Book excerpt: One hundred acres were laid out for Francis Ladson, the first Ladson in Carolina, under the terms of a purchase receipt from the Lords Proprietors dated 6 May 1696. No other or more formal grant than the receipt, and the warrant thereupon issued on the same day, appears to have been made, but Francis Ladson evidently took possession and by his will in 1717 left the 100 acres to his 6 children: Francis, Mary (who married Daniel Johnston), Sarah (who married Nathaniel Nichols), Robert, Jacob, and Elizabeth (who married Benjamin Perry). All of the last 5 of these on 27 August 1729 and 28 December 1731 conveyed their interests in the 100 acres to oldest son, Francis, Jr. To this 100 acres, Francis, Jr. added 60 acres of marsh on the river granted to him 21 May 1734, and the 160 acres seems to have passed from Francis, Jr. to his son, Isaac Ladson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Belvidere is underwater too deep for any eye but that of memory to reach," begins Anne Sinkler Fishburne reverential recollections of her ancestral home. Located in between Santee River and Eutaw Creek near present day Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, Belvidere plantation once produced Santee long cotton (a hybrid between Upland cotton and Sea Island cotton) and short staple cotton on its nearly 800 acres of rich Lowcountry soil and served as the home of the Sinkler family from the 1770s until the 1940s. An elegant two-story timber house was built on the property in 1803, complete with full-brick basement, brick foundation, a welcoming piazza across the front, and a large wing balanced on the opposite side with a brick-paved sun piazza. In 1936, a race track was constructed at Belvidere to host races for the St. John's Jockey Club (originally the Santee Jockey Club). The storied and vibrant life at Belvidere came to a close in 1941, however, with the completion of the huge Santee Cooper hydroelectric development. Belvidere, like many plantations of the parish, now rests below the waters of Lake Marion, but its past can still be experienced by the modern reader in this plantation memory. First published in 1949, Belvidere chronicles life at the plantation through letters, memoir, and historical research. When Fishburne gathered the materials that compose this volume, she merely wished to preserve for her grandchildren the story of the plantation that was her beloved home and that of many generations of her forebears. Written in an invitingly authentic Lowcountry voice, the resulting narrative is an opportunity to sit on the piazza and walk the gardens once more and share stories of a way of life from a bygone era. Featuring twenty-four illustrations, this commemorative edition of Belvidere is enhanced with a new introduction by Fishburne's granddaughter Anne Sinkler Whaley LeClercq, an accomplished family historian, author, and editor.

Book excerpt: By 1856, the Dunavants had begun building railroads and they would eventually be among the South's prominent railroad contractors. As they migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and Tennessee, they added to those regions new railroads, mills, hotels, golf clubs, dams and tunnels. For 73 years, from 1856 to 1929, their large-scale construction projects contributed substantially to the development of Southside Virginia, Western North Carolina (Morganton, Charlotte, Statesville, Asheville and Blowing Rock), Tennessee (Memphis), and other southern states. The naming of Dunavant Street in Charlotte paid homage to former resident and builder, Henry Jackson Dunavant. In downtown Morganton, Samuel David Dunavant organized Burke County’s first mill (the Dunavant Cotton Mnfg. Co., later known as the Alpine Cotton Mill); its building has been added to the National Historic Register. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From exploitation to preservation, the complex history of one of the Southeast's most important natural areas and South Carolina's only national park Located at the confluence of the Congaree and Wateree Rivers in central South Carolina, Congaree National Park protects the nation's largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest. Modern visitors to the park enjoy a pristine landscape that seems ancient and untouched by human hands, but in truth its history is far different. In Nature's Return, Mark Kinzer examines the successive waves of inhabitants, visitors, and landowners of this region by synthesizing information from property and census records, studies of forest succession, tree-ring analyses, slave narratives, and historical news accounts. Established in 1976, Congaree National Park contains within its boundaries nearly twenty-seven thousand acres of protected uplands, floodplains, and swamps. Once exploited by humans for farming, cattle grazing, plantation agriculture, and logging, the park area is now used gently for recreation and conservation. Although the impact of farming, grazing, and logging in the park was far less extensive than in other river swamps across the Southeast, it is still evident to those who know where to look. Cultivated in corn and cotton during the nineteenth century, the land became the site of extensive logging operations soon after the Civil War, a practice that continued intermittently into the late twentieth century. From burning canebrakes to clearing fields and logging trees, inhabitants of the lower Congaree valley have modified the floodplain environment both to ensure their survival and, over time, to generate wealth. In this they behaved no differently than people living along other major rivers in the South Atlantic Coastal Plain. Today Congaree National Park is a forest of vast flats and winding sloughs where champion trees dot the landscape. Indeed its history of human use and conservation make it a valuable laboratory for the study not only of flora and fauna but also of anthropology and modern history. As the impact of human disturbance fades, the Congaree's stature as one of the most important natural areas in the eastern United States only continues to grow.
