Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests of Connecticut There is a reason why thousands of people from all over the world flock to Connecticut in the autumn to view nature's finest show. There is a reason why many of the world's producers of fine oak furniture, flooring, and paneling beat a path to Connecticut in search of raw materials. There is a reason why millions of people either come to Connecticut or stay in Connecticut to rest, relax, and recreate. There is a reason why so many species of wildlife, such as bear, fisher, bald eagle, turkey, coyote, and martin, have returned to Connecticut's landscape. There is a reason why so many people seek to nestle their homes in the natural beauty and serenity of Connecticut. Yes, there is something about Connecticut and I believe the something about Connecticut is our State's enduring treasure our forests. These forests form the backdrop to life in Connecticut and contribute so much to the quality of life here. This report is reassuring for the citizens of Connecticut: their beloved forests are healthy. But this report also raises a word or two of caution: the forests of Connecticut are in danger of being loved to death. Unchecked, our yearning to own and live in our own small piece of Connecticut's green treasure will eventually bring about a fundamental and very sad change. The very nature of our forests will change and the reasons that the forests of Connecticut are so special will diminish: less recreation, fewer wildlife, fewer forest products, and less natural beauty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Forestry, And, Forest Trees of Connecticut The section on Forest Trees of Connecticut was prepared some years ago. By our State Forester, in collaboration with Wilbur R. Mattoon of the U. S. Forest Service, and has been in use as a separate pamphlet. Most of the drawings of leaves and twigs were by Mrs. A. E. Hoyle Of the forest-service. The picture of the Charter Oak shown on the cover was made from the painting by Charles D. Brownell. The tree was a white oak, which, according to tradition, was saved from the original forest in 1636, at the request of the Indians. It stood near Dutch Point in Hartford, and was the hiding place for the charter of the Connecticut Colony during the Andros tyranny, in 1687. The tree blew over in a gale on August 21, 1856. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peoples State Forest: Typical of the Second Growth Forests of Connecticut The Peoples Forest is located in the town of Barkhamsted on the ridge east of the west branch of the Farmington River between Riverton and Pleasant Valley. It owes its name to the fact that it has been entirely given to the State through private subscriptions made to the Connecticut Forestry Association and gifts of land direct to the State. This forest is surrounded by country roads and may be easily reached from Riverton or Pleasant Valley. Local History "The Barkhamsted lighthouse" far from navigable water is said to derive its name from the fact that the stage driver of early days, when settlements were far apart, would cheer his passengers by pointing to the light from these cabins and facetiously calling it the lighthouse. The remains of the old road may still be seen just above the present road, Closely associated with this settlement is the well known story of Molly Barber. She was brought up in Wethersfield, but after being thwarted in love by her father, made the boast that she would marry the first man who proposed whether he were white, red or black. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood-Using Industries of Connecticut Connecticut is one of the most densely populated states of the Union. Its square miles are occupied by over a million inhabitants. A very large percentage of its people reside within two score manufacturing centers and depend directly upon indus trial employment for a livelihood. The various industries include nearly factories, with an invested capital of more than a third of a billion dollars, an annual output worth a like sum, and a payroll of some millions. A considerable number of these factories convert the raw material of the forest into finished products. The report of the lumber cut of the United States in 1910, prepared by the Bureau of the Census in coopera tion with the Forest Service, United States Department of Agri culture, shows that the Connecticut sawmills cut over board feet in that year. Part of the lumber made'in the State is shipped away, and of the total domestic consumption probably one-fourth IS utilized In rough lumber and In general construction. The total consumed by the Connecticut wood -using industries in 1910, including lumber purchased from other states, amounted to 110 feet. The amount of wood taken from the forests in forms other than lumber has been only roughly estimated, but the quantity of lumber annually milled in Connecticut has been determined for some years. This is the first attempt to follow the lumber from the sawmill through the factories. The information here presented shows the relations between the wood - using industries of Connecticut and her forests. It also shows to what extent the State's native resources are drawn upon to meet home requirements, and to what extent manufacturers draw from outside. This report is intended to answer the question of what becomes Of the seventy-two or seventy-three million feet of rough lum ber that are used each year in Connecticut's wood - using factories. It also discusses properties of the various woods that fit them for use in certain industries and the products made from these woods. It gives the average cost of lumber delivered at the factory, both home - grown and shipped - in material. The prices given, it must be remembered, are not market prices, but are merely an average computed from many different grades and forms of each kind of wood reported. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bristol, Connecticut: In the Olden Time "New Cambridge," Which Includes Forestville In the early history of the town Of Farmington, mention is made of that section now divided into the towns of Bristol and Burlington, under the general name of the West Woods. It was the resort of the white hunters of that early period, by virtue of a tféa'ty' with the Indians by which hunting and fishing rights-were to be equally enjoyed by whites and Indians; and so plentiful was the game in the forests which then covered the hills and valleys of Bristol and Burlington, that venison and bear meat sold at a very low price in the Farmington market. Dr. Noah Porter said in an address at the celebration of the two hundredth anniversary of Farmington, in 1840, There are men now living, who remember when venison was sold in our streets at 2d the pound. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey of Diseases and Defects in Connecticut Forests The present condition of the forest stands of Connecticut is the result of hundreds of years of misuse. Successive clear cuttings for charcoal and fire wood have caused deterioration of both the stand and the site. Logging has been carried on with little regard for the future stand. The desirable trees have been cut taking everything if the stand was good, or, if poor, leaving the undesirable species and the deformed and rotten trees. The added disaster of chestnut blight has further depleted the growing stock. As a result the stands are understocked and contain many undesirable trees. Since most of the state owned forests have been planted with conifers wherever there were open areas, the chief silvicultural problem facing the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 was that of improving existing stands. These are largely composed of hardwoods or hardwoods in mixture with softwoods in the younger age classes. The task of choosing crop trees brought to light the prevalence of Nectria cankers and other diseases and defects. In the winter of 1934-35 a survey of disease conditions in Connecticut forests was started. The purpose of this survey was to determine (1) the kind, abundance and distribution of diseases and defects in the forests of the State and (2) the effect of species, composition, age and other stand and site characteristics on the prevalence of diseases and defects. The results indicate the present condition of the stands examined and should serve as a basis for determining (a) the best method for reducing damage from diseases and defects in the present stands and (b) by comparison with future studies, the degree Of effectiveness of present treatments in lessen ing damage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York and Honduras Company: Incorporated Under the Laws of Connecticut In presenting to public attention "The New York and Honduras Company," it is proper that some explanations be offered of the character and advantages of the Concession granted it by the Republic of Honduras, as well as of the business ready for immediate, and, it is believed, profitable prosecution. The territory embraced in the Concession to the company has a frontage on the Carribean Sea of about 50 miles, and extends inland, as stated, 45 miles, making an area of some 2,250 square miles, or 1,440,000 acres. In extent it is something larger than the State of Delaware. Very little of this territory is valueless, much the larger proportion of it being covered by primeval forests; and all authorities agree in stating that these forests of Northern Honduras are among the most valuable in the world. Other portions of it are alluvial plains, among which may particularly be specified the great Plain of Sula, lying at the mouth of the Ulua River. Three centuries ago, under the Spanish dominion, this plain was celebrated for its fertility, and was then, and for many years later, the seat of vast estates, covered with herds of cattle; but the inroads of buccaneers and the ravages of foreign and internecine wars relegated it to a condition of nature, and it thus remains, awaiting only the touch of industry and enterprise to bloom again among the gardens of the earth.
