Book excerpt: This book studies a category of mathematical objects called Hamiltonians, which are dependent on both time and momenta. The authors address the development of the distinguished geometrization on dual 1-jet spaces for time-dependent Hamiltonians, in contrast with the time-independent variant on cotangent bundles. Two parts are presented to include both geometrical theory and the applicative models: Part One: Time-dependent Hamilton Geometry and Part Two: Applications to Dynamical Systems, Economy and Theoretical Physics. The authors present 1-jet spaces and their duals as appropriate fundamental ambient mathematical spaces used to model classical and quantum field theories. In addition, the authors present dual jet Hamilton geometry as a distinct metrical approach to various interdisciplinary problems.

Book excerpt: Develops the theory of jet single-time Lagrange geometry and presents modern-day applications Jet Single-Time Lagrange Geometry and Its Applications guides readers through the advantages of jet single-time Lagrange geometry for geometrical modeling. With comprehensive chapters that outline topics ranging in complexity from basic to advanced, the book explores current and emerging applications across a broad range of fields, including mathematics, theoretical and atmospheric physics, economics, and theoretical biology. The authors begin by presenting basic theoretical concepts that serve as the foundation for understanding how and why the discussed theory works. Subusequent chapters compare the geometrical and physical aspects of jet relativistic time-dependent Lagrange geometry to the classical time-dependent Lagrange geometry. A collection of jet geometrical objects are also examined such as d-tensors, relativistic time-dependent semisprays, harmonic curves, and nonlinear connections. Numerous applications, including the gravitational theory developed by both the Berwald-Moór metric and the Chernov metric, are also presented. Throughout the book, the authors offer numerous examples that illustrate how the theory is put into practice, and they also present numerous applications in which the solutions of first-order ordinary differential equation systems are regarded as harmonic curves on 1-jet spaces. In addition, numerous opportunities are provided for readers to gain skill in applying jet single-time Lagrange geometry to solve a wide range of problems. Extensively classroom-tested to ensure an accessible presentation, Jet Single-Time Lagrange Geometry and Its Applications is an excellent book for courses on differential geometry, relativity theory, and mathematical models at the graduate level. The book also serves as an excellent reference for researchers, professionals, and academics in physics, biology, mathematics, and economics who would like to learn more about model-providing geometric structures.

Book excerpt: This book offers an explicitly covariant canonical formalism that is devised in the usual mathematical language of standard textbooks on classical dynamics. It elaborates on important questions: How do we convert the entire canonical formalism of Lagrange and Hamilton that are built upon Newton's concept of an absolute time into a relativistically correct form that is appropriate to our present knowledge? How do we treat the space-time variables in a Hamiltonian Field Theory on equal footing as in the Lagrangian description of field theory without introducing a new mathematical language? How can a closed covariant canonical gauge theory be obtained from it? To answer the last question, the theory of homogenous and inhomogeneous gauge transformations is worked out in this book on the basis of the canonical transformation theory for fields elaborated before. In analogy to the treatment of time in relativistic point mechanics, the canonical formalism in field theory is further extended to a space-time that is no longer fixed but is also treated as a canonical variable. Applied to a generalized theory of gauge transformations, this opens the door to a new approach to general relativity.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a presentation of the geometrical theory of Lagrange and Hamilton spaces of order k, greater or equal to 1, as well as to define and investigate some new Analytical Mechanics. It is shown that a rigorous geometrical theory of conservative and non-conservative mechanical systems can be raised based on the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian geometries. And that these geometries relies on the mechanical principles. The book covers the following topics: Lagrange and Hamilton spaces; Lagrange and Hamilton spaces of higher order; Analytical Mechanics of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanical systems. The novelty consists of the following: a geometrization of the classical non-conservative mechanical systems, whose external forces depend on velocities, the notion of Finslerian mechanical system, the definition of Cartan mechanical system, a theory of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanical systems by means of the geometry of tangent (cotangent) bundle, the geometrization of the higher order Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanical systems, fundamental equations of Riemannian mechanical systems whose external forces depend on higher order accelerations.

Book excerpt: This book incorporates 3 modern aspects of mathematical physics: the jet methods in differential geometry, Lagrangian formalism on jet manifolds and the multimomentum approach to Hamiltonian formalism. Several contemporary field models are investigated in detail. This is not a book on differential geometry. However, modern concepts of differential geometry such as jet manifolds and connections are used throughout the book. Quadratic Lagrangians and Hamiltonians are studied at the general level including a treatment of Hamiltonian formalism on composite fiber manifolds. The book presents new geometric methods and results in field theory.

The author links control theory with a geometric view of classical mechanics in both its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations, and in particular with the theory of mechanical systems subject to motion constraints. The synthesis is appropriate as there is a rich connection between mechanics and nonlinear control theory. The book provides a unified treatment of nonlinear control theory and constrained mechanical systems that incorporates material not available in other recent texts. The book benefits graduate students and researchers in the area who want to enhance their understanding and enhance their techniques.

Book excerpt: This short primer, geared towards students with a strong interest in mathematically rigorous approaches, introduces the essentials of classical physics, briefly points out its place in the history of physics and its relation to modern physics, and explains what benefits can be gained from a mathematical perspective. As a starting point, Newtonian mechanics is introduced and its limitations are discussed. This leads to and motivates the study of different formulations of classical mechanics, such as Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, which are the subjects of later chapters. In the second part, a chapter on classical field theories introduces more advanced material. Numerous exercises are collected in the appendix.
