Book excerpt: Before the Ford Capri arrived in 1969, GT cars had tended to be expensive, temperamental, impractical and rarefied. Ford decided there was no reason why a four-seater coupe couldn't look stunning and go like a rocket (with the right engine) yet be as easy and cheap to run as a Ford Escort. Little wonder that the slogan they used in 1969 to launch ......

Book excerpt: Inspired by the success of the Ford Mustang “pony car” in the USA, Ford UK launched “The Car You Always Promised Yourself” in 1969 and it was an instant hit, with its long bonnet, sleek 2+2 coupé body, and low stance. For 1974, Ford launched the Capri II, with a new smooth body style, engines ranging from 1300 to 3000cc, and a plush Ghia version of the 3-litre model. In 1978 came the Capri Mk3 with yet more refinement and a four-headlamp nose. These classic Fords now have an almost fanatical following, supported by some very active owner’s clubs. Good examples are eagerly sought, and with prices rising restoration has become a very viable proposition. An astonishing number of variants of the Capri Mk2 and Mk3 were offered, so they really need to be identified. Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk II & Mk III, companion to our 2017 title Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk I, does the job, taking the reader right through the production period and pinning down the correct factory specifications, equipment and finishes across the range. This information is backed up by 300 specially commissioned colour photographs of outstanding examples of the cars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the success of the Ford Mustang “pony car” in the US, Ford UK launched “The Car You Always Promised Yourself” in 1969. It was an instant hit. There was an almost bewildering range of specs and trims, from L to XLR. An upgrade in 1972 introduced the overhead-camshaft Pinto engine to the 1600 and 2000 models, along with a front-end facelift and a new dash layout. Not to mention a 1300cc four-cylinder to a 3-litre V6. Thirty-nine incredible variants of the Mk1 Capri were released at launch. Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk1 takes you through the production period and pins down the correct factory specifications, equipment and finishes across the range, including the RS3100 and the factory “specials”. This information is backed up by specially commissioned color photography of 10 outstanding examples of the cars. You'll love the detail in production changes, dates and numbers, engine and chassis numbers, and aftermarket specials - convertibles by Abbott and Crayford, and performance Capris including the Broadspeed Bullitt and the Uren Comanche. There is also information on Capris built outside the UK. This is the most comprehensive guide on the Capri Mk1 that has ever even been attempted. It's thorough enough to satisfy the most ardent enthusiast for these stylish and desirable cars, and detailed enough to provide answers to questions about originality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOHN is brought up on an isolated farm near York, spends his spare time birdwatching, lives with an unsympathetic stepfather and loving mother, and attends Hull University as the government pays his expenses. He worries about serious relationships with girls and has no idea of what career to follow. His experience so far is as a farm hand and a hospital porter. A letter he finds at home confirms his biological father is alive but has no intention of helping him. On Bonfire Night 1965 (Guy Fawkes Night), during his final undergraduate year, he meets a fellow student, JEAN-LOUISE, and a romantic relationship develops. In many ways she is different from John; she is a town girl, brought up by loving parents, is an only child, has opposing politics and knows what she wants to be – a fashion buyer for Marks & Spencer. The obstacle is her mother is ill with muscular dystrophy and she must help take care of her parents. She surprises John by encouraging his birdwatching. John joins Ford of Britain as a graduate trainee and after an uncertain start, is placed in industrial relations and decides to study for a graduate degree with the Institute of Personnel Management. He also discovers more about his real father. What happens to the couple during the subsequent 10 years as they navigate their careers, have to deal with events that take place in Britain during the period and manage personal issues at home, are the subjects of this book. There is panic buying during the 1974, 3-day working week, the affects on home life of Britain's entry into the Common Market, annual inflation driven above 25 percent in part because of trade union militancy, and many other national incidents. A unique feature of the novel is the use of bird species to illustrate human behavior and character. At the end of each chapter there is an illustration of the featured bird from that chapter to provide a summary of the bird's appearance and habitat in case the reader is interested. The novel blends British history, ornithology, success at work, discrimination against women and the challenges of home life into a single story.

Book excerpt: Since 1945 Ford has dominated the British car industry. Ford's UK operation, given a high degree of autonomy by Henry Ford, produced models that gave sports car handling at family saloon prices. Despite the success of the UK operation, Ford decided to base Ford of Europe in Germany. This book follows the full story of the cars and the company in the UK, from the post-war high to the decline and final death knell, the end of Fiesta production in 2001.

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of a successful, ground-breaking, range of sporting Ford cars. From 1969, when the 'Car You Always Promised Yourself' was introduced, and for nearly twenty years after that, the Capri range set new engineering, styling and marketing standards. In that period, nearly two million Capris were sold, and Ford's rivals struggled to match it. Graham Robson's affectionate narrative covers the complete history of these versatile machines - not only in the showrooms and in the marketplace, but on the race tracks where so many successes were gained.

Book excerpt: When the 3-litre Capri was launched in 1969 with its no-nonsense handling and roadholding, plus its impressive performance, the car was singled out from the other bland and anonymous saloons of the late 1960s. Capris were straightforward, easy to drive and simple to maintain, and their popularity has been sustained largely because of this. Their simplicity of design and inherent ruggedness makes them ideal candidates for do-it-yourself restoration projects. The booming owners' club movement and the continuing availability of spare parts ensures that these cars will have a strong following for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up as a child in the ''80s had its ups and downs - it's perhaps the one decade that, more than any other, begets groans of, ''oh, what were you thinking?'' Those 10 years saw some huge changes - pop music went electronic, yuppies ruled the financial world, and fashion was never the same again. Neither was the car. Yes, despite some four-wheeled disasters, the ''80s still had plenty of cool cars. The petrol heads of the time lusted after Magnum P.I.''s Ferrari 308; they salivated over the Ferrari Daytona and Testarossa from Miami Vice, they watched ''Back to the Future'' in cinemas across the country, mesmerised at the sight of the Doc''s De Lorean (surely the ultimate in customisation?). Other 80s supercars included Porsche''s peerless 911, the original Audi Quattro (a car resurrected on current U.K. television in the show Ashes to Ashes) and the Ford Capri SLE 71R driven by Terry McCann in Minder... the list goes on. Now, 'The Best of Car' takes you back to the days when cars were flash, angular and mean. It''s time to don the shades and head out for a cool cruise down the strip. Flick through the glossy pages of what became the bible for aspiring car enthusiasts in the 80s - the only motoring magazine that reflected the true age of excess, and relive those long-forgotten dreams.
