Book excerpt: “A deep dive into the world of Flat Earth conspiracy theorists . . . that brilliantly reveals how people fall into illogical beliefs, reject reason, destroy relationships, and connect with a broad range of conspiracy theories in the social media age. Beautiful, probing, and often empathetic . . . An insightful, human look at what fuels conspiracy theories.” —Science Since 2015, there has been a spectacular boom in a centuries-old delusion: that the earth is flat. More and more people believe that we all live on a pancake-shaped planet, capped by a solid dome and ringed by an impossible wall of ice. How? Why? In Off the Edge, journalist Kelly Weill draws a direct line from today’s conspiratorial moment, brimming not just with Flat Earthers but also anti-vaxxers and QAnon followers, back to the early days of Flat Earth theory in the 1830s. We learn the natural impulses behind these beliefs: when faced with a complicated world out of our control, humans have always sought patterns to explain the inexplicable. This psychology doesn’t change. But with the dawn of the twenty-first century, something else has shifted. Powered by Facebook and YouTube algorithms, the Flat Earth movement is growing. At once a definitive history of the movement and an essential look at its unbelievable present, Off the Edge introduces us to a cast of larger-than-life characters. We meet historical figures like the nineteenth-century grifter who first popularized the theory, as well as the many modern-day Flat Earthers Weill herself gets to know, from moms on vacation to determined creationists to neo-Nazi rappers. We discover what, and who, converts people to Flat Earth belief, and what happens inside the rabbit hole. And we even meet a man determined to fly into space in a homemade rocket-powered balloon—whose tragic death is as senseless and absurd as the theory he sets out to prove. In this incisive and powerful story about belief, Kelly Weill explores how we arrived at this moment of polarized realities and explains what needs to happen so that we might all return to the same spinning globe.

Book excerpt: Contrary to popular belief fostered in countless school classrooms the world over, Christopher Columbus did not discover that the earth was round. The idea of a spherical world had been widely accepted in educated circles from as early as the fourth century B.C. Yet, bizarrely, it was not until the supposedly more rational nineteenth century that the notion of a flat earth really took hold. Even more bizarrely, it persists to this day, despite Apollo missions and widely publicized pictures of the decidedly spherical Earth from space. Based on a range of original sources, Garwood's history of flat-Earth beliefs---from the Babylonians to the present day---raises issues central to the history and philosophy of science, its relationship to religion and the making of human knowledge about the natural world. Flat Earth is the first definitive study of one of history's most notorious and persistent ideas, and it evokes all the intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual turmoil of the modern age. Ranging from ancient Greece, through Victorian England, to modern-day America, this is a story that encompasses religion, science, and pseudoscience, as well as a spectacular array of people and places. Where else could eccentric aristocrats, fundamentalist preachers, and conspiracy theorists appear alongside Copernicus, Newton, and NASA, except in an account of such a legendary misconception? Thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating, Flat Earth is social and intellectual history at its best.

Book excerpt: Christians are increasingly challenged with evolutionary theories as the only models for the origins and history of the universe. But is there any valid scientifically testable alternative? Now available in trade paper, More Than a Theory offers a comprehensive, testable creation model. This fascinating book responds to the recent, well-publicized challenges from aggressive atheists who deny the existence of a Creator. It also reminds the scientific community of what constitutes good science and supplies Christians with the scientific information they need to defend their conviction that the Creator is the God of the Bible. Complete with appendices that put competing models for creation and/or evolution to the same kinds of tests, More Than a Theory is a bold and brave work of apologetics that will stir profitable discussion in both the scientific and the religious realms.

Book excerpt: Much may be gathered, indirectly, from the arguments in these pages, as to the real nature of the Earth on which we live and of the heavenly bodies which were created for us. The reader is requested to be patient in this matter and not expect a whole flood of light to burst in upon him at once, through the dense clouds of opposition and prejudice which hang all around. Old ideas have to be gotten rid of, by some people, before they can entertain the new; and this will especially be the case in the matter of the Sun, about which we are taught, by Mr. Proctor, as follows: “The globe of the Sun is so much larger than that of the Earth that no less than 1,250,000 globes as large as the Earth would be wanted to make up together a globe as large as the Sun.” Whereas, we know that, as it is demonstrated that the Sun moves round over the Earth, its size is proportionately less. We can then easily understand that Day and Night, and the Seasons are brought about by his daily circuits round in a course concentric with the North, diminishing in their extent to the end of June, and increasing until the end of December, the equatorial region being the area covered by the Sun’s mean motion. If, then, these pages serve but to arouse the spirit of enquiry, the author will be satisfied.

