Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentle Reader When Don Quixote was descanting on the beauty of the peerless Dulcinea, the Duchess interrupted him by expressing a doubt as to that lady's existence. "Much may be said on that point," said Don Quixote. "God only knows whether there be any Dulcinea or not in the world. These are things the proof of which must not be pushed to extreme lengths." But this admission does not in the least interfere with the habitual current of his thoughts, or cool the ardor of his loyalty. He proceeds after the momentary digression as if nothing had happened. He said it looked so hard; her caps were all strictish, but her Sunday cap was savage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentle Heart: A Second Series of Talking to the Children The other day a friend brought me a song which was sung in Italy six hundred years ago. He Called it The Song of the Gentle Heart. It is a song in praise of gentleness in the life, and of gentle deeds and words and thoughts. And what the song says is, that all gentleness has its home in the heart; and that unless there be gentleness in the heart there can be none in the life. At the time this song was sung, there were many who thought that gentleness could only be found in palaces and castles, and among the people who dress in splendid Clothes. But the song says that it may also be found in the most humble cot tages, and among people whose hands are rough with daily toil. It is the gentle heart which makes people gentle. Whether a home be rich or poor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We find the Gentle Reader everywhere, and to him and to her I address this volume on the art of upbuilding and of keeping fair and sweet the pleasant home. For a pleasant home is a necessity to us. And let it be ever so plain or ever so elegant, it is not home unless it ministers to what is best in our nature and gives scope to our energies, a reason for our ambitions, a place for our children to grow in, and a haven for us from the storm and the tempest. Book excerpt: The number and popularity of novels that have overtly reconfigured aspects of classic American texts suggests a curious trend for both readers and writers, an impulse to retell and reread books that have come to define American culture. This book argues that by revising canonical American literature, contemporary American writers are (re)writing an American myth of origins, creating one that corresponds to the contemporary writer’s understanding of self and society. Informed by cognitive psychology, evolutionary literary criticism, and poststructuralism, Entzminger reads texts by canonical authors Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Alcott, Twain, Chopin, and Faulkner, and by the contemporary writers that respond to them. In highlighting the construction and cognitive function of narrative in their own and in their antecedent texts, contemporary writers highlight the fact that such use of narrative is universal and essential to human beings. This book suggests that by revising the classic texts that compose our cultural narrative, contemporary writers mirror the way human individuals consistently revisit and refigure the past through language, via self-narration, in order to manage and understand experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Valentine and His Brother This was preliminary to the story which old Lady Eskside had begun to tell when I opened to you, gentle reader, the door of this great dim room. She was deep in it by the time we shadows entered, among the shadows, to listen. And most of us can figure to ourselves what a mother would be likely to say of her only child - the child not of her youth even, which puts a kind of equality between mother and son, and brings them together, as it were, upon one table land of life, sooner or later - but the child of her mature age, and therefore always a child to her. What she said of him I need not repeat. The reader will make acquaintance with the man for himself, a different creature from the man as seen through his mother's eyes. It is of the style known as Chippendale armorial as determined by the shape and ornamentation of the shield and of the tablet on which the name is engraved. The shield and crest display the arms of the Washington family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies in Prose and Verse Gentle reader (readers are always gentle), should you read this preface before reading the whole or a part of the contents of this book, it may give you some idea what you may expect. I, the writer, have principally touched upon scenes, objects, and subjects belonging this sublunary world, holding the conservative notion that it is best for a man to keep within his own sphere. I have ventured in one lofty flight to touch on those luminaries, the sun, moon, and stars, but not so as to affect their evolutionary motions, or throw any new light on them. The deepest subject that I have tried to fathom is coal, a subject that might give much light if properly handled, though some consider it a miner question that may be easily settled. As I have not been a student in any department of science or learning, I do not presume to teach, therefore there will be found in this volume little that is instructive. To some.
