes only at intervals of several years, and it had control of the purse and of the making of new laws. But it voted revenues that the sovereign retained through life without further appeal to Parliament, and, since the sovereign usually thought there were already laws enough and desired little change, no new ones were passed for many years at a time. For the rest, the sovereign and the circle surrounding her controlled and spent the revenue; she named whom she would to office, kept up the army and navy, and resisted any attempt by the representatives of the nation to interfere in these things. W'ith slight differences the German Emperor does the same thing to-day. The German people have no more control over the government of Germany than the English people had over that of England in the long distant days before the struggle with Charles I to secure what Elizabeth had always refused to yield. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Headquarters Nights: A Record of Conversations and Experiences at the Headquarters of the German Army in France and Belgium One of the most graphic pictures of the German attitude, the attitude which has rendered this war inevitable, is contained in Vernon Kellogg's Headquarters Nights.' It is a convincing, and an evidently truthful, exposition of the shocking, the unspeakably dreadful moral and intellectual perversion of character which makes Germany at present a menace to the whole civilized world. The man who reads Kellogg's sketch and yet fails to see why we are at war, and why we must accept no peace save that of over whelming victory, is neither a good American nor a true lover of mankind. An indispensable reference work for Second World War scholars and enthusiasts, German Ground Forces of World War II captures the continuously changing character of Nazi ground forces throughout the conflict. For the first time, readers can follow the career of every German division, corps, army, and army group as the German armed forces shifted units to and from theaters of war. Organized by sections including Theater Commands, Army Groups, Armies, and Corps Commands, it presents a detailed analysis of each corresponding order of battle for every German field formation above division. This innovative resource also describes the orders of battle of the myriad German and Axis satellite formations assigned to security commands throughout occupied Europe and the combat zones, as well as those attached to fortress commands and to the commanders of German occupation forces across Europe. An accompanying narrative describes the career of each field formation and includes the background and experience of many of their most famous commanding officers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelson's History of the War, Vol. 23: The Dawn The first problem was, therefore, to get a superior mobility 111 the attack, and to bring in the element of surprise. This the Germans achieved at St. Quentin by the use of storm battalions and the method of infiltration. Their plan was bettered by F och by the use of his light tanks. There was now no need for a prolonged artillery bombardment the tanks were sufficient to sweep a path for the infantry. There was less need also for elaborate preparations before the battle, and consequently an attack could be rapidly designed for any area where the prospects seemed favourable. It was precisely this consequence of the new system of war which the German Staff did not grasp. They allowed an action which was based essentially on surprise to drift into a stationary battle. They permitted their army to become accroche', alike on the Somme, on the Lys, and on the Marne and, therefore, sooner or later they Were faced by Allied reserves and brought to a standstill. Their method could only hate suc-r ceeded had there been no such reserves - a point on which Ludendorfi was in singular error.
