Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Spiritualism But the medium's contemporary dream state may itself be determined by a variety of causes including, probably, telepathic impressions, and might thus well contain a visualized impression of a deceased person derived from the mind, conscious or sub conscious, of one of the experimenters present. I feel, therefore, that, in spite of the stress laid on Materializations by a few Spiritualistic writers, I am entitled to ignore them in the present discussion on the grounds both of their insufficient credentials and of their irrelevance to the issue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Spiritualism In this, his posthumous work, Myers does not indeed disdain whatever support may be derived from the trance utterances and the physical phenomena. But in both directions the evidence has been SO multi plied since his death that it will be necessary to devote the bulk of this book to its discussion. Myers' peculiar contribution to the subject may be considered more brie y, not, indeed, as being less important, but because the nine years which have elapsed have brought nothing to strengthen his position. Brie y, Myers essayed to lift the whole problem of man's immortality to a higher level, and propounded an argument of far wider scope, whose cogency we are hardly yet in a position accurately to estimate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's World: A Treatise on Spiritualism Founded on Transcripts of Shorthand Notes Taken Down, Over a Period of Five Years, in the Scance-Room The classes at which these Teachings were recorded in short hand, as given by the direct voices of the teachers in spirit, were held about one month apart during this five-year period. The transcript of the Teachings was preserved carefully, and this book has been compiled and written in faithful observance of those transcripts, without the introduction of any mortal views. The reason these lessons were not published in the original transcript form was because, at different intervals, additions would be made to the various subjects covered in this work. In the compilation of this book, all of these Teach ings have been grouped arid so far as practicable repetitions have been avoided. We have presented these subjects in the order in which the spirit-world has advocated that they appear. Unlike most volumes on the subject of Spiritualism, this book is intended not simply to be read. Any one of the subjects could well be utilized as the foundation for an entire volume. Consequently, many good points are presented with considerable brevity. But where it is essential to impress the exact meaning upon the reader, these statements are supplemented by illustrations, and these illustrations - illuminating statements of fact - are distinctive in the Teachings. Naturally, these subjects are all closely related. And in the different parts of the book, it is often necessary to make specific reference to truths that also are covered in other parts. But this is done where those facts have special reference to the subject being treated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Religion We cannot properly understand things (men, events, beliefs, practices) unless we view them in their context, in the whole of which they are part, in the light of the preceding and following stages. The ape and the man are remarkably alike - or unlike - it depends upon the particular group of details (resemblances or differences) and the only critical estimate will be based upon both groups of evidence, and will refer the ape and the man to their environments and to their place in evolution. So, too, a religion (e.g. Christianity) may have remark able resemblances with other religions whether (1) now current, or (2) historically prior to it but it would be unwise to base an estimate upon those features alone or upon the differences alone. And if we proceed on these principles we must apply the same method to ourselves what we condemn in others may be virtually identical with something in ourselves, and what we think meritorious in our friends may be found in our foes. The fundamental resemblances will be obscured because of the fundamental differences, or vice versa. And if we pursue this further and compare men who are warmly enthusiastic and keenly zealous, we should find most interesting points of resemblance, so that the fiery religionist and the violent rationalist would have certain fundamental psychical similarities although their bodies of beliefs and practices might differ fundamentally. 0f. Again and again I put the task aside as not worthy to engage the time that might be occupied in serious studies, and it seemed that such a structure raised on such foundations might well be left to fall to pieces of its own inherent rottenness but on consideration of the following argu ments advanced by my friends I determined to undertake the task. If Christians had tho/roughly believed the Bible and acceptedits revelations in this regard, it may be that Modern Spiritual ism would never have been born. Now it must be stated that the author lays no claim to any phase of mediumship; he is but an humble student of the truth, and as this little book is sent out in the interest of the truth, free from all spirit of contro vetsy, he has no fears as to the ultimate results, whatever may be the opinion of bigots who are wise in their own conceit of the subject of which this book treats. