Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain invented the modern industrial city in the nineteenth century. But by the late 20th century most British cities had become basket cases. Today London overshadows the rest of the country, as the UK's only 'world city'. No other large country is anything like as economically and politically centralized. This concentration of power damages Britain's economy and fuels the sense of discontent felt by the millions of people for whom the capital seems like another planet. Yet it is cities that are fuelling economic growth around the world. Mike Emmerich looks at the DNA of cities and how it expresses itself in their institutions, governance, public services, religion and culture. He argues that the UK needs a devolutionary ratchet, allowing major cities the freedom to seek devolution of any area of public spending that is not inherently national in nature (such as defence). Cities should have powers to raise some of their own taxes including business, property and sales based taxes and to increase them. He calls for sustained investment in transport and infrastructure, and also training. An innovation-centric industrial policy would also have an emphasis on the social fabric of cities and - crucially - their institutions.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983 The Urban and Regional Transformation of Britain, analyses economic and social changes recorded across the cities and regions of Britain since the Barlow Report. The collection analyses the whole country at a more detailed scale than the ten Standard Regions, for which most official statistics are produced. Although there are important differences between the major regions of Britain, many of the recent processes of change appear to have operated at a local level within rather than between regions. The essays in this volume bring together change at the regional and local labour market scales and provides a comprehensive statement of urban and regional change, seeking to highlight the new spatial priorities of the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From local bike-sharing initiatives to overhauls of transport infrastructure, mobility is one of the most important areas in which modern cities are trying to realize a more sustainable future. Yet even as politicians and planners look ahead, there remain critical insights to be gleaned from the history of urban mobility and the unsustainable practices that still impact our everyday lives. United by their pursuit of a “usable past,” the studies in this interdisciplinary collection consider the ecological, social, and economic aspects of urban mobility, showing how historical inquiry can make both conceptual and practical contributions to the projects of sustainability and urban renewal.

Inner city problems in advanced countries are being exacerbated by the decentralisation of economic activities and higher income groups. Only offices and tourism offer some prospects of growth, but these vary in their potential from one city to another. This book assesses changes in the structure of urban areas, concentrating on the process of decentralisation and the consequences for the inner city and city centre. It examines and evaluates policies and makes suggestions for the future management of the city.

Book excerpt: The Future of Man documents the proceedings of a Symposium held at the Royal Geographical Society London, on April 1, 1971. This book deals with choices that man makes or may make, attempting to understand the paradox that the more man knows about himself and the environment the more baffling and controversial his choices become. The major problems of human survival, such as living space, natural resources, relationships with the rest of the living world, and creation, nurture and prolongation of life are also described. Other topics include the past and future distribution of homo sapiens and his activities in Great Britain, artificial synthesis of new life forms in relation to social and industrial evolution, and nature and control of aging. This compilation is recommended for biologists and scientists aiming to understand the effects of technical innovation on people and their environment.

Likewise, planning raises arguably the most important long term issues in housing, given the environmental consequences of urban development and the use of the home. Homes, Cities and Neighbourhoods documents the evolution of typical urban landscapes from 1900 to the present with an emphasis on contemporary issues and practice. In doing this, the book examines in detail: -
