Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story describes, in considerable detail, the enhancements that were built into the DNA of the New People that were produced. A major enhancement is the ability to communicate by telepathy. Many people believe that we all have some telepathic ability built into us. There are countless examples of this in our everyday lives, and in this story, examples are given as well as a rationale for the emergence of this ability. Our problem is that the ability in most of us is undeveloped, largely because we dont, in our formative years, need it. Some of us, who grow up in an environment where there is a real need to negotiate for our success and survival, do develop this ability. This may be why many such people are so successful in later life, since they seem to know better than others what is going on in anothers mind, and act on that knowledge. The great business men, political leaders and others whose success depends upon their ability to sense the minds of their audience are good examples. In this story the need arose to separate what the characters were saying out loud from what was being transmitted by telepathy. To make it clear to the reader the convention has been introduced in which telepathic transmissions are written in italics. May 2012

Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly exploration of concepts and representations of Artificial Intelligence in ancient Greek and Roman epic, including their reception in later literature and culture. Contributors look at how Hesiod, Homer, Apollonius of Rhodes, Moschus, Ovid and Valerius Flaccus crafted the first literary concepts concerned with automata and the quest for artificial life, as well as technological intervention improving human life. Parts one and two consider, respectively, archaic Greek, and Hellenistic and Roman, epics. Contributors explore the representations of Pandora in Hesiod, and Homeric automata such as Hephaestus' wheeled tripods, the Phaeacian king Alcinous' golden and silver guard dogs, and even the Trojan Horse. Later examples cover Artificial Intelligence and automation (including Talos) in the Argonautica of Apollonius and Valerius Flaccus, and Pygmalion's ivory woman in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Part three underlines how these concepts benefit from analysis of the ekphrasis device, within which they often feature. These chapters investigate the cyborg potential of the epic hero and the literary implications of ancient technology. Moving into contemporary examples, the final chapters consider the reception of ancient literary Artificial Intelligence in contemporary film and literature, such as the Czech science-fiction epic Starvoyage, or Small Cosmic Odyssey by Jan Kr?esadlo (1995) and the British science-fiction novel The Holy Machine by Chris Beckett (2004).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author explores this tradition in depth and defines it with a breadth of vision, a dynamic vigor and freedom rarely paralleled today....His method, flexible, generous, humane in the best sense of the word, eschews pedantry, dogma, useless theorizing and scholastic argumentation."--The New York Times Book Review. "I wish to make it clear that The Gates of Horn represents an outstanding critical accomplishment."--Saturday Review. In the Odyssey, Homer describes two gates of the imagination: one of ivory through which fictitious dreams pass, and the other of horn, through which nothing but the truth may pass. Realism is the type of literature that passes through the horn, and in this significant study of the genre Levin examines a major form of Realism--the French novel--and focuses on five of its masters--Stendahl, Balzac, Flaubert, Zola, and Proust. Now available in paperback, Levin's study is a veritable reconstruction of the artistic and intellectual life of a nation.
