Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of American Nationality The authors hope that this "Short History of the American People" may serve the purposes of two classes of readers. They have aimed, in the first instance, to provide for college undergraduates pursuing an introductory course in American history, a general manual which will embody, in some measure at least, the enlarged knowledge and the new points of view made possible by the results of research in recent years. They believe also that this history will meet the requirements of the general reader who desires a comprehensive view of the subject within reasonable compass. For the student and the general reader alike, it is hoped that the bibliographical notes may point the way to more extended studies. The aim of the authors is not so much to present a balanced narrative of events, as to describe those movements and forces which have left their permanent impress upon the national character and institutions. The first volume (The Foundations of American Nationality, before 1789) deals with the molding of the varied European elements and the several detached colonies into an independent and united nation; the second (The Development of American Nationality, 1783 to the Present Time) deals with the development of the nation so formed. While any division of the subject matter of history occasions perplexity and disagreement, the authors believe that the character of the problems confronting the people of the time, and the character of the materials which the historian must employ, permanently differentiate the colonial period from the national, and that the two can best be treated by different men. In order, however, that each author might have full liberty to express his views, the volumes overlap for the period 1783 to 1789. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An elaborate scientific examination of the necessity of preserving the Union, from this prominent military engineer. Hunt posits a nation as a kind of organism suited to its environment and after an exhaustive examination of the North American geography and climate, concludes the fitness of a single nation built around the Mississippi Valley and bounded by each ocean; some of his biggest concerns are the twin problems of what he terms race and caste-- he devotes a number of pages to the unsuitability of the African 'tropical race' for the temperate North American climate and the racial superiority of whites."-- Description from Garrett Scott, bookseller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of exemplary writings from the debates over the ratification of the 1787 Constitution deals with the American constitutional founders' understandings of citizenship and civic virtue. Discussion of these debates is set in an analytical and historical context, addressing the rationales for and the nature of civic allegiance in liberal political regimes. Sinopoli analyzes the development of a distinctly liberal political psychology from its origins in John Locke, Adam Smith, and David Hume through the American founding and traces its implications for the current American polity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union Foundations: A Study of American Nationality as a Fact of Science As the following discussion of the scientific bases on which our nationality has rested and must rest, was written in September, 1862, the partial coincidence of certain views herein set forth with those embodied in a portion of the President's Message of December, 1862, must be regarded as a natural agreement, and as an evidence that these views are truthful and necessary results of candid study. The Editor's Table of Harper's Magazine, for February, 1863, contains a condensed re-casting, by an able hand, of many facts and views presented in this study, and I can but hope that the popular audience thus reached, as well as the readers of the following pages, may find therein, not only food for reflection, but new courage, and new hope, amid the gloom and distraction of a trying hour.
