Book excerpt: In a man's life he will take a fall, but how low he goes.....that just depends. -Rancid. For me, those falls had been often and severe. There were many lows, and in those lows I had come to realize that someone very special was right there beside me. Someone who was ready to help if I'd only asked. This story or testimony is the journey of a punk rocker coming to realize who that someone was as I make my way through life. I want to engage my brothers and sisters in punk in a new way. You might feel that reading sucks, I generally do. However, I encourage you to take a couple hours out of the busy life you live and be The First Ones into the punk rock testimony. For 16 years I played drums and vocals for Chainsaw Johnny, the best worst punk band ever. Our three piece combination of bass, drums, and power chord guitar pushed hardcore punk to the extreme. After the death of our bassist Dean, the spirit of Chainsaw Johnny died too. To me, punk rock was full steam ahead and a screeching halt. After a time of re-direction, I have come to realize that we're in a spiritual battle. I know that religion often leaves a bad taste in people's mouths, but I want to share with the world of punk rock, a testimony of what happens when you take a fresh look at a man called Jesus. A look at life, through the eyes of a punk rocker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many extraordinary female scientists, doctors, and engineers tasted independence and responsibility for the first time during the First World War. How did this happen? Patricia Fara reveals how suffragists, such as Virginia Woolf's sister, Ray Strachey, had already aligned themselves with scientific and technological progress, and that during the dark years of war they mobilized women to enter conventionally male domains such as science and medicine. Fara tells the stories of women such as: mental health pioneer Isabel Emslie, chemist Martha Whiteley, a co-inventor of tear gas, and botanist Helen Gwynne Vaughan. Women were now carrying out vital research in many aspects of science, but could it last? Though suffragist Millicent Fawcett declared triumphantly that 'the war revolutionised the industrial position of women. It found them serfs, and left them free', the outcome was very different. Although women had helped the country to victory and won the vote for those over thirty, they had lost the battle for equality. Men returning from the Front reclaimed their jobs, and conventional hierarchies were re-established even though the nation now knew that women were fully capable of performing work traditionally reserved for men. Fara examines how the bravery of these pioneer women scientists, temporarily allowed into a closed world before the door clanged shut again, paved the way for today's women scientists. Yet, inherited prejudices continue to limit women's scientific opportunities.

Did the American Indians descend from the inhabitants of an alien spacecraft that crashed in the Alaska-Canada region thousands of years ago? Starcrash indicates that aliens continued to come to Earth, some intentionally and by accident, throughout our history. In order to adjust to harsh conditions they were forced to interbreed with the local aborigines. This was the only way to insure the survival of their race. Does their blood still flow in the veins of certain American Indian tribes?

Book excerpt: While the scholarly study of culture as a politically contested sphere in Palestine/Israel has become an established field over the past two decades, this volume highlights some particular understudied aspects of it: the relations between Arab identity, Mizrahi identity, and Israeli nationalism; the nightclub scene as a field of encounter, appropriation, and exclusion; an analysis of the institutional and political conditions of Palestinian cinema; the implications of the intersectional relationship between gender, ethnicity and national identity in the field of popular culture, and the concrete relations between particular aesthetic forms and symbolic power. The authors come from diverse disciplines, including anthropology, architecture, ethnomusicology, history, sociology, and political science. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

From 'A History of the Mishnaic Law of Appointed Times, Part 1' This volume introduces the sources of Judaism in late antiquity to scholars in adjacent fields, such as the study of the Old and New Testaments, Ancient History, the ancient Near East, and the history of religion. In two volumes, leading American, Israeli, and European specialists in the history, literature, theology, and archaeology of Judaism offer factual answers to the two questions that the study of any religion in ancient times must raise. The first is, what are the sources -- written and in material culture -- that inform us about that religion? The second is, how have we to understand those sources in reconstructing the history of various Judaic systems in antiquity. The chapters set forth in simple statements, intelligible to non-specialists, the facts which the sources provide. Because of the nature of the subject and acute interest in it, the specialists also raise some questions particular to the study of Judaism, dealing with its historical relationship with nascent Christianity in New Testament times. The work forms the starting point for the study of all the principal questions concerning Judaism in late antiquity and sets forth the most current, critical results of scholarship.

