Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over forty years now, the Northern Mariana Islands has governed itself as a "commonwealth" of the UnitedStates pursuant to the Northern Marianas Covenant. My first book, From Colonialism To Self-Government: TheNorthern Marianas Experience, was published in 2010.The Fundamental Issues Affecting the Northern Mariana Islands discusses in greater detail the politicalarrangement between the United States and the Northern Marianas. It highlights and discusses some ofthe fundamental issues affecting the Northern Marianas as a self-governing commonwealth within the Americanpolitical family. The first set of issues includes its geographical isolation, small land area, small population, lack of natural resources, and lack of capital required for economic development. The second set of issues relates to local self-governance and matters of qualification and competency of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) public officials, both elected and appointed. In order for the CNMI to succeed as a self-governing commonwealth, several fundamental matters have to be addressed and issues related to such matters have to corrected by its leaders. The first major subject relates to the fragile, insular economy of the CNMI. Its only viableindustry has been the visitor industry, which is buffeted often by natural disasters, regional and international financial crises, public health crises, and so forth. The second major subject relates to self-governance matters, which should be addressed through public education, seminars on government ethics, and active enforcement of the law, and so forth.Unless these fundamental issues are addressed and resolved, the CNMI experiment in self government might end up being a failure. And we should never allow this to happen.

Book Synopsis Cultures of Commemoration by : Keith L. Camacho
Download or read book Cultures of Commemoration written by Keith L. Camacho and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941 the Japanese military attacked the US naval base Pearl Harbor on the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu. Although much has been debated about this event and the wider American and Japanese involvement in the war, few scholars have explored the Pacific War’s impact on Pacific Islanders. Cultures of Commemoration fills this crucial gap in the historiography by advancing scholarly understanding of Pacific Islander relations with and knowledge of American and Japanese colonialisms in the twentieth century. Drawing from an extensive archival base of government, military, and popular records, Chamorro scholar Keith L Camacho traces the formation of divergent colonial and indigenous histories in the Mariana Islands, an archipelago located in the western Pacific and home to the Chamorro people. He shows that US colonial governance of Guam, the southernmost island, and that of Japan in the Northern Mariana Islands created competing colonial histories that would later inform how Americans, Chamorros, and Japanese experienced and remembered the war and its aftermath. Central to this discussion is the American and Japanese administrative development of "loyalty" and "liberation" as concepts of social control, collective identity, and national belonging. Just how various Chamorros from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands negotiated their multiple identities and subjectivities is explored with respect to the processes of history and memory-making among this "Americanized" and "Japanized" Pacific Islander population. In addition, Camacho emphasizes the rise of war commemorations as sites for the study of American national historic landmarks, Chamorro Liberation Day festivities, and Japanese bone-collecting missions and peace pilgrimages. Ultimately, Cultures of Commemoration demonstrates that the past is made meaningful and at times violent by competing cultures of American, Chamorro, and Japanese commemorative practices.

Download or read book Climate Change and Pacific Islands written by Victoria Keener and published by NCA Regional Input Reports. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared for the 2013 National Climate Assessment and a landmark study in terms of its breadth and depth of coverage, Climate Change and the Pacific Islands was developed by the Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment, a collaborative effort engaging federal, state, and local government agencies, non-government organizations, academician, businesses, and community groups to inform and prioritize their activities in the face of a changing climate. The book assesses the state of knowledge about climate change indicators, impacts, and adaptive capacity of the Hawaiian archipelago and the US-Affiliated Pacific Islands. The book provides the basis for understanding the key observations and impacts from climate change in the region, including the rise in surface air and sea-surface temperatures, along with sea levels, and the changes in ocean chemistry, rainfall amount and distribution, weather extremes, and widespread ecosystem changes. Rich in science and case studies, it examines the latest climate change impacts, scenarios, vulnerabilities, and adaptive capacity and offers decision makers and stakeholders a substantial basis from which to make informed choices that will affect the well-being of the region’s inhabitants in the decades to come.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Issues in Estuarine Physics by : Arnoldo Valle-Levinson
Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Estuarine Physics written by Arnoldo Valle-Levinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are of high socioeconomic importance with twenty-two of the thirty-two largest cities in the world located on river estuaries. Estuaries bring together fluxes of fresh and saline water, as well as fluvial and marine sediments, and contain high biological diversity. Increasingly sophisticated field observation technology and numerical modeling have produced significant advances in our understanding of the physical properties of estuaries over the last decade. This book introduces a classification for estuaries before presenting the basic physics and hydrodynamics of estuarine circulation and the various factors that modify it in time and space. It then covers special topics at the forefront of research such as turbulence, fronts in estuaries and continental shelves, low inflow estuaries, and implications of estuarine transport for water quality. Written by leading authorities on estuarine and lagoon hydrodynamics, this volume provides a concise foundation for academic researchers, advanced students and coastal resource managers.

Book Synopsis Reluctant Reception by : Kelsey P. Norman
Download or read book Reluctant Reception written by Kelsey P. Norman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking to understand why host states treat migrants and refugees inclusively, exclusively, or without any direct engagement, Kelsey P. Norman offers this original, comparative analysis of the politics of asylum seeking and migration in the Middle East and North Africa. While current classifications of migrant and refugee engagement in the Global South mistake the absence of formal policy and law for neglect, Reluctant Reception proposes the concept of 'strategic indifference', where states proclaim to be indifferent toward migrants and refugees, thereby inviting international organizations and local NGOs to step in and provide services on the state's behalf. Using the cases of Egypt, Morocco and Turkey to develop her theory of 'strategic indifference', Norman demonstrates how, by allowing migrants and refugees to integrate locally into large informal economies, and by allowing organizations to provide basic services, host countries receive international credibility while only exerting minimal state resources.
