Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. ADDENDA. PART I. AUTHOR'S INTRODUCTION. Since the making of this little book interest has steadily increased in the subject of the paternal origin of Abraham Lincoln, and the public faith has as steadily waxed in the theory upheld by this narrative. The book has passed through two editions; the last is now exhausted and the third, containing additional, vital evidence, is this you hold in your hand. Every statement of fact in this volume is the solemn statement of persons--intelligent admirers of Mr. Lincoln--the equal of the most conservative, trustworthy and patriotic in the country. The first two editions have circulated in every State in the Union; have gone to Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland and India. The author has received letters by the hundred from representative citizens manifesting much interest in the facts thus made public for the first time. Not a few of these letters are from gentlemen familiar with the time and men contemporaneous with Mr. Lincoln, some of whom knew Mr. Lincoln personally. Distinguished scholars, divines, statesmen and publicists of all sections have evinced previous knowledge of the existence of a foundation for this record, and attach unmistakable credence thereto. Truth is, historic record and the public voice this narrative has elicited, unite in showing that the public have been incredulous of the chapter on the paternal origin of Abraham Lincoln as written by his popular biographers. No biography is complete, no biography is faithful that has not an open, ringing announcement of the parentage of the subject. Mr. Lincoln's biographers may be divided into two groups touching his parentage: The first, those about whom the light had shone and whose sense of honor and professional...

Book Synopsis Lincoln Legends by : Edward SteersJr.
Download or read book Lincoln Legends written by Edward SteersJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-10-12 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the more than 140 years since his death, Abraham Lincoln has become America's most revered president. The mythmaking about this self-made man began early, some of it starting during his campaign for the presidency in 1860. As an American icon, Lincoln has been the subject of speculation and inquiry as authors and researchers have examined every aspect—personal and professional—of the president's life. In Lincoln Legends, noted historian and Lincoln expert Edward Steers Jr. carefully scrutinizes some of the most notorious tall tales and distorted ideas about America's sixteenth president. These inaccuracies and speculations about Lincoln's personal and professional life abound. Did he write his greatest speech on the back of an envelope on the way to Gettysburg? Did Lincoln appear before a congressional committee to defend his wife against charges of treason? Was he an illegitimate child? Did Lincoln have romantic encounters with women other than his wife? Did he have love affairs with men? What really happened in the weeks leading up to April 14, 1865, and in the aftermath of Lincoln's tragic assassination? Lincoln Legends evaluates the evidence on all sides of the many heated debates about the Great Emancipator. Not only does Steers weigh the merits of all relevant arguments and interpretations, but he also traces the often fascinating evolution of flawed theories about Lincoln and uncovers the motivations of the individuals—occasionally sincere but more often cynical, self-serving, and nefarious—who are responsible for their dispersal. Based on extensive primary research, the conclusions in Lincoln Legends will settle many of the enduring questions and persistent myths about Lincoln's life once and for all. Steers leaves us with a clearer image of Abraham Lincoln as a man, as an exceptionally effective president, and as a deserving recipient of the nation's admiration.
Download or read book Terra Incognita written by Anne Bridges and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terra Incognita is the most comprehensive bibliography of sources related to the Great Smoky Mountains ever created. Compiled and edited by three librarians, this authoritative and meticulously researched work is an indispensable reference for scholars and students studying any aspect of the region’s past. Starting with the de Soto map of 1544, the earliest document that purports to describe anything about the Great Smoky Mountains, and continuing through 1934 with the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park—today the most visited national park in the United States—this volume catalogs books, periodical and journal articles, selected newspaper reports, government publications, dissertations, and theses published during that period. This bibliography treats the Great Smoky Mountain Region in western North Carolina and east Tennessee systematically and extensively in its full historic and social context. Prefatory material includes a timeline of the Great Smoky Mountains and a list of suggested readings on the era covered. The book is divided into thirteen thematic chapters, each featuring an introductory essay that discusses the nature and value of the materials in that section. Following each overview is an annotated bibliography that includes full citation information and a bibliographic description of each entry. Chapters cover the history of the area; the Cherokee in the Great Smoky Mountains; the national forest movement and the formation of the national park; life in the locality; Horace Kephart, perhaps the most important chronicler to document the mountains and their inhabitants; natural resources; early travel; music; literature; early exploration and science; maps; and recreation and tourism. Sure to become a standard resource on this rich and vital region, Terra Incognita is an essential acquisition for all academic and public libraries and a boundless resource for researchers and students of the region.
