Book excerpt: This research focuses on the participation of youth in the early years of the French Revolution, and attempts to answer two interrelated questions : how did the French Revolution impact the political consciousness of young people; and it turn, how did young people impact the French Revolution? To answer these questions, the present dissertation studies the emergence of a revolutionary youth in the provinces of Brittany and Anjou. The central argument is that between 1788 and 1791, the French Revolution allowed for the creation of a new category of political actors, who were not primarily defined by their social class, their gender, or their race, but rather by their generational position, i.e. the youth. Two characteristics of the French Revolution can explain the irruption of youth onto the political scene. First was the radical reorientation of French political imagination towards the future, which gave youth a justification to take part in public life that they did not enjoy in the Old Regime: by claiming to embody the future that the revolutionary elite was striving to construct, young people could intervene in public affairs precisely because of their generational status. Second was the disintegration of public power during the first year of the Revolution, which opened a space for youth at the level of revolutionary practice: during the transition between the old and the new regime, independent youth formations were able to fill the power vacuum created in the summer of 1789 and assist the new revolutionary authorities in reestablishing and maintaining order in the provinces.