Book excerpt: At the time of his death, Stanislavsky considered Nikolai Demidov to be ‘his only student, who understands the System’. Demidov’s incredibly forward-thinking processes not only continued his teacher’s pioneering work, but also solved the problems of an actor’s creativity that Stanislavsky never conquered. This book brings together Demidov’s five volumes on actor training. Supplementary materials, including transcriptions of Demidov’s classes, and notes and correspondence from the author make this the definitive collection on one of Russian theatre’s most important figures.

This thoroughly enlightening work endeavors to guide the reader on a journey through a long lost and well-hidden ancient Hebrew biblical understanding of ""The Everlasting Agreement"". The loss of this moral imperative has long plagued honestly spiritual people of all nations, and is more important and imperative today than at any other time in man's history prior to the flood of Noah. Take this journey back in time with Dr. Asher, following the ancestors to an understanding that may quickly change your life and the lives of those around you for countless generations. Within these pages, lies the proverbial infinite pond ripple. The Land of MEAT & Honey is a provocatively critical work delving into Gods singular most preeminent truth for humanity; and stands as a completely original work in our modern times. C. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The brilliant coming-of-age-and-into-superstardom story of one of the greatest artists of all time, in his own words—featuring never-before-seen photos, original scrapbooks and lyric sheets, and the exquisite memoir he began writing before his tragic death NAMED ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND THE GUARDIAN • NOMINATED FOR THE NAACP IMAGE AWARD Prince was a musical genius, one of the most beloved, accomplished, and acclaimed musicians of our time. He was a startlingly original visionary with an imagination deep enough to whip up whole worlds, from the sexy, gritty funk paradise of “Uptown” to the mythical landscape of Purple Rain to the psychedelia of “Paisley Park.” But his most ambitious creative act was turning Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minnesota, into Prince, one of the greatest pop stars of any era. The Beautiful Ones is the story of how Prince became Prince—a first-person account of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and fame that would come to define him. The book is told in four parts. The first is the memoir Prince was writing before his tragic death, pages that bring us into his childhood world through his own lyrical prose. The second part takes us through Prince’s early years as a musician, before his first album was released, via an evocative scrapbook of writing and photos. The third section shows us Prince’s evolution through candid images that go up to the cusp of his greatest achievement, which we see in the book’s fourth section: his original handwritten treatment for Purple Rain—the final stage in Prince’s self-creation, where he retells the autobiography of the first three parts as a heroic journey. The book is framed by editor Dan Piepenbring’s riveting and moving introduction about his profound collaboration with Prince in his final months—a time when Prince was thinking deeply about how to reveal more of himself and his ideas to the world, while retaining the mystery and mystique he’d so carefully cultivated—and annotations that provide context to the book’s images. This work is not just a tribute to an icon, but an original and energizing literary work in its own right, full of Prince’s ideas and vision, his voice and image—his undying gift to the world.

Then an anomalous quirk occurred in the maturation process and sentient artificials were born. Now free from the supercomputer that governed their every thought, they followed their natural inclination and came to Earth to be a part of humanities utopian society. Detective Dexter Ruyac, like everyone else on Earth, envisioned the artificals as advertised by the government to be drones – biological machines; so far removed from mankind they did not even have souls. He was startled to discover that the anomaly of a sentient artificial he had found was just one of many. One presidential official of the global government the World Court deemed them as an industrial accident and a threat to the social order of Earth; knowledge of these intelligent artificials should not reach the public. This officer of the Court formed a black operation group of cybernetic hunter killers to eliminate them. Dexter’s social pledge as a policeman to protect and serve has extended to these immigrants of mankind from across the stars but he is running out of time to find them first.
