Book Synopsis Transition Economies by : Aleksandr V. Gevorkyan
Download or read book Transition Economies written by Aleksandr V. Gevorkyan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study offers a comprehensive analysis of the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Providing full historical context and drawing on a wide range of literature, this book explores the continuous economic and social transformation of the post-socialist world. While the future is yet to be determined, understanding the present phase of transformation is critical. The book’s core exploration evolves along three pivots of competitive economic structure, institutional change, and social welfare. The main elements include analysis of the emergence of the socialist economic model; its adaptations through the twentieth century; discussion of the 1990s market transition reforms; post-2008 crisis development; and the social and economic diversity in the region today. With an appreciation for country specifics, the book also considers the urgent problems of social policy, poverty, income inequality, and labor migration. Transition Economies will aid students, researchers and policy makers working on the problems of comparative economics, economic development, economic history, economic systems transition, international political economy, as well as specialists in post-Soviet and Central and Eastern European regional studies.

Book excerpt: Because of the recent transition in the Soviet Union's leadership, scholars worldwide have found it necessary to reevaluate Soviet domestic and foreign policy. In this volume, prominent Japanese, U.S., and European experts examine changes within the USSR as well as Soviet reactions to changes in the rest of the world. They assess the immediate implications of change for such areas as technology, energy policy, and economic reform and deliver commentaries on current policy directions and historical backgrounds of Soviet policies. To commemorate its silver jubilee and to add the valuable perspective of Japanese Soviet-studies scholars to Western analyses, the Japan Institute of International Affairs held the symposium on which this volume is based.
Book Synopsis Georgia from National Awakening to Rose Revolution by : Jonathan Wheatley
Download or read book Georgia from National Awakening to Rose Revolution written by Jonathan Wheatley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Wheatley examines the tortuous process of regime change in Georgia from the first pro-independence protests of 1988 to the aftermath of the so-called Rose Revolution in 2004. It is set within a comparative framework that includes other transition countries, particularly those in the former Soviet Union. The book provides two important theoretical innovations: the notion of a regime, which is an under-theorized concept in the field of transition literature, and O'Donnell, Schmitter and Karl's notion of a dynamic actor-driven transition. The volume turns to the structural constraints that framed the transition in Georgia and in other republics of the former Soviet Union by looking at the state and society in the USSR at the close of the Soviet period. It examines the evolution and nature of the Georgian regime, and ultimately addresses the theoretical and empirical problems posed by Georgia's so-called Rose Revolution following the falsification of parliamentary elections by the incumbent authorities.
Book Synopsis Surviving Post-communism by : Kenneth Roberts
Download or read book Surviving Post-communism written by Kenneth Roberts and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do young people survive in the era of high unemployment, persistent economic crises and poor living standards that characterize post-communist society in the former Soviet Union? This work demonstrates how young people have managed to maintain optimism despite the very severe economic and social problems that beset the countries of the former Soviet Union. It reveals that in spite of all the hardship, the majority prefer the new uncertainties, and the merest prospect of the Western way of life, to the old guarantees.

Book Synopsis Fiscal Transition in Countries of the Former Soviet Union by : MissA. Cheasty
Download or read book Fiscal Transition in Countries of the Former Soviet Union written by MissA. Cheasty and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the uneven record of fiscal performance in the states of the former Soviet Union since independence. Deficits have come down rapidly, an important contribution to stabilization. Given, however, the unexpectedly severe revenue decline and limited financing, the stabilization was reached by sharp cuts in expenditure. The cuts were abrupt and not focused on transition goals, and the instruments used vitiated normal budgetary processes. Hence, benchmarks of fiscal success other than stabilization are elusive. Government intervention and subsidies remain important, social spending is inefficient, and there is little evidence in the budget of restructuring.