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychic Philosophy as the Foundation of a Religion of Natural Law The writer of this book was one of the very large number of persons who, alive to the beauty of ideal Christian character, was quite unable to accept current forms of Christian dogma. While thus disturbed in mind he made the error of seeking not for Truth, but for the Truth, from the Chris tian Churches, from modern leaders of thought, and even from Oriental faiths, whose foundations he endeavoured to reach, and whose inner meaning he sought to understand. His attention was invited to the psychic phenomena, that have now attracted the incredulous or bewil dered notice of so many. He expected little from these things, and began the inquiry into them with entire and pronounced scepticism. But he was at last convinced that, whatever the explanation might prove to be, he was in presence of facts which promised solution to his difficulties, because these facts bear on the main problem - whether the human soul is but a name for the sum of vital functions, or has an objective existence, embodied and disem bodied. He has attempted in this book to sum marise the psychic facts and to show the inferences which seem to him to flow from them, in the hope that they may be of use to others. Book excerpt: In "A Defence of Modern Spiritualism," Alfred Russel Wallace, the outstanding biologist and co-founder of the idea of evolution, departs from his scientific foundations to address the increasing spiritualist motion of the 19th century. Wallace, mentioned for his highbrow interest and open-mindedness, makes a sturdy case in desire of spiritualism, a religion machine primarily based on connection with spirits. Wallace's book makes use of his private stories, studies, and testimonials to argue for the truth of spiritualist practices. Wallace, who's normally linked with clinical rigor, uses his analytical thoughts to investigate and guard spiritual reviews, difficult skeptics and striving to reconcile spiritualist ideas with contemporary scientific and theological perspectives. "A Defence of Modern Spiritualism" exemplifies Wallace's diversity as a thinker, demonstrating his willingness to have a look at unusual areas of information. While it may appear to be a departure from Wallace's evolutionary pursuits, the book shows his willpower to intellectual studies and his desire to recognize the various elements of the human revel in.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Religion in the Mind and Heart of Man Theological controversy, in the ordinary sense of the word, has in these pages been as much as possible avoided. A layman is neither qualified, nor disposed to thread the interminable maze. But, on the other hand, he is more at liberty than a clergyman of any Church or Sect can be, or ought to be, to say all, and exactly what he thinks. Some readers may complain, that positive conclusions have not been pushed further. But the object has been to labour on common ground, especially for the benefit of the young and uninstructed (for whom alone the author presumes to write), by showing in a popular manner, on how broad, solid, and immovable a foundation religious Faith, Hope, and Worship repose to cheer and fortify sincere and anxious hearts, whatever form of the Christian religion they may have embraced. It is plain, that this end must have been entirely frustrated, had the narrow tenets or interests of any particular Church, sect, or party, been directly or indirectly advocated or attacked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Modern Spiritualism I am well aware that my scientific friends are some what puzzled to account for what they consider to be my delusion, and believe that it has injuriously affected what ever power I may have once possessed of dealing with the philosophy of Natural History. One of them - Mr. Anton Dohrn - has expressed this plainly. I am informed that, in an article entitled Englische Kritiker und Anti Kritiker des Darwinismus, published in 1861, he has put forth the opinion that Spiritualism and Natural Selection are incompatible, and that my divergence from the views of Mr. Darwin arises from my belief in Spiritualism. He also supposes that in accepting the spiritual doctrines I have been to some extent influenced by clerical and reli gions prejudice. As Mr. Dohrn's views may be those of other scientific friends, I may perhaps be excused for entering into some personal details in reply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism Answered by Science The crucial tests applied by the skill and science of Mr. Crookes confirmed the results of a series of other experiments, conducted with care and caution, which had been instituted for the purpose of investigating if any and what of the alleged phenomena were real and, if real, whether they are physical or spiritual, natural or super natural. The conclusion from that patient inquiry has been, that many of the alleged phenomena are real, though some are delusions and others impostures that the Power dignified by the title of Spiritual, because attributed to the presence and action of spirits of the dead, is in fact a Psychic Force proceeding from the human structure and directed by the human intelligence.
