An Indian Buddhist teaches meditation to hundreds of people in the crowded corridor of a Bombay slum. An artist struggles to create his latest Buddha statue, combining Greek forms with traditional ones. In a remote Spanish valley a man follows a simple life of renunciation. These are all images of people who follow the Buddha's teachings within the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order and the Western Buddhist Order. The FWBO is a worldwide Buddhist movement that provides a modern context for practising Buddhism. This is a clear introduction to the practices, ideas and significance of this growing Buddhist movement.

Book excerpt: Since its inception in ancient India, Buddhism has provided, among other things, a philosophy of peace and pragmatic approaches to how peace can be attained, both by the individual, but also in society and in the world. The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order is a relatively young spiritual movement which aims to teach Buddhism and enable people to practise its teaching in the modern, industrialised world. The FWB0 emphasises meditation and the practise of Buddhist ethics as the main means to the development of aware, compassionate and peaceful individuals, as well as providing opportunities for adherents to live and work together in ways which enhance their spiritual lives. In order to evaluate how successful the FWBO has been as a spiritual movement to date, it is necessary to examine how effective have been its main practices and institutions in enabling people to develop the positive qualities of compassion, wisdom, peacefulness and true individuality; whether it avoids the pitfalls faced by most New Religious Movements; and what potential it has for expanding its influence beyond its immediate adherents. A small sample of interviewees found that the practices and institutions of the FWB0 had generally enabled them to develop the aforementioned positive qualities. There were some reservations about one or two aspects of the movement, in particular with regard to sexual relationships, standard of living, and attitudes towards Sangharakshita, the founder of the Order. However, in general, the FWB0 appears to have avoided the more obvious traps that New Religious Movements can fall into, and there are many possibilities for its influence to grow and spread.

Book excerpt: Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels is what makes one a Buddhist - the ever-deepening act by which one turns from the mundane towards the transcendental, and the definitive act of the Buddhist's life, from which all else follows. The practices, precepts and vows that direct a Buddhist's life-style are all subsidiary to that crucial commitment to the ideals embodied by the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

Book excerpt: The act of committing one's life to Buddhism and its three central tenets, the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha is known as many traditions as 'going for refuge'. Tracing his own path of discovery, Sangharakshita shows the importance of commitment to these three spiritual ideals and how this commitment provides a basis of unity among all Buddhists. In so doing he also tells the story of the founding of the Triratna Buddhist Community, an international Buddhist movement. Featuring a new additional foreword by Maitreyi, The History of My Going for Refuge makes essential reading for anyone interested in the history and development of Buddhism in the West.

Some may feel that their guru or teacher is all that they need. To others, the idea of sharing their inner and outer lives with others can seem a challenge or even a threat. But the spiritual community is not about unthinking conformity or belonging to a comfortable group. Rather, it is the free association of developing individuals choosing to help each other along the path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a growing academic acknowledgment around the world of a contemporary Buddhist phenomenon described as Engaged, or Socially Engaged Buddhism (SEB). It is a contested phenomenon variously associated with finding Buddhist solutions for social, political and ecological problems. The debate about its origins, practice and legitimacy has stirred academics and practitioners alike. Firstly, does such an approach to Buddhist practice constitute a departure with the past, in which case a new expression of an ancient practice is being experienced all around us? Or is this really a continuity of practice, adapted to inform current understanding given that some would describe Buddhism as always having been engaged? Adaptation and Developments in Western Buddhism examines the UK Socially Engaged Buddhist experience captured through a series of five case studies of Buddhist groups and a survey undertaken over two years in the field. The volume is a ground-breaking and benchmark analysis of Socially Engaged Buddhism in the UK, drawing for the first time on evidence from practitioner's experiences with which to characterise the previously dichotomous academic debate. Ultimately, the volume locates Socially Engaged Buddhism in the UK and places it within the broader and global context of an emerging “Western Buddhism”, characterising the phenomenon and its relationships to the wider Buddhist world.

Book excerpt: A LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER In the face of systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence, how can we metabolize our anger into a force for liberation? White supremacy in the United States has long necessitated that Black rage be suppressed, repressed, or denied, often as a means of survival, a literal matter of life and death. In Love and Rage, Lama Rod Owens, coauthor of Radical Dharma, shows how this unmetabolized anger--and the grief, hurt, and transhistorical trauma beneath it--needs to be explored, respected, and fully embodied to heal from heartbreak and walk the path of liberation. This is not a book about bypassing anger to focus on happiness, or a road map for using spirituality to transform the nature of rage into something else. Instead, it is one that offers a potent vision of anger that acknowledges and honors its power as a vehicle for radical social change and enduring spiritual transformation. Love and Rage weaves the inimitable wisdom and lived experience of Lama Rod Owens with Buddhist philosophy, practical meditation exercises, mindfulness, tantra, pranayama, ancestor practices, energy work, and classical yoga. The result is a book that serves as both a balm and a blueprint for those seeking justice who can feel overwhelmed with anger--and yet who refuse to relent. It is a necessary text for these times.

Book excerpt: British Buddhism presents a useful insight into contemporary British Buddhist practice. It provides a survey of the seven largest Buddhist traditions in the United Kingdom, including the Forest Sangha (Theravada) and the Samatha Trust (Theravada), the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition (Soto Zen) and Soka Gakkai (both originally Japanese), the Tibetan Karma Kagyu and New Kadampa traditions and Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. Based on extensive fieldwork, this fascinating book determines how and to what extent British Buddhist groups are changing from their Asian roots, and whether any forms of British Buddhism are beginning to emerge. Despite the popularity of Buddhism in Britain, there has so far been no study documenting the full range of teachings and practice. This is an original study that fills this gap and serves as an important reference point for further studies in this increasingly popular field.
