Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of recent advances in our understanding of the genesis of diamonds and the associated phases. It is divided into three main parts, starting with an introduction to the analysis of diamond inclusions to infer the formation processes. In turn, the second part of the book presents high-pressure experimental studies in mantle diamond-parental mineral systems with representative multicomponent boundary compositions. The experimental syngenesis phase diagrams provided reveal the physicochemical mechanisms of diamond nucleation and substantiate the mantle-carbonatite concept of the genesis of diamonds and associated phases. Lastly, the book describes the genetic classification of diamond-hosted mineral inclusions and experimentally determined RE “mineral-parental melt” partition coefficients. The physicochemical experimental evidence presented shows the driving forces behind the fractional evolution of the mantle magmas and diamond-parental melts. Given the depth and breadth of its coverage, the book offers researchers essential new insights into the ways diamonds and associated minerals and rocks are naturally created.

Never in a million years would they have imagined that this perfectly planned heist would be the very thing that put their lifelong friendships to the test."

Book excerpt: Diamond is the record-setter in many mineralogical properties such as hardness, diffusivity, thermal conductivity, purity, and covalency of bonding. Similarly, diamond, as the premier gemstone of the mantle holds primacy for geological features such as age and depth of origin. Diamond was among the first crystalline structures to be solved by X-ray diffraction and the first materials measured for their Raman spectrum. At more than 80 billion USD in yearly commercial value, diamond sets the record for the most traded, valuable mineral on the planet. Despite its chemical simplicity, diamond has been the object of more research effort, and had more scientific and popular press pages written about it, than any other mineral.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Notes on the Genesis and Matrix of the Diamond Several months elapsed, owing to various circum stances, before Mrs. Lewis could place the late Professor's manuscripts and the other materials in my hands. In the interval Sir J. B. Stone, m.p., when I was a guest at Erdington Grange, his pleasant home near Sutton Cold. Field, showed me a collection of specimens which he had obtained during a recent visit to the Kimberley mines. Among these were two lumps of the diamond-bearing rock, each as large as three or four ordinary cabinet specimens, and in a much better state of preservation than any which I had previously seen. One of these he kindly gave to me, asking me to examine its structure, and allowing me to make use of the other materials in his possession. Some microscopic sections were prepared from this specimen, and, in addition to others already in my collection, the gift of Professor Boyd Dawkins, I had the advantage of studying one or two small but well-preserved pieces of the rock, which had been presented to Miss C. A. Raisin by C. J. Alford, Esq., as well as others kindly-lent to me by the late Professor A. H. Green.' The results of these studies were published in the Geological for 1895 (pp. 492 - 502) in a paper jointly written by Sir J. B. Stone, Miss C. A. Raisin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA's Genesis mission, launched on August 8, 2001 is the fifth mission in the Discovery series. Genesis addresses questions about the materials and processes involved in the origin of the solar system by providing precise knowledge of solar isotopic and elemental compositions for comparison with the compositions of meteoritic and planetary materials. This book describes the Genesis mission, the solar wind collector materials, the solar wind concentrator and simulations of its performance, the plasma ion and electron instruments, and the way these two instruments are used to determine the solar wind flow regime on board the spacecraft. The book is of interest to all potential users of the data returned by the Genesis mission, to those studying the isotopic and chemical composition of the early solar system whose work will be influenced by the measurements made by Genesis and by all those interested in the design and implementation of space instruments to study space plasmas.

Book excerpt: Ballparks are repositories of family memory, unique places that link generations. Until now, no single volume has focused on the historical development of these special spaces, from the crossroads of neighboring cornfields to the intersections of state highways. In Diamonds, Michael Gershman carefully traces the often curious genesis of these cultural landmarks that mirror, in many respects, the evolution of our urban landscape. All the great parks - Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Sportsman's Park, Ebbets Field, Shibe Park, Crosley Field, the Polo Grounds, Comiskey Park, Forbes Field, Tiger Stadium - and lesser-known gems - Baker Bowl, South End Grounds, Palace of the Fans, and Hilltop Park - are celebrated with a rich blend of meticulously researched history, illuminating anecdotes, rare photographs, and evocative illustrations. Diamonds also tells the story of more modern baseball palaces - Candlestick Park, the Astrodome, and Camden Yards - and describes parks that were proposed but ne
