Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Trees: With Illustrations In presenting these notes on Forest Trees, with the accompanying illustrations, there is no intention of dealing with the subject from a strictly scientific point of view. Comprehensive works of that character, by competent authorities, are in circulation, and no useful purpose would be served, therefore, by traversing over ground which is already well covered. Our main purposes are to give a description of Forest Trees in a concise, and in what will, it is hoped, prove to be an intelligible and popular form, and also to picture, by means of photography, the actual appearance of these trees in their growth and habit. In some standard works the details are carefully defined, but there is no correspondingly good view as a whole of the specimen tree. "Yet what tree lovers want," wrote a famous American author, "is something that represents "the meaning, the character, the expression of a "tree, as a kind and as an individual." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arboriculture or a Practical Treatise on Raising and Managing Forest Trees, and on the Profitable Extension of the Woods and Forests of Great Britain During the present century, not only have changes taken place, to some extent, in the Opinions of writers on the best mode of cultivation and subsequent management of our timber trees, but in several instances the trees them selves, with respect to some of the most common and useful species in cultivation, are changed, and are found to be less hardy and ill adapted to the climate of North Britain. This is more especially the case with the Scotch Pine and the Larch, and it arises from the importation, for many years past, of large supplies of foreign seed grown in warm districts on the Continent, which produce plants so tender that in this country they form a very precarious crop. They offer us refuge: a place to play, a place to think. They are the generous providers of timber and energy. They let us dream of other ways of living. Yet we now face a future where taking a walk in the woods is consigned to the tales we tell our children. Immersing himself in the beauty of woodland Britain, Peter Fiennes explores our long relationship with the woods and the sad and violent story of how so many have been lost. Just as we need them, our woods need us too. But who, if anyone, is looking out for them?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trees of Old England: Sketches of the Aspects, Associations, and Uses of Those Which Constitute the Forests, and Give Effect to the Scenery of Our Native Country The following chapters appeared originally in a Magazine which has for its chief aim the diffusion of moral and sacred truth, and is always glad to have this done through the medium of illustrations drawn from nature, - that second Book of God, which is everywhere a commentary upon the first and greatest. They make not the slightest preten sion to a scientific character, seeking, like their forerunners on the Little Things of Nature, sim ply to set forth, in a plain and easy manner, some few of the beautiful and refreshing truths connected with the foresters of Old England. If received in the kindly spirit which it is hoped they may aid in diffusing and encouraging, they may probably be followed by a second series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Forestry in Britain: Its Decline and Revival The utility of forests to a nation is one of the economic factors to its well-being which has been brought to an unforeseen and unexpected prominence during the waging of the World War. And perhaps to no other European nation has this unlooked-for develop ment proved so startling, because so totally un expected, as to ourselves. Forestry in its general aspects as it affects our country both in peace and war is a branch of economic industry of which the British public has known very little in the past. And it is perhaps not surprising that they Should have remained in ignorance of its importance. For we have no forests in Britain in the sense in which the forest is understood in Europe and elsewhere in the world. We have woodlands, and exceedingly pretty they are, as we all know. From the point of View of the picturesque few things are more beautiful than the British woodland, with its old gnarled trees or tapering heavily branched firs and pines and latches; its open glades revealing stretches of green sward, of bracken, or a tangle of bramble, brier. Book excerpt: A beautiful hardcover anthology of stories by a brilliant and surprising mix of classic and contemporary writers who have been inspired by trees Trees have starred in stories ever since Ovid described the nymph Daphne’s metamorphosis into a laurel, and the landscape of literature has long been enlivened by wild woodlands, sacred groves, and fertile orchards. This delightful collection ranges from Ovid to Austen and from Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest (via Thomas Love Peacock’s Maid Marian) to Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Here are forest-haunted fairy tales both classic (the Brothers Grimm) and inventively retold (Angela Carter). There is room in these woods for comedy as well as terror, in Stella Gibbons’s Cold Comfort Farm, and Alexander McCall Smith’s “Head Tree.” Notable writers from around the world contribute arboreal fiction—from South Africa, Finland, France, Zimbabwe, Russia, Martinique, and India, as well as Britain, Ireland, Canada, and America. From Daphne du Maurier’s “The Apple Tree” to R. K. Narayan’s “Under the Banyan Tree,” the sheer range of stories in these pages will leave readers refreshed and dazzled. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket.

British Forestry; Being Two Essays With Notes The science of forestry, however, has only been known for some two hundred years, yet its great importance is seen when we consider what takes place in every country as it becomes civilised. Whilst in barbarous times men are content to live upon the wild fruits of the forests and plains, the spoils of the chase, the food to be obtained by trapping and fishing, and what can be wrested from neighbouring tribes or travel lers by force of arms; as soon as they gain ideas of civilisation they clear a space amidst the trees of the forest to build a collection of dwellings and to grow corn and other food and provender in greater quantity than can be conveniently gathered in the wild state. Wood, moreover, is required for firing, to build houses, boats, and for many other purposes; so it comes to pass that the area around the settlement denuded of trees becomes greater and greater. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Forestry, Vol. 1 The Heathen - Although readers of a forestry journal usually know more about the weather than they wish, it is such a characteristic British institution that it would be unpatriotic not to mention it. So far as the North of England is concerned, the summer of 1906 has probably been one of the best for years. Sufficient heat and sufficient moisture, following a cold but not seriously frosty Spring, have produced a growth on all forest trees which we should imagine to be above the average; while newly planted trees which failed to grow had to excuse themselves on other ground than a dry season. In the South, more frosty and droughty conditions prevailed, and for once in a way this part of the country has been less favored than the North. However, it is probably safe to say that while better seasons may have been seen, there have also been a great many worse, and taking things all round, the forester has no serious cause for complaint against the weather of 1906.
