Book excerpt: Over a century after the fall of the Horde, a fragile peace crumbles. The Tudorian Empire, led by the ruthless Emperor Cree, seeks to dominate the continent, clashing with the Alliance, a union of human kingdoms, and the Elven Kingdom of Aurelias. Gunther, the Empire's brutal commander, leads the charge eastward, encountering resistance from the Alliance. Meanwhile, Prince Loren negotiates with a power-hungry prince in the west, forging a potentially devastating alliance. Within Aurelias, tensions rise. Aewyn, the High Priestess, desires isolation, while her sister Leila, the commander, advocates for cooperation with the Alliance. Their conflicting visions threaten to divide the elves. Lara, sister to an aspiring Commander, haunted by the remnants of the Call of the Krakenos, succumbs to its dark desires, jeopardizing herself and those around her. As the web of deceit and ambition tightens, the once peaceful lands spiral towards war. Can trust be rebuilt, or will the continent be consumed by the flames of conflict once more? This trilogy combines three exciting books of The Reign of Peace series and contains: False Peace Broken Bonds of Trust The Emperor's Game

Book excerpt: The Northeast Asian security environment is closely linked to Korea’s growth perspectives for the future. The spectacular rise of the South Korean economy in the past half century, also known as “Miracle on the Han River,” has been duly highlighted as one of the most successful cases of economic development worldwide. However, among the factors curbing South Korea’s growth perspectives has been, from the very beginning of its rise, the coexistence of the difficult neighbour to the North, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. While in the cold war this coexistence has been taken as inevitable, after the end of the cold war there were hopes to overcome this obstacle to further growth either through collapse or enhanced cooperation with the North, neither of which became reality. North Korea’s unprecedented aggressiveness and development of long-range ballistic missiles and nuclear devices, made this threat truly an international question with multilateral talks coming into existence as ad-hoc measures to cope with the nuclear crisis. It was then that the idea of a Northeast Asian Security Community was born. The contributions in this book discuss how a peaceful solution of the security problems could not only enhance stability of Korea’s economy and reduce the defense burden considerably (the so-called peace dividend), but would facilitate regional investments safer and regional solutions for common economic problems. When discussing the possibilities of a security framework or, in an institutionalized form, security community, in Northeast Asia, the authors in this volume are realistic as to not fall into the trap of wishful thinking, which so often has characterized approaches to North Korea resulting in disappointment. The past two years again saw the rising of tensions in Northeast Asia and the masterful way in which even an impoverished and isolated country can play its cards. While it seems a new ice age between the two Koreas is possible, nevertheless and maybe even more than ever the search for a stable security framework for Northeast Asia as a precondition for peaceful economic cooperation and development will go on. The chapters in this volume contribute to the ongoing debate to secure peace and development in Northeast Asia, making this book of interest to both academics and policy-makers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia, the Pacific Islands and the coasts of the Americas have long been studied separately. This essential single-volume history of the Pacific traces the global interactions and remarkable peoples that have connected these regions with each other and with Europe and the Indian Ocean, for millennia. From ancient canoe navigators, monumental civilisations, pirates and seaborne empires, to the rise of nuclear testing and global warming, Matt Matsuda ranges across the frontiers of colonial history, anthropology and Pacific Rim economics and politics, piecing together a history of the region. The book identifies and draws together the defining threads and extraordinary personal narratives which have contributed to this history, showing how localised contacts and contests have often blossomed into global struggles over colonialism, tourism and the rise of Asian economies. Drawing on Asian, Oceanian, European, American, ancient and modern narratives, the author assembles a fascinating Pacific region from a truly global perspective.

Book excerpt: On the red planet of Mars, a growing tension simmers between its inhabitants and the Earth. Led by General Zorak, a faction of Martians believes that the only way to secure their future is to invade Earth. However, Tarek, Zorak's idealistic son, sees the potential for collaboration rather than conflict. Despite the pressure from his father, Tarek, alongside his friends Kira, Mira, and Jax, embarks on a mission to persuade the Martian council that partnership with Earth is the key to a prosperous future. As Tarek and Kira work to present a compelling case for cooperation, they encounter internal resistance from Zorak and other council members, who are wary of Earth’s history. Tarek’s resolve is tested as he navigates family loyalties, friendship dynamics, and the weight of leadership. Through a series of challenges, including passionate debates, moments of levity, and personal conflicts, Tarek's determination to stop the impending attack on Earth grows stronger. With Kira's support, they develop a pilot program showcasing the benefits of collaboration, leading to a tense council meeting where they must confront Zorak and other skeptics.

