Book excerpt: "Captain Alicia DeVries, Imperial Cadre, has been many things in her life. An Imperial Marine, dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Terran Empire she loves. An Imperial Cadre drop commando, personal liegewoman of Emperor Seamus II, whom she honors and reveres. Hero of the Terran Empire, one of only three living holders of the Banner of Terra. And now, outcast, rogue, pirate ... and madwoman." "From the time she graduated from high school, Alicia DeVries knew what she wanted to do with her life, and she did it well. On planets like Gyangtse, Chengchou, Fuller, and Louvain - in cities like Zhikotse and Shallingsport - she's put her life on the line in defense of her Empire and Emperor again and again. She's given her blood, and the lives of men and women closer to her than brothers and sisters." "But her dead have been betrayed in the name of political expediency. The justice they deserved has been denied, and a brokenhearted Alicia DeVries has resigned her commission and retired to the colony world of Mathison with her family to begin a new life." "Yet Alicia is still a warrior, and the pirates who attacked Mathison, tortured and murdered her family, and left her for dead, are about to discover just how big a mistake they made." "Imperial Intelligence can't find them. The Imperial Fleet can't catch them. Local defenses can't stop them. But Alicia has stolen an imperial A1 starship from the bleeding edge of technology and set out to teach them what vengeance truly is." "Her fellow veterans think she's gone mad, the Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders, and the "pirates" have allies at the highest levels of the Imperial government. But Alicia DeVries has two allies of her own. Allies no one knows about. Allies as implacable as she is: a self-aware computer, and a creature from the mists of Old Earth's most ancient legends."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great romance and fear of bloody revolution--strange blend of idealism and terror--have been superseded by blind faith in the bloodless expansion of human rights and global capitalism. Flying in the face of history, violence is dismissed as rare, immoral, and counterproductive. Arguing against this pervasive wishful thinking, the distinguished historian Arno J. Mayer revisits the two most tumultuous and influential revolutions of modern times: the French Revolution of 1789 and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Although these two upheavals arose in different environments, they followed similar courses. The thought and language of Enlightenment France were the glories of western civilization; those of tsarist Russia's intelligentsia were on its margins. Both revolutions began as revolts vowed to fight unreason, injustice, and inequality; both swept away old regimes and defied established religions in societies that were 85% peasant and illiterate; both entailed the terrifying return of repressed vengeance. Contrary to prevalent belief, Mayer argues, ideologies and personalities did not control events. Rather, the tide of violence overwhelmed the political actors who assumed power and were rudderless. Even the best plans could not stem the chaos that at once benefited and swallowed them. Mayer argues that we have ignored an essential part of all revolutions: the resistances to revolution, both domestic and foreign, which help fuel the spiral of terror. In his sweeping yet close comparison of the world's two transnational revolutions, Mayer follows their unfolding--from the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Bolshevik Declaration of the Rights of the Toiling and Exploited Masses; the escalation of the initial violence into the reign of terror of 1793-95 and of 1918-21; the dismemberment of the hegemonic churches and religion of both societies; the "externalization" of the terror through the Napoleonic wars; and its "internalization" in Soviet Russia in the form of Stalin's "Terror in One Country." Making critical use of theory, old and new, Mayer breaks through unexamined assumptions and prevailing debates about the attributes of these particular revolutions to raise broader and more disturbing questions about the nature of revolutionary violence attending new foundations.

Book excerpt: Eden Waring is an Avatar, possessing astounding psychic abilities . . . and destined to fight an ancient evil. Her battles against Mordaunt, the ageless Dark Side of God, have been many, but the war is far from over. She destroyed Mordaunt's human body in the deserts of Las Vegas, but his many followers still walk the Earth. They vow to resurrect their Master and exact vengeance upon Eden in a melee of magic and violence. As Eden fights for her life, her doppelganger, Gwen, separates from Eden to fight the battle on another front. In another dimension, the other half of Mordaunt's soul hides within a man living in Jubilation County, Georgia – in the year 1926. To keep Mordaunt powerless, Gwen must travel back in time, but finds that awaiting her arrival is a vicious entity known as Delilah. The epic story that began with The Fury reaches its electrifying conclusion, as unsuspecting worlds merge on the cusp of an age of darkness--a force only one woman, across a vast span of time and space, can stop. Book excerpt: An early pulse-pounding thriller from the Twilight Zone scribe and multi-award-winning author of I Am Legend. Vincent was a brilliant pianist, but a disturbed personality. The asylum he was committed to could not hold him. He escaped on an early Sunday morning, bent on revenge against those who betrayed him—his manager and the man who married his lover, Ruth. With his temper spiraling out of control, Vincent pursued his prey without mercy, brutally slaughtering anyone who got in his way. For four hours he would terrorize a community. His rage would not be sated no matter how much blood he spilled. And he refused to let anyone keep him from Ruth ever again . . . Richard Matheson, “one of the great names in American terror fiction,” unleashes a relentless novel of chilling suspense in Fury on Sunday (The Philadelphia Inquirer). “The author who influenced me the most as a writer was Richard Matheson.” —Stephen King “Perhaps no other living author is as responsible for chilling a generation with tantalizing nightmare visions.” —The New York Times “Matheson’s a writer who just has the special knack, the deft skill to imagine terrifying scenarios on any scale, large and small, and give them chilling possibility.” —Los Angeles Times

Born Greek goddesses and turned badass women of revenge, the Furies have spent centuries enacting justice on unsuspecting killers who have escaped their rightful fate. And if they get a little carried away in the process, what's a little extra blood and guts in the grand scheme of things? But the Furies aren't the only mythological creatures walking the streets of Earth. A primordial demon has escaped the bonds of the underworld, hopped a ride on an unsuspecting human...and is on a warpath, determined to bring about Armageddon, killing every god he can find along the way. Becoming a small-town serial killer is just the power-up he needs. Detective Dan Lanahan doesn't believe in gods. He certainly doesn't believe in dragons and demons. All he knows is that someone just left his niece tied to a tree, eyes gouged out, mysterious symbols carved into her flesh, and now they're on a murderous rampage through his town. He's going to stop this killer if it's the last thing he does...even if that means going face to face with the impossible. To make matters worse, now a Fury is in love with him. Angels of Vengeance is a fantasy adventure full of violence, morbid humor, an unsuspecting detective, and three sister goddesses out for revenge.