Book excerpt: Is the Earth flat or spherical? There is only one way to find out the truth. Just go up there in the orbit of Earth, see it for yourself, and then come back to tell us the story. You may always rely on everything that others claim, officially or not, that the Earth is flat or spherical, but when all their statements and proofs remain inconclusive, since they did not go up there in the orbit of Earth to see it themselves, regardless of what they may claim, you have to keep searching. Yet when you study the current science with all its space missions and space records, even these remain inconclusive, as though space missions have never reached past the lower orbit of Earth themselves. Therefore, now we have additional important questions to ask, besides those regarding the true shape of Earth. Is there anything at all past the lower orbit of Earth? No, according to all space records, regardless of what science may claim. Because as long as you cannot go past the lower orbit of Earth as an individual or as an entire valid space mission to see everything yourself, and as long as the current science remains incapable to provide the necessary scientific evidence stating that the Earth is spherical and that our world spans past the lower orbit of Earth as we see in the sky, then everyone, the entire humanity remains incapable to prove that Earth is flat or spherical. Since just as all flatearthers and planoterrestrials out there struggle to prove that the Earth is flat, now you have the entire science, with its entire army of millions of employed scientists incapable to prove that Earth is spherical and that there is anything out there past the lower orbit of Earth. Because this unique circumstance questions not only the accurate shape of Earth, not only the pertinence and reliability of the current science, but it questions the meaning and nature of this entire world. And if you are only starting your search for truth right now, to see if Earth could be flat and not spherical, there is significantly more going on than contorted science and fake space missions, while you should research harder to find out truth. Because you cannot simply solve a mathematical equation here at the surface of Earth to find out its shape and nature, while you cannot rely on science to tell you the truth as it lies persistently, and now you have to figure out everything on your own. Yet there are still ways to tell if Earth is spherical of flat, by the laws of physics here at the surface of Earth matching space objects or flat surfaces, or matching rotating objects or stationary ones, as we will see shortly in the book. Yet you always have to be careful throughout your studies, because many times, created realities are made with the main intention to seem larger and therefore more credible, fooling you the entire time. While dreams and videogames do just the same. And therefore, now you have to consider these details just as well, along with much more. This book creates a comprehensive model of Earth and of the entire world, studying its shape, boundaries, characteristics, and social circumstances, using reasoning and accurate facts. This research of the true shape and nature of Earth is done from all perspectives: scientific, empiric, social, cognitive, existential, and spiritual.

The hope is that the ideas expounded in this Flat Earth Trilogy series will provide compelling justifications for the claim that no curvature can be found on the Earth, which points to the empirical conclusion that we live on a plane and not a spinning ball in science fiction outer space. The details regarding the possible topography of the Earth are discussed in depth in this book, but ultimately, the absolute true topography of the Earth is not known by anyone. -Gregory Lessing Garrett

Book excerpt: Would you like to learn the truth about Earth, about its shape, nature, meaning, and characteristics? Then get ready to embark in the study of one of the most restricted and controversial topics, the Flat Earth Theory. Yes, the Flat Earth is back, and it has always been around, since it has always been accepted among the upper social classes. It transpires today in the Media, Politics, Entertainment, and even in Science, it becomes more and more visible, and consequently, millions of people already research the Flat Earth Theory today. Yet this time is the other way around, with authorities ignoring the Flat Earth Theory, while enforcing only the Spherical Model of Earth, along with the Big Bang Theory, the Theory of Evolution, the Theory of Relativity, and so on. Is the Earth flat or spherical? You cannot know with certainty, just because concepts as 'theory' and 'model' signify probable truth only until proven false, and therefore it is not accurate. While Science is full of theories, models, interpretations, and speculations, but not of facts. Because as long as you have access only to debatable information, records, and theories about space beyond the lower orbit of Earth, then both the Spherical and Flat models of Earth remain simple theories too, not facts. Yet this book goes beyond researching the true shape and nature of Earth, since it manages to reveal the social actors behind the main theories defining Earth Science and Space Science today, including the strategies and intentions that these social actors have from you and from the entire world. What chance can the Flat Earth Theory have against the current official model? It depends who is behind Science and how they want the Earth to be, but most importantly, it depends on which side of the line you stand this time, because this time it is all different, since this time you seem to have a choice in these. If you want to learn the truth about Earth, this book is for you.

