Book excerpt: This magical tale takes us on an enchanted journey back in time to the origins of the I Ching in ancient China. A Tale of the I Ching tells the story of the young village ne'er-do-well, who becomes the first disciple of the great sage emperor Fu Hsi-the creator of the I Ching. As Fu Hsi opens the heart of the I Ching to the young student who sits at his feet, the inner workings of that great book of divination are revealed. Readers the world over say that the marvelous story of A Tale of the I Ching opens the I Ching to them as never before. "Of all the stories you have heard of the great sage ruler, even though they were magnified a hundred times, none can do him the honor he deserves. Of all people, he is the most worthy, the most honorable, the wisest. The wisdom of the world flows through him like a sparkling brook through the forest. When he speaks, time seems to cease." -from A Tale of the I Ching

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The I Ching, The Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text and the oldest of the Chinese classics. Possessing a history of more than two and a half millennia of commentary and interpretation, the I Ching is an influential text read throughout the world, providing inspiration to the worlds of religion, psychoanalysis, business, literature, and art. Originally a divination manual in the Western Zhou period (1000-750 BC), over the course of the Warring States period and early imperial period (500-200 BC) it was transformed into a cosmological text with a series of philosophical commentaries known as the "Ten Wings." After becoming part of the Five Classics in the 2nd century BC, the I Ching was the subject of scholarly commentary and the basis for divination practice for centuries across the Far East, and eventually took on an influential role in Western understanding of Eastern thought. The I Ching uses a type of divination called cleromancy, which produces apparently random numbers. Six numbers between 6 and 9 are turned into a hexagram, which can then be looked up in the I Ching book, arranged in an order known as the King Wen sequence. The interpretation of the readings found in the I Ching is a matter of centuries of debate, and many commentators have used the book symbolically, often to provide guidance for moral decision making as informed by Taoism and Confucianism. The hexagrams themselves have often acquired cosmological significance and paralleled with many other traditional names for the processes of change such as yin and yang and Wu Xing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a series of research notes and graphical illustrations selected from the author’s amazing research work. It shows how: · The Sixty-Four hexagrams were derived by using combinatory trigrams selected from the Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven trigram cyclic sequences. · The legendary authors of the I Ching, known as Fu Hsi and King Wen, used Key Coded Matrices which enabled them to change the hexagrams of the ancient Ma-wang-tui into the Standard Modern edition. · The formulation of the Trigram Order of Completion was derived by using Knight’s Chess /binary codes and the manipulation of hexagram identification numbers. · The cyclic sequences and trigram line to line transitions were utilized to formulate the King Wen’s hexagram arrangement. · The natural numerical notation for each individual trigram was mathematically derived. · The author’s inter-face code was derived and used to determine the mathematical methodology of the Genetic Code. · Trigram lines are manipulated to form the Inner and Outer Nuclear trigrams/ hexagrams. · The Genetic Code was determined from Fu Hsi’s diagram of the derivation of the Sixty-Four hexagrams. It also includes the constructional details of an analytical model calculator which can be created from the actual design details shown within this book. This document provides the conclusive evidence that the originator(s) of the I Ching used a mathematical system which encompassed a formalistic natural philosophy that sought to embrace the entire world in a system of number symbolism. It shows the links to the ancient Indian Vedic mathematical system which reveals the relationship between the I Ching and the Binary / Genetic Codes.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive introduction to the I Ching explains how to unlock the secrets of this ancient form of divination. The ancient Chinese formalized nature's shapes and forms into the I Ching, or Book of Changes, which is thought to be the oldest system of divination in the world. In the pages of the I Ching, we find sixty-four types of changes covering all of life’s transitions and laid out in symbol form as hexagrams and trigrams. This work explains how to follow a simple system of throwing coins to discern the appropriate symbols, then use the text and commentary and our own intuition to guide us towards certain action or knowledge. It also discusses how to use the ancient Taoist knowledge to promote self-awareness, positive health, and personal happiness.

Book excerpt: One of the five classics of Confucianism, the I Ching or Book of Changes has exerted a living influence in China for three thousand years. Beginning in the dawn of history as a book of oracles, it became a book of wisdom--a common source for both Confucianist and Taoist philosophy. The I Ching was little known in the West before James Legge's English translation (1882), and the appearance of the late Richard Wilhelm's poetic translation into German in 1923 made to work available to a wider public. This was in turned published in Bollingen Series (1950) in the translation of Cary F. Baynes. Now Professor Hellmut Wilhelm, of the University of Washington, carries on his father's work with a group of related studies of the Book of Changes. Born and educated in China, Hellmut Wilhelm grew up in an atmosphere of Chinese classical tradition. During the winter of 1943, he delivered the first version of these lectures to a group of Europeans, isolated in Peking under Japanese occupation, who wished to study the I Ching. Besides presenting a lucid explanation and interpretation of the I Ching, Professor Willhelm brings forward new scholarship and insights. Mrs. Baynes is again responsible for the translation. Originally published in 1960. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
