Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The true story of a seemingly ordinary mail carrier whose approach to work and life has the power to transform the everyday into the extraordinary “This beloved business classic has inspired millions of people over the years, and today Mark Sanborn’s transformative insights are more timely and necessary than ever.”—Jon Gordon, author of The Energy Bus and co-author of The Coffee Bean Meet Fred. In this small yet powerful book, Mark Sanborn, member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, recounts the story of a USPS carrier who introduced himself one day shortly after Sanborn had moved to a new home in Denver. Fred, however, was no average mailman. As Sanborn came to discover, Fred was the kind of worker who exemplifies everything “right” with customer service. Did people want packages left on the porch or prefer a notice to pick them up at the post office? Fred made sure he knew the answer. When another delivery service left a package at the wrong house, Fred shepherded it safely to the intended recipient. Others might have seen delivering mail as less-than-glamorous work, but Fred seized the chance to find meaning in the mundane, competing with himself every day to find opportunities to make his customers smile. We’ve all encountered people like Fred. In this deeply inspiring book, Sanborn illuminates the four basic principles anyone can use to bring fresh energy and creativity to our work and life: how to make a tangible difference every day, build stronger relationships, create real value for others without spending a penny, and constantly reinvent yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signature creation of cartoonist Roger Langridge, Fred the Clown is the thinking man's idiot. Fred has an eye for the ladies, as well as several other organs, but the only part of themselves they're willing to share with him is a carefully placed kneecap. Fred the Clown's misadventures are a curious balance of bleakness and joyful absurdism; the universe may dump on Fred from a great height, but he never gives up. More often than not, they involve the pursuit of a lady—any lady will do, it seems, but bearded ladies are at the top of the list. Disappointment seems inevitable, and it usually is; yet, almost despite himself, Langridge will occasionally give Fred a happy ending out of nowhere... p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.9px Arial; color: #424242}

Book excerpt: The world of skateboarding meets architectural beauty Fred Mortagne is a self-taught French director and photographer who is internationally acclaimed for his images of skateboarding and street photography. Attraper au vol (Catch in the Air) is the culmination of Mortagne's photographic career, from 2000 to 2015. A feast of lines and angles, his black-and-white compositions blend his subjects into their environments, offering an abstract perspective on architecture, geometry and the human figure. His work intrigues both skaters and nonskaters alike, as it emphasizes the esthetic beauty of skate and urban culture rather than pure performance (although the raw talent of his subjects is readily apparent). "As a young skate rat in the early nineties, I was super into watching skate videos, and very early I was sensitive to how the videos were made," he told an interviewer. "When the filming was good, I was super thrilled. This pushed me to begin filming my own clips with my friends, for fun ... for over 30 years, it has been the love of my life. Skateboarding has taken me to so many places--not just physically, but culturally and artistically." This book includes a foreword by the world-renowned photographer Anton Corbijn and an essay by legendary skateboarder Geoff Rowley, with whom Mortagne has worked extensively. Fred Mortagne, also known as French Fred, is a skateboarder, photographer and filmmaker living in France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida PI Fred Carver is back—in the final set of crime thrillers from the New York Times–bestselling author who “just keeps getting better and better” (Tony Hillerman). New York Times– and USA Today–bestselling author John Lutz has been hailed as “a major talent” by John Lescroart and “one of the masters” by Ridley Pearson. “Lutz offers up a heart-pounding roller coaster” (Jeffery Deaver) in his thrillers and “knows how to make you shiver” (Harlan Coben). “The Carver series is the finest work yet by this prolific author” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). After a criminal’s bullet shattered not only his knee but also his career as an Orlando cop and his marriage, Fred Carver starts over as a private detective. In this award-winning ten-book series, Lutz’s “dogged Carver is a believably heroic guy, tough, scarred and able to exhibit fear and courage at the same time” (Publishers Weekly). Spark: A retired schoolteacher turns to Carver after receiving an anonymous note that her husband was murdered. Her case takes the PI into the depths of Solartown: a stately Florida retirement community where seventy is the new forty, golf carts are the only way to get around, and death from natural causes is nowhere to be found. “Down and dirty . . . a good, fast read.” —The Houston Post Torch: Carver has to approach his latest case from every angle—as members of a love triangle start suddenly dying and disappearing, beginning with the woman who hired him minutes before her death. “For a long-running series, this one is still hot . . . with lots of nice noir touches to give it texture. The dialogue is brisk and brittle, the action gets nasty when it must, and the characters are as shady as the sunny climate allows.” —The New York Times Book Review Burn: When he is accused of stalking a woman he swears he’s never met, building contractor and recent widower Joel Brant asks Carver for help clearing his name. But as the PI digs into the case, he begins to wonder who’s stalking whom? “Riveting . . . Lutz’s eye for Florida noir is impeccable . . . Top of the line.” —Publishers Weekly Lightning: An explosion at a Florida clinic causes Carver’s lover, Beth, to miscarry. The police arrest an anti-abortion fanatic, but when the violence continues, Carver pursues the bomber on his own. “Lutz is an expert—he’ll have you glued to the page.” —The Denver Post

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Chappell is one of our most brilliant and versatile authors, with many novels, short stories, and volumes of poetry to his credit. This anthology bears witness to the scope of his career: a rich body of narrative and lyrical fictions ranging over history, mythology, science, philosophy, and Chappell's own life. He has been recognized as a storyteller "to put on the shelf with Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Eudora Welty" (The Washington Post). The Fred Chappell Reader is full of stories, including a complete novel, Dagon; substantial portions of four other novels; several short stories (two of which are previously uncollected); and poems culled from his books, an achievement for which Chappell shared (with John Ashbery) the prestigious Bolligen Prize in 1985. Here is an important and thoroughly rewarding selection of work by a major American writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gainsborough’s Fred Spiksley was one of the first working class youngsters in 1887 to live ‘the dream’ of becoming a professional footballer, before later finding a role as a globe-trotting coach. He thus dodged the inevitability of industrial, poorly paid, dangerous labour. Lightning fast, Spiksley created and scored hundreds of goals including, to the great joy of the future Queen Mary who chased him down the touchline, three against Scotland in 1893. The outside left scored both Sheffield Wednesday’s goals in the 2-1 defeat of Wolves in the 1896 FA Cup Final at the Crystal palace. Forced by injury to stop playing at aged 36, Spiksley adventured out into the world. He acted with Charlie Chaplin, escaped from a German prison at the start of the First World War and later made the first ‘talking’ football training film for youngsters. As a coach/manager he won titles in Sweden, Mexico, the USA and Germany, becoming the last Englishman to coach a German title-winning team with 1FC Nuremburg in 1927. He coached in Barcelona in 1932 and it was only after his involvement had exceeded 50 years, during which time, as this book explains, the game changed dramatically, did Spiksley’s football career end. As an addicted gambler and womaniser, Spiksley had his problems away from football. However, he was beloved by his football fans, including Herbert Chapman, the greatest manager of that era in English football who, towards the end of his life, picked him in his finest XI.