"Climate change is a hoax--and so is coronavirus." "Vaccines are bad for you." These days, many of our fellow citizens reject scientific expertise and prefer ideology to facts. They are not merely uninformed--they are misinformed. They cite cherry-picked evidence, rely on fake experts, and believe conspiracy theories. How can we convince such people otherwise? How can we get them to change their minds and accept the facts when they don't believe in facts? In this book, Lee McIntyre shows that anyone can fight back against science deniers, and argues that it's important to do so. Science denial can kill. Drawing on his own experience--including a visit to a Flat Earth convention--as well as academic research, McIntyre outlines the common themes of science denialism, present in misinformation campaigns ranging from tobacco companies' denial in the 1950s that smoking causes lung cancer to today's anti-vaxxers. He describes attempts to use his persuasive powers as a philosopher to convert Flat Earthers; surprising discussions with coal miners; and conversations with a scientist friend about genetically modified organisms in food. McIntyre offers tools and techniques for communicating the truth and values of science, emphasizing that the most important way to reach science deniers is to talk to them calmly and respectfully--to put ourselves out there, and meet them face to face.

First published in 1885... William Carpenter (February 25, 1830 - September 1, 1896) was an English printer and author, and a proponent of the flat Earth theory, active in England and the United States in the nineteenth century. Carpenter immigrated to the United States and continued his advocacy of the Flat Earth movement..... Carpenter was a passionate advocate of the flat earth theory, which holds that the earth is not a globe, but a flat square which revolves on a central axis with the sun stationary over the center..... Carpenter, a printer originally from Greenwich, England, published Theoretical Astronomy Examined and Exposed - Proving the Earth not a Globe in eight parts from 1864 under the name Common Sense. He later emigrated to Baltimore where he published A hundred proofs the Earth is not a Globe in 1885..... Carpenter argued that: "There are rivers that flow for hundreds of miles towards the level of the sea without falling more than a few feet - notably, the Nile, which, in a thousand miles, falls but a foot. A level expanse of this extent is quite incompatible with the idea of the Earth's convexity. It is, therefore, a reasonable proof that Earth is not a globe." "If the Earth were a globe, a small model globe would be the very best - because the truest - thing for the navigator to take to sea with him. But such a thing as that is not known: with such a toy as a guide, the mariner would wreck his ship, of a certainty!, This is a proof that Earth is not a globe." Carpenter was a proponent of English writer Samuel Rowbotham (1816-1885), who produced a pamphlet, with Carpenter's assistance, called Zetetic Astronomy in 1849 arguing for a flat Earth and published results of many experiments that tested the curvatures of water over a long drainage ditch, followed by another called The inconsistency of Modern Astronomy and its Opposition to the Scripture. Rowbotham also produced studies, mostly printed by Carpenter, that purported to show the effects of ships disappearing below the horizon could be explained by the laws of perspective in relation to the human eye.

Book excerpt: Samuel Birley Rowbotham advances the Flat Earth theory, which holds that Earth is not in fact an oblate spheroid planet, but an enclosed plane above which the astronomical bodies are situated. This premium edition contains all of Rowbotham's original graphs, charts and drawings. This book began as a pamphlet in the 1840s, explaining the theory with a few sketches alongside. Rowbotham was already an inventor and author, and over time theories of Zetetic Astronomy - in which the Earth is flat - became popular. In 1881 the author expanded and published this book, in part to meet public and scientific scrutiny. Experiments and demonstrations are conducted in support of the Earth being flat, with the astronomical bodies situated above, rather than around it. Most of these are framed with illustrations and diagrams, that the reader understands Rowbotham's notions. Various chapters concern motion of the heavenly bodies, sunrises, sunsets, the tidal movements, and distances of the Sun and Moon from Earth.
