Book Synopsis The Ocean, the Bird, and the Scholar by : Helen Vendler
Download or read book The Ocean, the Bird, and the Scholar written by Helen Vendler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Times Higher Education Book of the Week One of our foremost commentators on poetry examines the work of a broad range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century English, Irish, and American poets. The Ocean, the Bird, and the Scholar gathers two decades’ worth of Helen Vendler’s essays, book reviews, and occasional prose—including the 2004 Jefferson Lecture—in a single volume. “It’s one of [Vendler’s] finest books, an impressive summation of a long, distinguished career in which she revisits many of the poets she has venerated over a lifetime and written about previously. Reading it, one can feel her happiness in doing what she loves best. There is scarcely a page in the book where there isn’t a fresh insight about a poet or poetry.” —Charles Simic, New York Review of Books “Vendler has done perhaps more than any other living critic to shape—I might almost say ‘create’—our understanding of poetry in English.” —Joel Brouwer, New York Times Book Review “Poems are artifacts and [Vendler] shows us, often thrillingly, how those poems she considers the best specimens are made...A reader feels that she has thoroughly absorbed her subjects and conveys her understanding with candor, clarity, wit.” —John Greening, Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Criticism: The Study of Poetry; John Keats, Wordsworth IF the Apostle of Sweetness and Light be studied simply because he is the Apostle of Culture, he will be most help ful to the young people of this practical age, - this age in which the 'tendency is toward commercialism.' But add to this the strong points of the author's style, the delicacy of touch, the clear incisive analysis, the energy of purpose - with the gentle man behind it all, - the constant endeavor to stimulate to something higher and nobler, and the value of such study cannot be estimated. Book Synopsis Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry (Classic Reprint) by : Plutarch and Basil the Great
Download or read book Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry (Classic Reprint) written by Plutarch and Basil the Great and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry The recent very general interest in poetics has led me to prepare these translations of the essays on poetry by Plutarch and Basil the Great, in the hope that they may prove useful to students of literature. Although they were not epoch-making, these essays are worthy of consideration, for, besides their intrinsic value, they mark interesting stages in the history of poetic criticism. The essay on How a Young Man Ought to Study Poetry was first rendered into English by Philemon Holland, who made a complete translation of the Morals, which was issued in octavo from the press of Arnold Hatfield, a London printer, in 1603. Its title reads as follows: The Philosophic, commonlie called The Morals, written by the learned Philosopher Plutarch of Chaeronea. Translated out of Greek into English, and conferred with the Latin translations and the French, by Philemon Holland of Coventrie, Doctor in Physicke. Whereunto are annexed the Summaries necessary to be read before every Treatise. This version, though its archaism possesses an undeniable charm, is not altogether adapted to modern requirements. A second edition, newly revised and corrected, appeared in 1657, and this was followed not many years later by the translation of the Morals by Several Hands, published in London in 1684- 1694.To this work Simon Ford contributed the version of the essay on How a Young Man Ought to Study Poetry. Fords translation is clumsy, frequently obscure, and often wide of the Greek. In 1870 Professor Goodwin offered a corrected and revised text of this rendering of the Morals, and the fact that the sixth edition appeared in 1898 attests the usefulness of this revised version. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Defense of Poesy: Otherwise Known as an Apology for Poetry Sidney's estimate of poetry heralded such poetic achieve ment as the world had only once or twice witnessed. What Sidney outlined, Spenser and Shakespeare executed, though not always in the precise forms which he himself would have approved. In this essay he appears as a link between the soundest. Theory of ancient times and the romantic pro duction of the modern era, as a humanist actuated by ethi cal convictions, as a man of affairs discharging the function of the scholar with the imaginative insight of the poet. T o assist in placing the student of English literature at the point of View from which he can rightly judge of the merits and relations of Sidney's immortal disquisition is the object of the present editor's labors. In modernizing the spelling and punctuation of the text, I have been guided by the principles which have been well expressed by Dr. Edwin A. Abbott, in the Preface to his edition of Bacon's Essays, pp. Iii - iv: As regards spelling, the principle adopted in the following pages is this: what ever quotations or extracts are made for critical or antiqua rian purposes are printed with the old spelling, but the Essays themselves are placed on the same footing as the Bible and Shakespeare; and, as being not for an age but for all ages, they are spelt with the spelling of this age. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Function of Criticism at the Present Time Many objections have been made to a proposition which, in some remarks of mine on translating Homer, I ventured to put forth; a proposition about criticism, and its importance at the present day. I said: "Of the literature of France and Germany, as of the intellect of Europe in general, the main effort, for now many years, has been a critical effort; the endeavour, in all branches of knowledge, theology, philosophy, history, art, science, to see the object as in itself it really is." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason and Romanticism: Essays in Literary Criticism In one sense our condition (but not only our condition, but the condition of the whole western world) is hopeless enough. We have carried criticism to the last degree of scepticism, even to the point where it becomes sceptical of itself, and have yet no new synthesis. We have destroyed our religion, and have left the emotions without a control. Emotions - which are individual, dis parate, and therefore contradictory - must be disciplined in a social community.
