Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Humorists: From the Twelfth to the Nineteenth Century I have given in translation most of the pieces taken to show the character and genius of my authors. The greater number are translated for the first time, I trust without too much detriment to the originals. The whimsical poem of Ver-Vert is given nearly in full. Two or three of these studies have, in somewhat different forms, already appeared. I have to express my best thanks to the editor of the "British Quarterly," for permission to reproduce as much as I thought fit of a paper on the "Romance of the Rose;" to the editor of " Macmillan's Maga-z'ne," for a similar permission concerning a paper on Rabelais; and to the editor of "Temple Bar," for permission to use again what I pleased of papers on Moliere, La Fontaine, and Searron. I do not like to allow this volume to go forth without also expressing my obligations to my friend Mr. S. Lee, of my own college and Lincoln's Inn, for many valuable critical suggestions. Download or read book Vive la Revolution written by Mark Steel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us, the French Revolution has been reduced to jokes about Marie-Antoinette, guillotines and the Scarlet Pimpernel. But for Mark Steel, bestselling author of REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL, the French Revolution was one of the most inspirational moments in human history - a moment when ordinary people changed the world and became extraordinary. It deserves better jokes than that. In this revolutionary new book, Steel banishes stuffiness from history, telling us what happened in France between the storming of the Bastille and the rise of Napoleon, bringing to life the people who made them happen. His account is dominated by bizarre events and splendid characters, from the famously odd Robespierre, Danton and Thomas Paine, to the less well known Drouet, the local postman who arrested the fleeing King because he recognised him as the man off of the money. VIVE LA REVOLUTION is an uproariously serious work of history - brilliantly funny and insightful, it puts the peculiarity of individual people back at the centre of the story.

Book Synopsis War, Memory, and the Politics of Humor by : Allen Douglas
Download or read book War, Memory, and the Politics of Humor written by Allen Douglas and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War, Memory, and the Politics of Humor features carnage and cannibalism, gender and cross-dressing, drunks and heroes, militarism and memory, all set against the background of World War I France. Allen Douglas shows how a new satiric weekly, the Canard Enchaîné, exploited these topics and others to become one of France's most influential voices of reaction to the Great War. The Canard, still published today, is France's leading satiric newspaper and the most successful periodical of the twentieth century, and Douglas colorfully illuminates the mechanisms of its unique style. Following the Canard from its birth in 1915 to the eve of the Great Depression, the narrative reveals a heady mix of word play, word games, and cartoons. Over the years the journal--generally leftist, specifically antimilitarist and anti-imperialist--aimed its shots in all directions, using some stereotypes the twenty-first century might find unacceptable. But Douglas calls its humor an affirmation of life, and as such the most effective antidote to war.
