Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Vermont A resurvey of the timber resources in Vermont was made in 1965 and 1966 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, approximately 18 years after the initial forest survey. In this resurvey, as in the initial survey, the Northeastern Station received cooperation from the Vermont Department of Forests and Parks. The Department purchased the aerial photographs of the entire state that were used for the re survey and gathered information on the output of timber products. State field crews remeasured initial forest survey plots and established new plots on all State forest land. Personnel of the Green Mountain National Forest car ried out the part of the survey on National forest land. This report summarizes the timber-resource situation and the changes that have taken place since the initial sur vey. Trends in the supply of timber for forest-based indus tries are pointed out and projections of future timber supply are made. In this resurvey, a portion of the initial ground plots was remeasured to provide estimates of net annual timber growth and estimates of land-use change and to update the initial forest inventory volume. New ground plots were established for an independent second estimate. These two sets of estimates were weighted and combined to give the current estimates of forest area and timber volume. Sampling errors, which indicate reliability, are shown for most of the totals of the breakdowns of the new esti mates. Users of these resource data are cautioned to read carefully the definitions of terms and the section pertain ing to the reliability of the estimates in the appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest of the Green Mountain State Forests provide wood and other forest products, watershed protection, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, a setting for recreation, and much more. They have played a major role in the history and culture of Vermont. The early settlers found nearly all of the State covered by forests. The initial clearing of these woodlands was slow as most colonists established small subsistence farms. Forest clearing became widespread around 1800 as Vermont's farmers began supplying food and wool to a rapidly growing nation. The thousands of small farms created a strong agriculture - based economy. The city of Burlington, Vermont, became a major producer of timber during this time. By 1880, only about a third of Vermont remained forested. As early as 1845, George Perkins Marsh warned Vermont farmers about the damage that results from clearing forests. Eventually, those who once assumed that the State's forest resource was unlimited were faced with timber shortages. Soil erosion from farm land increased and silt now muddied creeks that once ran clear. And because of the rapid runoff of storm water, springs that previously flowed year round were dry during the summer. As Vermont's forests diminished, so did once abundant populations of important species of wildlife, for example, the beaver, black bear, white - tailed deer, wild turkey, and wolf. In the town of Barnet there are several good pine lots which have been thinned as marked by the Department In Windham, Windsor and Orange counties in co-operation with the County agents, the Department has inspected numerous wood lots and given personal advice to the owners. In the town of Middlesex a large lumber Operation, which has already extended over several years, has been made with strict adherence to the marking of a forester. In the same way extensive Operations are nowbeing conducted in Duxbury, and in other places. It is safe to estimate that at least acres of private land, aside from plantations, are being managed under the foregoing offer, and that over one million board feet a year is being so cut. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vermont, the Land of Green Mountains Long, long ago, so long ago that nobody knows just when or where it was given, the name Green mountains was bestowed upon the mountain range that extends through the State of Vermont from its southern to its northern border. The most that is known concerning the origin of this name is that it was given by the French, the first Europeans to visit this region. If Samuel Champlain, the discoverer of these mountains, gave them a name, he did not record that fact in his journals, which were kept with much care. It is more probable that some French soldier sailing southward over Lake Champlain on a warlike expedition into the Mohawk country, or some pious Jesuit priest traveling by canoe toward the Indian encampments, in the hope of converting the aborigines to the Christian faith, gazed with admiration on the nearer hills and the more distant peaks, and gave to them the natural and appropriate name, the Green mountains. We use the English phrase for the mountains, but the French term is preserved in the name of the State, Vermont - Verd Mont - thanks to Dr. Thomas Young of Philadelphia, at whose suggestion the name was given. And they are the green mountains in very truth, with the verdure of meadow and pasture land on their lower slopes, and the verdure of deciduous trees and evergreen forests on their higher slopes and summits. This mountain barrier, taking toll of the moisture-laden clouds that )ass over its summits from the ocean, keeps this highland region well watered and its verdure fresh and beautiful. The Green mountains - how much this name suggests to the weary toiler in the noisy, grimy city! The very name comes to the hot and stifling atmosphere of a great metropolis with an alluring sound. It suggests the green that means the abundant bounty and varied charm of nature; the green of upland meadows, the green of the forests, stretching far away over the slopes of the everlasting hills; the green that denotes life and promotes life and health. It suggests beautiful drives through shaded ways, beside which mountain streams go laughing and singing down to the valleys, over moss-covered rocks and shining pebbles, here becoming a cascade wreathed with mist, there an angry torrent, then spreading out into a wide and placid basin between green meadows. Book excerpt: In this second edition of their classic text, Klyza and Trombulak use the lens of interconnectedness to examine the geological, ecological, and cultural forces that came together to produce contemporary Vermont. They assess the changing landscape and its inhabitants from its pre-human evolution up to the present, with special focus on forests, open terrestrial habitats, and the aquatic environment. This edition features a new chapter covering from 1995 to 2013 and a thoroughly revised chapter on the futures of Vermont, which include discussions of Tropical Storm Irene, climate change, eco-regional planning, and the resurgence of interest in local food and energy production. Integrating key themes of ecological change into a historical narrative, this book imparts specific information about Vermont, speculates on its future, and fosters an appreciation of the complex synergy of forces that shaped this region. This volume will interest scholars, students, and Vermonters intrigued by the state's long-term natural and human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Forestry During the last twenty years the general interest in forestry has grown with remarkable rapidity in all parts of our country. The federal government has set aside large forest reserves, and several states have established reservations or parks. The private owners of large tracts of forest lands are employing trained foresters to care for their property, and an improvement in the smaller holdings is everywhere noticeable. Forestry is taught in two special schools in America, and elementary courses on the subject are given in several colleges and preparatory schools. A desire has been expressed to introduce this useful and interesting study into our public schools and country homes, and this volume is an attempt to provide a book on the subject which shall satisfy this demand. In keeping with this purpose there has been no attempt to write a textbook or manual of forestry; but an effort has been made to present in simple, non-technical language some of the general principles underlying the science, and to state the methods which are employed and the objects to be attained in the practice of forestry. Early association with the well-kept forests of Germany, observations made in the widely differing forest districts of our own country, and three years' experience in teaching forestry have helped to make the responsible task of preparing this book a pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Forestry, Vol. 1: The Forest Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of the first half of "A Primer of Forestry," and to recommend its publication as Bulletin No. 24, Part I, of this Division. The present part ("The Forest") deals with the units which compose the forest, with its character as an organic whole, and with its enemies. It may be said to sketch the foundation of the practice of forestry and of forest policy. Part II will be entitled "Practical Forestry," and will deal with the practice of forestry, with work in the woods, with the relations of the forest to the weather and the streams, and will conclude with a brief description of forestry at home and abroad. For many of the illustrations of Part I, I am indebted to the kindness of several gentlemen not connected with this Division.
