Book excerpt: The tales of the Food Crew characters bring healthy eating to a new level of interest for children and adults alike! Wilf Watermelon finds out how he can learn to float, Gracie Grape discovers which Food Group she belongs to, and Olly Orange is so happy to finally find that, after all, there can be words that rhyme with his name. Caspar Carrot is delighted that all he needs is a bath to join the Leader of the Fruit and Vegetables, Fiva Day and also that he grew from a seed planted under the soil. Charlie Carb shows Paddy Potato that people need starchy foods to provide them with energy. The Food Crew stories have been designed to complement the training provided by Opti-me Limited (www.thefoodcrew.org.uk), Good Nutrition for Active Children. These will encourage children to experiment with new foods and are underpinned by the Balance of Good Health principles. Each book has a task embedded, such as using the watermelon fruit to make an iced lolly or smoothie and then placing the hollowed out shell into water to see it float, or rhyming words with Olly as there are no English words for "orange." Children can identify with Gracie Grape as she is unsure which group she belongs to, but Fiva Day gives her lots of clues for her to work it out and join the friends. A wonderful introduction to good nutrition written in poetry and prose with integral positive health messages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Monk’s Tale: Way Stations on the Journey, Father Malloy carries forward the story of his professional life from when he joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1974 to his election as president of Notre Dame. His journey in this volume begins with the various administrative responsibilities he undertook on the seminary staff and in the theology department during his early years as an administrator and teacher, and continues through his tenure as vice-president and associate provost, up to the process that led to his selection as Notre Dame’s sixteenth president. He reveals his day-to-day responsibilities and the challenges they presented as well as the ways in which his domestic and international travel gave him a broader view of the opportunities and issues facing higher education. Less time-bound than the first volume, this second volume of Father Malloy's memoirs provides an account of his many commitments as a teacher, scholar, and pastor; as a staff person in an undergraduate residence hall; and as a board member in a wide variety of not-for-profit organizations. His account includes a chapter devoted to his fifteen years as a participant in the process that led to Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Pope John Paul II’s apostolic constitution on Catholic higher education, and its implementation in the United States. Disarming in its candor, laced with anecdotes, and augmented with photographs, Monk’s Tale: Way Stations on the Journey captures the personality and tenacity of a young priest as he assumes ever greater responsibilities on a path toward the presidency of Notre Dame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The army marine field is a little known part of the army by both the civilians and the many soldiers. People think of the combat arms (infantry, armor, and artillery) and while they are the heart of the army, there are other branches without which the combat arms would cease to be an effective fighting force. Arguably, the most important element ensuring that the combat arms have beans and bullets is the Transportation Corps. The motto of the Transportation Corps is Spearhead of Logistics because Nothing happens until something moves. In my years as an army mariner, I have had many interesting and sometimes humorous experiences. My experiences are nothing compared with those of other army mariners. This book is not just about my experiences, but of other sea-going sailors as well. Some of the stories are hilarious, and I believe all are interesting. The book is divided into three elements. The heart of the book is the Sea Tales, but Mr. Richard Killblane, the Army Transportation Corps historian graciously provided me with many fascinating interviews of army mariners conducted by personnel in his office. The histories of many army watercraft companies are the final elements of the book and provides the reader with the differences of watercraft units and their missions. I have found my own experience to be very interesting and rewarding. I recall one day working on the engine room logbook, sitting at the galley table and glancing out of the door at the water in Skiffs Creek and thinking of how fortunate I was to be sitting there and not working in an office. I have had a wide variety of duties in my twenty-two year career, but nothing compares with working on the water. I can relate to what Samuel Clemmons wrote in his book, Life on the Mississippi, For I loved the profession far better than any I have followed since. I feel that says it all. I am now retired, but I have the memories of my experiences.

Cloran has spent his life at sea and is set to retire. He hopes to marry his long-suffering fiancée Adaire, but his hopes are dashed when King Bozin sends him on one final journey to the far-flung icy island city of Miotes. This time, however, the Sea is jealous of Cloran, and will never give him up to Adiare freely. Alas, Cloran has no choice, and accepts the mission begrudgingly. "One final journey," he tells himself. No matter what happens, it will be his last. Join Cloran, First Mate Lenny, Greaves, Darrell, Turner, Mallory, Richards and Jenkins as they navigate Wavegrazer through icy channels, floating castles, magical islands inhabited with faerie women and deadly reefs patrolled by the evil man-killing crab, Krackaman.

Book excerpt: County Kilkenny abounds in folk tales, myths and legends and a selection of the best, drawn from historical sources and newly recorded local reminiscence, have been brought to life here by local storyteller Anne Farrell.Kilkenny is the place where, legend has it, St Evin and St Molin once had to have their dispute settled by a shoal of fish; where the infamous Countess of Ormond brought fear and terror to the people of Grannagh; and where an imprudent local man decided to find out if the supposedly bottomless ‘Kerry holes’ would live up to their reputation. It is also said to be the home of a plethora of strange and magical creatures and stories abound of encounters with fairies, ghosts, banshees, shape-shifters and an army of cats who fought an epic battle near Dunmore Caves. From age-old legends and fantastical myths, to amusing anecdotes and cautionary tales, this collection is a heady mix of bloodthirsty, funny, passionate and moving stories. It will take you into a remarkable world where you can let your imagination run wild.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Categorized as the first attempt by a Canadian-born author at historical fiction, Wacousta, by John Richardson, is a Gothic story about Pontiac's War. The author described the 1763 uprising which was led by Pontiac, chief of the Ottawa Indians, at Fort Detroit. In the author's evocative depiction, Pontiac's campaign against Fort Detroit is planned by the mystifying Wacousta, a Byronic anti-hero whose desire for revenge against the fortress commander results in madness. Its themes include prophecy and opposites, such as manliness vs. effeminacy, wilderness/wildness vs. civilization, sensibility vs. compassion, and the natural vs. the supernatural. This suspenseful novel creates a world of illusion and panic in which justification is vague and the boundary between hierarchy and anarchy undefined. Despite its stressed sentimentalism, the novel has been treated as a seminal work in the development of a Canadian literary sensibility. The work is also often claimed as the first Canadian novel.

Book excerpt: A wildly hilarious and irreverent memoir of a globe-trotting life lived meal-to-meal by one of our most influential and respected food critics As the son of a diplomat growing up in places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, Adam Platt didn’t have the chance to become a picky eater. Living, traveling, and eating in some of the most far-flung locations around the world, he developed an eclectic palate and a nuanced understanding of cultures and cuisines that led to some revelations which would prove important in his future career as a food critic. In Tokyo, for instance—“a kind of paradise for nose-to-tail cooking”—he learned that “if you’re interested in telling a story, a hair-raisingly bad meal is much better than a good one." From dim sum in Hong Kong to giant platters of Peking duck in Beijing, fresh-baked croissants in Paris and pierogi on the snowy streets of Moscow, Platt takes us around the world, re-tracing the steps of a unique, and lifelong, culinary education. Providing a glimpse into a life that has intertwined food and travel in exciting and unexpected ways, The Book of Eating is a delightful and sumptuous trip that is also the culinary coming-of-age of a voracious eater and his eventual ascension to become, as he puts it, “a professional glutton.”
