Book excerpt: The Wheel of Time is now an original series on Prime Video, starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine! With Robert Jordan’s untimely passing in 2007, Brandon Sanderson, the New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn novels and the Stormlight Archive, was chosen by Jordan’s editor—his wife, Harriet McDougal—to complete the final volume in The Wheel of Time®, later expanded to three books. In A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and concluding novel in Jordan’s #1 New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series, the armies of Light gather to fight in Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle, to save the Westland nations from the shadow forces of the Dark One. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, is ready to fulfill his destiny. To defeat the enemy that threatens them all, he must convince his reluctant allies that his plan—as foolhardy and dangerous as it appears—is their only chance to stop the Dark One’s ascension and secure a lasting peace. But if Rand’s course of action fails, the world will be engulfed in shadow. Across the land, Mat, Perrin, and Egwene engage in battle with Shadowspawn, Trollocs, Darkfriends, and other creatures of the Blight. Sacrifices are made, lives are lost, but victory is unassured. For when Rand confronts the Dark One in Shayol Ghul, he is bombarded with conflicting visions of the future that reveal there is more at stake for humanity than winning the war. Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time® by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters. Book excerpt: What to do, where to go, who to turn to, when all-destroying loss makes you a stranger to yourself? From the London club scene to the dark heart of a New Mexican cult, this stunning memoir takes you deep inside the weirdness and recklessness of grief. Growing up in the prosperous English suburbs of the 1980s, Kelly has a happy life within a seemingly perfect family. When the shocking fallout from her father's secret past ends the world she knew, the pain drives her underground into a numbing circuit of sex, drugs, and dance music. Adrift and alone, she meets a man named John Twobirds - shaman, teacher, medicine man and cult leader. He can bring her back to life, he says, if she'll join his tribe in the desert, and become his fourteenth wife ...An astonishing true story set against the backdrop of the AIDS pandemic and the hedonism of the ecstasy era, Kelly Alder's debut is also a timeless chronicle of one woman's search for belonging.

Book Synopsis The Fourteenth Amendment and the States by : Charles Wallace Collins
Download or read book The Fourteenth Amendment and the States written by Charles Wallace Collins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE studies here presented are the outgrowth of a paper read before the Government Club of Harvard University in February, 1911. Some of them have within recent months appeared, in substantially their present form, in certain of the academic and legal journals. In the preparation of the statistical material the author has made no use of the current digests of deci sions, annotations to the Constitution, nor of the indices to the Supreme Court Reports, except by way of com parison of results. He has gone directly to the body of the Reports and given each case a personal examination. Much repetition will be found throughout the work. This may detract from its logical unity, but it is hoped that it may serve some purpose. The true nature of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is little known. The processes of its operation are intricate and complex. This reiteration, therefore, of certain salient features may not be amiss in serving to render more familiar a subject that, al though not new historically, has been scantily discussed. The author's thanks are due to the editors of the following periodicals for the courtesy of extending to him the copyright privileges for the use of the material vii VUl PREFACE in the chapters mentioned below: The American Law Review for Chapters V and VI; the Yale Law Journal for Chapter VII; the Columbia Law Review for Chapter VIII; and the South Atlantic Quarterly for Chapter X.
