Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South's Fourth Forest: Alternatives for the Future The third forest will continue to be the source of the timber harvested in the South during the rest of this century. The forest that will come after that - the South's fourth forest - can take almost any form desired. The changes now taking place in the third forest are cause for great concern. Our most recent surveys of forest resources show that net annual timber growth, after rising for decades, has begun to decline. Softwood timber removals are above net annual growth over large areas, and inventories are beginning to decrease. A similar situation is developing for hardwoods. If these recent trends continue, The preface to The South's Third Forest How It Can Meet Future Demands (southern Forest Resource Analy'sis Committee 1969) began: The analysis was developed to learn how the Sout-t achieved its vastly improved, if not wholly 'favorable, timber position over the past several decades and how this trend could be continued. In a general sense, this is also the basic purpose of the pres ent study. Concern about the timber situation in the South began in the early l9oo's, when it become evident that forests over much of the South were not regenerating after harvest. This con cern led to a series of national and regional analyses that provided an analytical basis for developing policies and pro grams to renew and sustain the South's timber resource. Book excerpt: "Southern forests provide innumerable benefits. Forest scientists, managers, owners, and users have in common the desire to improve the condition of these forests and the ecosystems they support. A first step is to understand the contributions science has made and continues to make to the care and management of forests. This book represents a celebration of past accomplishments, summarizes the current state of knowledge, and creates a vision for the future of southern forestry research and management. Chapters are organized into seven sections: "Looking Back," "Productivity," "Forest Health," "Water and Soils," "Socioeconomic," "Biodiversity," and "Climate Change." Each section is preceded by a brief introductory chapter. Authors were encouraged to focus on the most important aspects of their topics; citations are included to guide readers to further information."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Policy and Program Conference on "the South's Fourth Forest: Alternatives for the Future" I am pleased to be back in the South. I grew up in Arkansas, went to school there, and learned my basic forestry tromping around southeastern Arkansas on Crossett Company land. Reading the review draft on the South's fourth forest brought back a lot of memories about the early part of my career here in the South. L worked on two Ranger Districts where the first forest' had been clearcut by large lumber companies in the teens and twenties. In fact, as a practicing, on-the ground forester, I had a set of 1936 photos that I used regularly in Texas, and I could go into the woods and very vividly see the second forest' and how it developed over time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.

Book excerpt: The Southern Forest: Geography, Ecology, and Silviculture examines the forests of the South, providing a comprehensive description of the region from which most of the nation's wood for housing and paper will be grown and harvested in the future. It gives special attention the four factors of site - edaphic, biotic, climatic, and physiographic. It also includes over 200 photographs, an extensive listing of literature citations, and appendixes of tree, insect, and disease agents. With files of field notes and photographs, it takes the reader along to grasp the South's rich forests. Land managers will need no other reference to the soils, biotic components, climate or physiology of the region.

Book excerpt: Aimed at policy-makers and practitioners, this work looks at how local and indigenous communities can maintain the balance between their societies and their forest environments when faced with increasing external pressures, rising populations and growing demands for basic needs and cash. While efforts by governments or coporations to restore and manage forest environments are often non-existent or ineffective, there frequently exists, within communities who depend on forests, a wealth of knowledge about rational land use and environmental protection.