Book excerpt: Historians have widely studied the late-nineteenth-century southern agrarian revolts led by such groups as the Farmers' Alliance and the People's (or Populist) Party. Much work has also been done on southern labor insurgencies of the same period, as kindled by the Knights of Labor and others. However, says Matthew Hild, historians have given only minimal consideration to the convergence of these movements. Hild shows that the Populist (or People's) Party, the most important third party of the 1890s, established itself most solidly in Texas, Alabama, and, under the guise of the earlier Union Labor Party, Arkansas, where farmer-labor political coalitions from the 1870s to mid-1880s had laid the groundwork for populism's expansion. Third-party movements fared progressively worse in Georgia and North Carolina, where little such coalition building had occurred, and in places like Tennessee and South Carolina, where almost no history of farmer-labor solidarity existed. Hild warns against drawing any direct correlations between a strong Populist presence in a given place and a background of farmer-laborer insurgency. Yet such a background could only help Populists and was a necessary precondition for the initially farmer-oriented Populist Party to attract significant labor support. Other studies have found a lack of labor support to be a major reason for the failure of Populism, but Hild demonstrates that the Populists failed despite significant labor support in many parts of the South. Even strong farmer-labor coalitions could not carry the Populists to power in a region in which racism and violent and fraudulent elections were, tragically, central features of politics.

Book excerpt: The British Isles have a long, rich and celebrated seafaring history stretching from the earliest times through the victories of Drake and Nelson, the voyages of discovery of Cabot and Cook and the defence of the realm by vessels of all types in the present century. Much of this history is recorded in literature and in museums but reaches its most tangible form in the large number of historical ships that have been preserved and are continually restored as monuments to a proud past. This lavish book explores 20 of the most celebrated and accessible ships and offers a comprehensive history of each vessel's design, construction, active service and subsequent restoration and preservation. Presented in order of each ship's launch date, each entry is written by the acknowledged expert on a particular vessel, gives full specification details and is sumptuously illustrated with contemporary photographs, historical illustrations and a full set of scale plans. In addition to the featured entries, an appendix presents all of the necessary contact details and opening times where applicable. The appendix also lists (and provides details for) other vessels of historical importance including a small number of working replicas such as the Matthew and the recently commissioned eighteenth-century frigate The Grand Turk, featured in the recent Hornblower television series. Principal vessels include: Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Trincomalee, SS Great Britain, Cutty Sark, RRS Discovery, HMS Warrior, HMS Belfast, HMY Britannia, HMS Alliance, HMS Cavalier, Gypsy Moth IV and HMS Plymouth.

Book excerpt: In the gripping conclusion to the Moonlit Desire series, Shadows of Eternity brings the saga of Tristan and Ethan to its climactic end. As the shadows—an ancient and malevolent force—rise once more, threatening to consume the world, Tristan and his allies must confront the prophecy that has loomed over them. This prophecy foretells a betrayal, a sacrifice, and a love that will endure beyond death. With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Tristan grapples with the loss of Ethan, whose sacrifice to stop the shadows has left a void in his heart. As the shadowy forces close in, secrets long hidden are unveiled, revealing the true nature of Ethan’s bloodline and its connection to the final battle. Loyalties are tested, alliances are strained, and trust is a fragile currency as Tristan must navigate a path filled with doubt and danger. At the center of it all, Tristan realizes that the key to defeating the darkness lies in the love he shared with Ethan—a love that transcends time, death, and the very forces of darkness itself. In the final moments, Tristan’s unwavering love for Ethan becomes the ultimate weapon against the shadows, proving that love, in its truest form, is more powerful than even the deepest darkness. With this realization, Tristan and his allies face the final battle, determined to restore light and peace to their world.
