Book excerpt: People interested in coin collecting, medal collecting, and American Revolutionary history will enjoy this read. The American Continental Congress issued eleven medals for valor during the American Revolution. This book tells the stories behind these brave men and their exploits, and the long process of procuring their individual medals. America had no generic medal for valor at the time. They also had no mint, so had to have France and their sculptors create each medal. This was a labor of love for Franklin and Jefferson while they were Ambassadors to France. Thomas Jefferson himself collected the medals, and presented a set of them to George Washington. Collectors of these medals often include in the series other medals sculpted by the same engravers and struck in Paris relating to the American Revolution. People call the collecting area Comitia Americana (Latin for American Congress). Twenty-six medals are pictured in full page color photographs. The book includes full information about types of medals available and their cost. Foreword by Niel Musante. Topics covered are: Chapter 1. Introduction and Franklin Chapter 2. Medals procured by Franklin: De Fleury 1779 and Libertas Americana 1783 Chapter 3. Dupré's Franklin Medals 1784 & 1786 Chapter 4. Medals procured by Humphreys 1787: Gates and Greene Chapter 5. Jefferson 1789: Washington before Boston Medal Chapter 6. Jefferson 1789: two remaining Stony Point Medals, Wayne & Stewart Medals Chapter 7. Jefferson 1789: 3 Cowpens medals; Morgan, William Washington & Howard Medals Chapter 8. William Short 1789: Jones Medal Chapter 9. Jefferson and Short: Diplomatic Medal Chapter 10. Lee Paulus Hook Medal Chapter 11. Related medals: Treaty of Paris Medal, Lafayette Vengeur Medal Table of types of Comitia Americana Medals and prices, Timeline, Lists, Index

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Medal of Honor may be America’s highest military decoration, but all Medals of Honor are not created equal. The medal has in fact consisted of several distinct decorations at various times and has involved a number of competing statutes and policies that rewarded different types of heroism. In this book, the first comprehensive look at the medal’s historical, legal, and policy underpinnings, Dwight S. Mears charts the complex evolution of these developments and differences over time. The Medal of Honor has had different qualification thresholds at different times, and indeed three separate versions—one for the army and two for the navy—existed contemporaneously between World Wars I and II. Mears traces these versions back to the medal’s inception during the Civil War and continues through the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—along the way describing representative medal actions for all major conflicts and services as well as legislative and policy changes contemporary to each period. He gives particular attention to retroactive army awards for the Civil War; World War I legislation that modernized and expanded the army’s statutory award authorization; the navy’s grappling with both a combat and noncombat Medal of Honor through much of the twentieth century; the Vietnam-era act that ended noncombat awards and largely standardized the Medal of Honor among all services; and the perceived decline of Medals of Honor awarded in the ongoing Global War on Terror. Mears also explores the tradition of awards via legislative bills of relief; extralegislative awards; administrative routes to awards through Boards of Correction of Military Records; restoration of awards previously revoked by the army in 1917; judicial review of military actions in federal court; and legislative actions intended to atone for historical discrimination against ethnic minorities. Unprecedented in scope and depth, his work is sure to be the definitive resource on America’s highest military honor.

Book excerpt: "During the past 150 years, the American Numismatic Society has been a leader in the publication of art medals in the United States. Generally employing the finest medalists available, the Society has set an example few can match. In addition, with the exception of the United States Mint, no U.S. entity can boast so long and distinguished a contribution in this area. Founded in 1858, the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society, as it was known from 1864-1907, believed the issuance of medals to be a part of its mission from the earliest years of its existence. Author Scott H. Miller includes 60 medals issued by the ANS between 1865 and 2014 along with two COAC medals and the 1910 Actors' Fund Medal, all accompanied by color photographs. Many entries are supplemented by artist's sketches and archival photographs as well as the stories behind each issue. Four Appendixes include recipients of some of these medals as well as the list of dies, hubs, galvanos, and casts of ANS medals in the ANS's own collection."

Book excerpt: America's First Veterans traces the experiences of Revolutionary War veterans from the dissolution of the Continental Army in 1783 through the deaths of the last Revolutionary War veterans in the 1860s. It considers the changing place of Revolutionary War veterans in the life of the early republic and describes the development of pensions and other benefits for Revolutionary War veterans, their widows and heirs. It includes chapters on the inducements offered to recruit soldiers, the organization of the Society of the Cincinnati (the first veterans' organization in U.S. history), the difficulties faced by veterans in the early years of the republic, the distribution of land warrants and land grants to veterans, early veterans' narratives, the commemoration of the Revolution in the 1820s, and the pension acts of 1818 and 1832, as well as other legislation benefiting Revolutionary War veterans. It concludes with chapters on women veterans and widows of Revolutionary War soldiers and on the last Revolutionary War veterans, including those who lived long enough to be photographed in old age. These themes are illustrated by eighty-five manuscripts, books, prints, broadsides, portraits, and other artifacts from the collections of the Society of the Cincinnati and its constituent societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medals and Ribbons of U.S. Navy is the first complete illustrated history of the medals and ribbons of the Navy from the Revolution up to today. Every type and variation of Navy military medals and ribbons along with their appropriate devices is shown and described in color. The photography and illustrations are exceptional. There are also chapters on how to determine a veteran's military medals and ribbons. Perhaps most unique is a series of U.S. Navy veterans' military awards displays covering World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Liberation of Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Global War on Terror. The detail sections show how veterans, retirees and families can claim their medals. A comprehensive guide lays out how to wear medals and insignia for active duty, National Guard and reserve service members as well as the correct protocol for the wear of medals and insignias on the uniform by veterans and retirees. The correct order of wear for all U.S. Navy medals and ribbons is laid out in precise and beautiful detail to include additional information on how multiservice ribbons are worn by veterans. Perhaps one of the nicest additions to this book is coverage of foreign decorations, foreign campaign medals, United Nations and NATO medals authorized Naval personnel. It is a single source full-color illustrated guide for all U.S. Navy medals and ribbons over the past almost 200 years. The United States Armed Forces have produced over 100 new military awards in 70 plus years since the unification of the Armed Forces in 1947, or an average of over one new award per year. While the establishment of so many awards is a clear indication of the many missions and roles thrust upon the Armed Forces since the United States assumed its mantle of world leadership it also reflects the importance of medals and ribbons to an all volunteer Naval force. Medals and Ribbons of U.S. Navy is designed to be a definitive illustrated reference and guide covering United States Navy decorations, medals and ribbons for veterans, their families, active duty and reserve personnel. It is also meant as a single source for the military decorations and medals of every Navy veteran.
