Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church, Vol. 1 of 3 It gives the translators great pleasure to be able to place within reach of the English-speaking community, and the student of theology, the classical text-book of Church History of the Rev. John alzoe, D.D., Professor of Theology at the University of Freiburg. The want of such a book has been long felt and much deplored bv scholars generally, and by educators in particular. These acknowledge that Church History is, for the theologian, not simply a very valuable aid, but rather an independent science, and the foundation of his other ecclesiastical studies; and that even the profane historian, the jurist, the statesman, the man of letters, the artist, the philosopher, can not, for evident reasons, dispense with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 It has been pointed out that in the course of the Church's history there are two special eras of what is sometimes called "Symbolism," i.e. Creed-Making, or the composition of formularies of faith, - the fourth and fifth centuries, and the sixteenth. The reason for this is obvious. Each age was emphatically an age of religious controversy. After the victory of Constantine over Maxentius and the publication of the Edict of Milan by the joint Emperors Constantine and Licinius (A.D. 313), religious questions and discussions attained a publicity which had hitherto been impossible. There followed, of necessity, a period of definition of the Church's faith. The great Arian controversy had already begun when Constantine found himself sole ruler of the Roman Empire; and now questions were asked as to the meaning of the Church's creed which, when once formally raised, required a clear answer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters of Early English Church History The following Chapters are an expansion of Lectures which have been delivered to my Class, while we had Bede's 'History' before us with a view to the Theological Final School. Wishing to connect them, in their present form, with their original purpose, I have retained a few colloquial phrases, and a few local allusions, which seemed natural in addressing a number of Oxford students, of whom several were personally well known to me. The first or introductory Chapter is devoted to the history of the ancient British Church. The general subject of the rest of the volume is the Age of the Conversion of the Old-English people to Christianity: a great, though comparatively a brief period, extending but little beyond a century, and closing naturally with the death, in 709, of their greatest native Bishop, himself the evangeliser of those among them who, from a peculiar isolation, were the last to receive the Faith. My obligations to the 'Councils and Ecclesiastical Documents, ' edited by the late Mr. Haddan and by Professor Stubbs, will be apparent throughout these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church Teaching on Faith Life and Order This manual is designed to aid students of our English Church system. It may also be found useful to clergymen and others who have to conduct classes on the History and Doctrines of our Church, and who desire to follow the lines laid down by our Reformers. The need of some such manual has been widely felt, but it has not been easy to do exactly what was sought. Some of the topics touched upon are large and complicated, and brief utterances on them are liable to be misunderstood. The writers are conscious that in many respects they have fallen short of their own ideal, and that they may not have fulfilled the expectations and requirements of those whose interests they have at heart. But they have sought to face the varied aspects of this subject fairly, if not fully, and clearly, if not completely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England: Her Principles, Ministry, and Sacraments The Church's one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word: From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy Bride, With His own Blood He bought her, And for her life He died. Elect from every nation, Yet one o'er all the earth, Her charter of salvation One Lord, one Faith, one Birth; One Holy Name she blesses, Partakes one Holy Food, And to one hope she presses With every grace endued. Though with a scornful wonder Men see her sore opprest, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distrest, Yet saints their watch are keeping, Their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song. Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war, She waits the consummation Of peace for evermore; Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England, Vol. 1: A History for the People; The British and Anglo-Saxon Church Boleyn; to his passionate desire for a divorce from the stately Spanish princess. The wife of his youth; or to the vulgar greed of the same irresponsible monarch and his powerful satellites, which coveted the spoils of the glorious abbeys, and the long-accumulated wealth of the Benedictine and his brother servants of God. These vulgar passions were, after all, but very small influences in bringing about the change which passed over the Church of England - the change men call the Reformation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England: An Appeal to Facts and Principles She has a history; she is an entity of her own even as part of the Church Catholic; she has an extraordinary position in the world, and a great future if faithful, a great downfall if she is false to her opportunity. It is never a good Sign when a man is ashamed of his mother it is doubly disgraceful in times of stress and trial, and therefore it is of somewhat sinister omen that a determined attempt Should be made to belittle her claims and taunt her with her isolation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 4 Who would suppose, for instance, that while Burnet was yet alive, he had been admonished of an error into which he had fallen, in speaking of the Council of Trullo, (or in T ratio as it should rather be) as a council holden in the fifth century, whereas it took place, in reality, not till the very end of the seventh, or beginning of the eighth century? Still however the original mistake has been repeated again and again in the text, in various editions, and the correction reserved for the addenda or appendix at the very end of the work. In the present edition the text will be found to be corrected as it should be, and the correction sent to the author, omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of the Laws and Canons of the Church of England, From Its First Foundation to the Conquest, and From the Conquest to the Reign of King Henry VIII, Vol. 2 of 2: Translated Into English, With Explanatory Notes IN this, as in the former volume, much care has been taken to reprint faith'fully the text of J ohnson's translation of the canons, &c., and his notes upon them, all corrections and additions being made by marginal and foot notes within brackets. The corrections however of verbal errors, sup plied from the addenda of the first edition, are not so marked. Johnson's notes are referred to, as in the first edition, 'by letters of the alphabet, and those of the editor by asterisks, &c.; the latter series of note marks are in both volumes frequently accompanied by an accent to shew how much of Johnson's translation is to be compared with the original quoted in the editor's note. The translations of the second volume are all from Latin documents, and they have been compared throughout with the Concilia of Wilkins as containing the best text of the originals, but other texts are sometimes quoted to shew how far particular parts of J ohn son's translation are warranted by his own authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices.
