Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gem, 1903 True this history extends only over the brief space oi four years and has gathered but. A few words from the lips of those represented therein. Yet an effort has been made to select such as will most nearly represent the facts. Deeds and strenuous actions with which these four years have been filled. We believe you can gather from these few pages the noble aims which characterize our students, and as the student is. So is the man. We believe you can see the pure purposes of those represented in this volume without reading between the lines. But should you do so, you will only be able to add greater lustre to the just praises given. Many events have taken place since the publication of the Gem of 1901. Some of them bright and pleasant to think upon, others which turn our thoughts in a more quiet and thoughtful channel. Since then, our beloved President has left us. And is now' sleeping upon the campus of the college he loved so well. The flowers of spring bedeck his grave. The heat of summer caresses it. The melancholy winds of autumn cover it with forest leaves. And winter throws a cover of white snow in loving remembrance of his pure life. He received his early education in the public schools of Ripley County, and began teaching when sixteen years of age. He worked his way through Moores Hill College, graduating in 1883 with the degree of a.b., and was elected to the chair of German and Mathematics the same year. In 1886 he took his Master's degree. He entered Garrett Biblical Institute in 1890 and, while taking his course there, taught Freshman mathematics in Northwestern University, and took post graduate work in mathematics in the same institution. He 'took two summers in Chicago University and graduated from Garrett in the class of 1903. In 1908 the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him by both his Alma Mater and Taylor University. With the exception of five years spent in the active pastorate, he has spent his life in college work, where he has been able. To build into the lives and character of hundreds of young men and women the principles and christian faith of which he has been the exponent. His interest in the young people made him throw himself into the Epworth League, which he helped. To establish throughout the Indiana Conference, and of which he served as District president for thirteen years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gem, 1901 Many events of importance to the University mark the period that has intervened since the publication of the '98 Gem. The increased attendance at the colleges and universities of this country during the past two years, ac counted for, no doubt, by the fact that the desire for an advanced education has been stimulated during the closing years of the nineteenth century by the increasing zeal and earnestness manifested in scientific research and the general advance observed in all institutions of learning, has nowhere been more manifest than in Taylor University. New theories have been-advanced, new methods have been put in operation, and many errors deeply buried un der the obsolete investigations of the past have been disclosed. The best methods of teaching - not only giving abundance of facts, but also stimulat ing the desire for personal research - have been adopted. While Taylor has kept to the front in educational lines, yet the knowledge that an educated intellect alone is detrimental to the possessor and the world in general, un less backed by a character worthy of emulation, has been so'riveted upon the minds and hearts of the management of the University, that equal attention is given to the development of the higher, the spiritual nature of her stu dents. As trees are to be judged by their fruits, so colleges must be judged, not by their buildings and equipment, but by the men and women who go out from under the fostering care of their Alma Mater. While the University has made rapid progress along educational lines, many new improvements have been made in the buildings. The first floor of maria-wright Hall, has been finished, furnishing commodius quarters for our Business Department. The Library, which, until recently, occupied a room on the north side of the building, now occupies the old chapel, and chapel services are now conducted in the large and spacious hall which has been completed and furnished by the kindness of friends. A Ladies' Dormi tory and Dining Hall have been added to the number of buildings, and on the lots surrounding the campus many new buildings and residences have been erected for the accommodation of the teachers and students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guilelmensian, 1903, Vol. 46 Any estimate of such an administration must be defective. By far the greater part is unseen and unknown. Private interviews, private corres pondence, personal influence quietly exerted and even influence uncon sciously exerted, effect more than comes to public knowledge and more than is achieved by public methods. Accidents and collisions attract notice, but little notice is taken, and no records kept, of accidents avoided and collisions prevented. A college must unite trustees, faculty, alumni, students, and parents of students. As it would be a miracle if all these elements were in spontaneous agreement, the president must provide the universal solvent. He must collect the currents from the various batteries and combine them in one motor. His methods and policy are exposed to criticism in which he is judged as an executive, though he has small freedom of action compared with a business manager or a mili tary leader. He must give liberty and independence to his faculty to get the highest results, yet he must keep sufficient control to secure effective teaching and adequate uniformity. He is the source of discipline and yet would keep the good will of the students. He is expected to maintain a high standard of scholarship without turning away too many delinquents. In addition to all this he is assigned the task of raising money. The very qualities which fit him for his other duties are likely to make this task extremely distasteful, for it is not often that a man of scholarly culture possesses also the peculiar talents of the promoter, and if he does, his training, away from business and money making, robs him of pleasure in their exercise. Such are the conditions and such the problems of the office. One need not be an administrator to see the difficulties, but only a practical administrator can appreciate them to the full. And the Muse said Beware of him; for he also is in league with the creature that hath horns and hoofs. And once again the Muse did take me to another far-off country, and there we saw Mortimer Hungry. But of him she said: Write not; for I have set a great seal upon his life. And hence we went to a great house where the people do laugh and weep and gnash their teeth, because their minds are not; and behold, there were Jerman and Francis. Francis had a broken harp and did sing sad words about death, and Jerman did roll upon the ground and laugh, as if the' poet were making merry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Pennyfeather is a second-year theology student who, as a result of mistaken identity, has his “education discontinued for personal reasons.” He ends up as a schoolmaster at a fourth-rate school, hired despite not meeting any of the qualifications in their advertisement. He there encounters a cornucopia of eccentric characters, including another master who has a wooden leg, a former clergyman with capital-D Doubts, and a servant who tells everyone he’s rich, but with a different tale for each about why he’s posing as a servant. Paul’s time at school leads to romance with a student’s mother, and that in turn leads to enormous complications in Paul’s life. Inspired in part by his own experiences in school and as a schoolmaster, Evelyn Waugh’s first published novel, Decline and Fall, is a dark and occasionally farcical satire of British college life. It’s something of a perverse coming-of-age story, subverting the expected journey and ending that the archetype usually demands. Shining a devastating light on many of the societal struggles of post-WWI Britain, Waugh took his novel’s title from another work that revealed the ineluctable descent of a great society: Gibbons’ The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Waugh issued a new edition of Decline and Fall in 1960 that contained restored text that was removed by his publisher from the first edition. This Standard Ebooks edition follows the first edition. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
