Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True stories of Southern women in the Civil War for “any reader with an interest in women’s history . . . An eye-opening experience.” —ForeWord The women featured in this anthology refute the common belief that Southern women were delicate and fragile. These Confederate women started relief organizations and militia companies, learned how to fire a musket, and even worked as spies. One courageous woman disguised herself as a male officer and recruited troops from around the South. Confederate Women includes ten essays about the crucial role Southern women played during and after the Civil War, believing that the war was “certainly ours as well as that of the men.” Excerpts from correspondence with their sons, fathers, husbands, and other women shed light on their unique position in America’s past. Often women are left out of history books, only to fade into the shadows of time. Thanks to Mauriel Phillips Joslyn and her contributing authors, these women will remain a part of history, never to be forgotten. “An affecting reminder that Southern women faced the challenges of the wartime era with courage and determination.” —Civil War News Previously published as Valor and Lace: The Roles of Confederate Women 1861–1865

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively free-hitting narrative . . . written with a proper appreciation of the grotesque humor of many of its episodes . . . but also with the proper appreciation of the political significance . . . for the rest of the United States. New York Times Book Review This book deserves to be widely read. Library Journal Nothing like the regime of Huey Long has ever been enacted on American soil before. Only a patriot of the staunchest character could stand up to the power of Huey and the threats and reprisals which he used so freely. Those who were willing to do so paralleled the acts of America's bravest patriots at any stage of American history. Nearly all the books on this subject end with the death of Huey Long. Louisiana Hayride continues through the years of scandals which ended in my election in 1940. Huey's prediction that his successors would never be able to wield his great power without going to jail was born out by events described in this book. This is the story of the sowing of the wind, but the major part of the book is devoted to the reaping of the whirlwind. In this telling, Louisiana Hayride is unsurpassed. It is a story for all Americans. From the forward by Sam Houston Jones Governor, 1940-1944

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jackson Day-by-Day details the daily events of the soldier his men called ÒStonewallÓ during those stirring days of 1861-1863. Before the Civil War, Thomas J. Jackson was an obscure, eccentric professor at the Virginia military institute in Lexington, Virginia. For Jackson, everything changed when he donned a gray uniform. Over the next two years, he would become a household name across the South, a terror to his Union enemies, and one of best American generals of all time. Fame took root at Manassas, where Jackson and his troops stood Òlike a stone wallÓ and the former professor earned his undying nickname. Next came his legendary Shenandoah Valley Campaign, where Jackson mystified, misled, outfought, and defeated several Union armies, terrifying the authorities in Washington, D.C. in the process. This campaign is still studied by military professionals around the world for its masterful flanking movements and rapid deployment. JacksonÕs holding of the railroad cut at Second Manassas in late August 1862, coupled with his capture of Harpers Ferry (the largest surrender of American troops until the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in 1942) and defensive stand at Sharpsburg (Antietam) made him in many ways more popular than Robert E. Lee. Jackson was at the peak of his career at Chancellorsville in May 1863, where his bold flank march and devastating attack crushed the wing of HookerÕs army. Unfortunately, he was mortally wounded that night by friendly fire, and died just a handful of days later. SchildtÕs Jackson Day-by-Day will please general readers and more search researchers alike, and will find a permanent place on your bookshelf or in your electronic reading device for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day in 1852, The Princess, one of the finest steamboats afloat on the Mississippi River one hundred years ago was rounding the bend a Duncans Point about ten miles below Baton Rouge, when the boilers exploded with a frightful loss of life. The disaster occurred in front of the Conrad cottage where a descendant, the late G. Mather Conrad, of New Orleans, was born and lived as a youth. Lyle Saxon in his Old Louisiana tells of having known an old gentleman who remembered the awful holocaust. Then a little boy, this old gentleman was awaiting the return of his mother and father from New Orleans. He saw the Princess come around the bend and then turn in toward the bank. As he watched he heard a terrific explosion and saw the steamboat burst into flames. Mr. F. D. Conrad, plantation owner of that generation, so Saxon tells us, sent his slaves out in skiffs to rescue the men and women who crew struggling in the water. Many of them were frightfully scalded by steam from the broken boilers. Sheets were spread on the ground under the oak trees on the lawn and barrels of flour were broken open and the contents poured on the sheets. As the scalded people were pulled from the river, they were stripped and rolled in the flour, where they writhed and shrieked in agony. The little boy went from one sufferer to another seeking his father and mother. They were not there. They returned from New Orleans on a later boat, but he never forgot the anguish of his search.
